"Writing for the Los Angeles Times, author Sonia Wolff described her experience of she and her husband becoming gun owners. In my doorstep edition this morning it is Reluctantly packing heat. In the online edition, it is The reluctant gun owner. It's a wonderful piece... The essay, not the revolver they looked at."

"One of the most important observations Sonia makes it this: 'We should have a pistol,' I finally declared. 'Something I can use.' Still, I wrestled with the idea of whether I could become someone else, someone capable of violence. Was I really prepared to kill someone who threatened my property or my life?"

"If I may, the truth is that you do not become someone else, you grow up. ..." ...

"Okonkwo said the issue was not about whether the parents owned a gun."

"He said the doctor and patient have to develop a relationship of trust and that if parents won't answer such basic safety questions, they cannot trust each other about more important health issues."

"He said he respected a patient’s right not to answer questions, but it was also his right to no longer treat them, and he isn't required by law to do so." ...

"Once I became a gun owner and received the training I needed to carry and use it responsibly, mine eyes were opened to the bi-polar attitude Hollywood has regarding guns. How Many Bullets Do You Need in Your Home Defense Handgun?

"A handgun is not a shotgun. A handgun doesn't fire as much lead as a shotgun. A handgun is harder to aim than a shotgun. Provided the shotgun in question is loaded with double ought buck and fired from a relatively close distance, the disparity in lethality is so great that many security experts pose the following question: what's the main purpose of a home defense handgun? To fight your way to your shotgun. This much is true: if you're trying to stop someone from killing yourself or your loved ones using a handgun, you’re going to need to pull the trigger more than once. So you’ll need more than one bullet. But how many?" ...

It doesn't matter if you suck up to her like a remora fish on a shark. There's no coming back. I take the same approach to guns. If a firearm fails, I will never trust the gun again. It's dead to me. The madness is driven by the 'more guns=less crime' malarkey that has become the mantra of the gun lobby." ...

"Apart from the statistics, the deterrence theory poses an interesting conundrum. "Fair enough. Let's consult the Constitution. ... Pro-gun activists rarely cite the preamble to the portion that establishes a 'right to bear arms,' because it creates ambiguity. A well-reasoned and respected lineage of American legal scholarship argues that the Second Amendment does not provide an individual right to bear arms, but rather a state's right to establish a formal militia. So there is certainly room for debate. ..." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Okay, you've read the Constitution, now read Justice John Paul Stevens' dissent (in which he was joined by the rest of the minority Justices). Pay special attention to the first paragraph: "The question presented by this case is not whether the Second Amendment protects a 'collective right' or an 'individual right.' Surely it protects a right that can be enforced by individuals. But a conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right does not tell us anything about the scope of that right." So the Supreme Court of the United States of America disagrees with you, 9-0 that "there is certainly room for debate" about the meaning of the amendment.
