"Plunging government revenues may have the unintended consequence ... of reminding people that we are ultimately responsible for our own safety."

"The pie plate is empty and inevitable cutbacks in important public services, including law enforcement, are on the horizon. It is already happening in Oakland, Calif., where the police chief has announced that officers will no longer respond to a broad list of crimes if department layoffs go as planned."

"What's a citizen to do? Perhaps they will follow the advice of Ashtabula County, Ohio, Judge Alfred Mackey and Hudspeth County, Texas, Sheriff Arvin West. In the past few months, both have advised their neighbors to arm themselves." ...

"The motto of Iowa is 'Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain.' Never truer words have been spoken. Imagine if it was one our other rights protected by the Constitution that was under attack. For example, our Freedom of Speech being considered for regulation or elimination by a UN committee of foreign diplomats, with the United States supporting the action. It would take no time at all for citizens and politicians alike to decry the chilling effects that a treaty curtailing free speech would have on a basic concept of what makes our country unique. ..." ...

"The suit, reportedly filed in US District Court on July 20th, alleges that The Armed Citizen and its owners 'willfully copied' and infringed on original source content from the Las Vegas Review-Journal."

"According to news reports, Righthaven LLC has filed lawsuits against no less than 80 other political websites and individual blogs for 'infringement.'"

Next big 'gun rights' battle may be over knives

"The next major battle in the right to keep and bear arms may have nothing at all to do with firearms, but with knives, and this fight will cut straight to the bone, both culturally and financially here in the Pacific Northwest."

"That is the prospect emerging from a controversy now exploding in New York City, where Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. has declared war on pocket knives. We are not talking about switchblades or butterfly knives ... but the kind of one-hand-opening pocket knives that have become popular with the majority of shooters, hunters, and other outdoorsmen and women. According to Doug Ritter, executive director of KnifeRights.org, about 80 percent of knife sales today involve this kind of knife." ...

Safer Streets 2010: Editors DO get the Second Amendment

"Yes, editors are getting it. Even the Los Angeles Times seems to understand the purpose of the second amendment when it writes that its health is the same as the health of the first amendment. Since 2003, I have said that the health of the second amendment is the primary indicator of the overall health of the nation. The Times wrote that it did not want selective enforcement from non-incorporation, because people could then come after the fourth estate on those same grounds. Thinking in terms of survival, The Times might as well have said that they see the second amendment in action as clearly as gun owners do. Breakthrough. To any publisher, censorship is the equivalent of gun control. ..." ...

"More women than men took up hunting last year, according to new net figures from the National Sporting Goods Association."

"While total hunters in the U.S. decreased slightly (.05 percent) between 2008 and 2009, the number of female hunters increased by 5.4 percent, netting 163,000 new participants. Growth areas for women included muzzleloading (up 134.6 percent), bowhunting (up 30.7 percent) and hunting with firearms (up 3.5 percent)."

"Data also show women outpaced men among net newcomers to target shooting with a rifle, where female participation grew by 4.1 percent." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A U.S. senator from Alabama is speaking out against the nomination of U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a statement issued Thursday, Republican Sen. Richard Shelby says Kagan offered "little information" during her confirmation and that what she did say didn't sway him to support her.

He points to her comments surrounding her decision as a Harvard Law School official to bar military recruiters from the property and says he worries she has expressed hostility to the Second Amendment. He says he doesn't believe Kagan can uphold the right to bear arms.

Shelby says Kagan hasn't clarified where her politics end and her judicial philosophy begins.

"Elena Kagan might win confirmation to the Supreme Court, but Sen. John Ensign said Thursday she will not have his vote."

"Ensign announced he will oppose Senate confirmation of Kagan, the solicitor general and President Barack Obama's choice for the highest court."

"The decision by the conservative Nevada Republican came as little surprise. All but one Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted against Kagan when she was recommended for confirmation on Tuesday."

"Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has said he will schedule a final vote on Kagan before senators leave for August recess. Most if not all Democrats are expected to vote for her with a small number of Republicans." ...

"Upon President Obama’s nomination of Ms. Kagan, I stated that I would base my decision on what I could ascertain about her judicial philosophy from other components of her record, in light of her lack of judicial experience,' said Shelby. 'What little information she offered during her confirmation hearings did not accrue to her credit, in my judgment.'" ...

"My personal view is that in any coming maelstrom, most individual level 'misbehavior' will very likely manifest itself in the form of small encounters, systems disruption, and 'Clinton Rules' engagements. While small unit action is possible and may happen in some instances, I think that ... the rule will be the small, individual action. This is the territory of the guerrilla – individual, self supporting, and operating in their home AO."

"For much of this type of activity, a reasonably accurate, potent, robust, and above all portable rifle is the most desired and efficient tool possible (especially for many of the 'semi hard' targets that systems disruption activity must deal with)."

... "These days across the nation and across this very state ... we have politicians who pontificate about the need to tighten our belts ... the social safety net be damned."

"Of course let's be honest. That net was always frayed to begin with; nowadays it's been ripped open along the seam. Nowadays, thanks to the rabid lobbying of our friends at the NRA, and informed by a warped view of the Second Amendment, we have a Supreme Court that seems hellbent on wiping from the books every gun law, however sensible, that exists." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Well the only two gun laws the SCOTUS has ruled on in the last 75 years or so were complete handgun bans. So the next time an anti talks about "sensible gun laws" remember, to the antis complete bans qualify as 'sensible'.

"Bill O'Reilly's condescending column on July 3, 'Gun ownership clear except to liberals,' indicates how easy it is for him to confuse issues." ...

"O'Reilly obscures the real issue about handguns — that far more murders are committed by guns in the United States than in Canada and European countries where gun control is very strictly enforced. To use Hurricane Katrina and King George of England as his best arguments for the preservation of the Second Amendment shows that gun control issues are clear except to O'Reilly and the NRA."
-------

Submitter's Note: The writer ignores the fact that Canada and Europe have significantly fewer murders committed by knives, fists, rocks, etc.. Murder is a societal issue, not a gun issue.

"In his diatribe against gun-control advocates, a recent letter writer calls upon an armed militia of law-abiding patriots to defend this country against those who would invade and attack us and want to see this country go under."

"The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, fully supports the Firearms Microstamping Evaluation and Study Act (H.R. 5667), which calls for federal study of the ill-conceived and flawed concept of firearms microstamping. NSSF is supporting this legislation because we have grave and serious concerns about this concept. We believe that a comprehensive study will add to the scientific body of evidence now available demonstrating that microstamping is an easily defeated, fundamentally flawed concept that holds the potential for pricing firearms out of the reach of the average American. ..." ...

"According to unnamed sources, the Arkansas State Police is opposed to legislation repealing an open carry ban in this state. The extent of their opposition is currently unknown, but if we base our expectations on what we saw in Oklahoma during their most recent legislative session, we can assume the ASP will be a principal opponent to Arkansans having their rights returned to them."

"However, it is possible the Arkansas State Police will be violating federal law if they attempt to influence future gun legislation. If the Second Amendment actually does apply to the states ... as the Supreme Court ruled it did in June, then any police organization actively campaigning against firearms legislation would be breaking U.S. law. ..." ...

"SACRAMENTO BEE writer Dan Morain (July 10) uses provocative and inflammatory language in his anti-Second Amendment rant. He goes back in time more than 20 years to dig up four incidents — admittedly disturbing — of gun violence. But in a population of nearly 40 million people ... one would logically expect any statistical measure to exceed those of states with fewer people."

"Morain makes the questionable claim, unsupported by any data, that 'no state has shed more blood because of gun violence than California.' He then launches into more unsupported claims, glorifying the actions of California anti-gun lawmakers, some of whom have built their entire careers on restricting the access of state residents to firearms." ...
