When it comes to defensive pistol training, we want to include things like stress, decision making, problem solving, along with the technical aspects of using a gun in self-defense. The issue isn't with the principle, it's with not knowing when the danger of specific training isn't worth the benefit of “making it realistic.”
If you're looking for training, find a trainer that uses real-world principles in their training. But beware of trainers that take it to dangerous places. |

The House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on H.R. 1808, which would ban the production and sale of "assault weapons." That category includes semi-automatic rifles with features such as pistol grips, folding or adjustable stocks, barrel shrouds, and threaded barrels. The bill also would ban a long list of models by name. Setting the stage for the vote on H.R. 1808, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform today grilled manufacturers of the targeted rifles, emphasizing that they make money by selling the guns that Democrats want to ban, a fact the bill's supporters view as self-evidently scandalous. |

A South Florida man who was shot last month by his stepson was arrested Tuesday after being released from a hospital in Miami, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Adam Linhardt, a spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, William Zimmerman, 53, of Big Pine Key, was shot by his 25-year-old stepson on June 26 as the stepson witnessed Zimmerman beating his mother.
The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 7:30 p.m. that night from the victim’s son. Linhardt said the son shot Zimmerman while he was on the phone with the dispatcher. |

New York City defense attorneys invoke Bruen to challenge illegal gun possession cases. Last month, the Supreme Court endorsed a constitutional right to carry a gun in self-defense outside the home in invalidating a provision of New York law that required gun owners to show “proper cause” to carry a concealed gun. Since then, The City reports that public defenders in at least seven cases have asked judges to dismiss illegal gun possession charges against their clients, arguing that the ruling made no distinction between the specific gun permitting rules that were invalidated and broader laws against carrying guns without a permit. Judges have rejected the argument in four cases, while three are still pending. |

A Philadelphia teenager at the time of the incident has been found not guilty of first degree murder in the July 2020 shooting death of another teenager.
Austin Jarriel, 19 at the time of the incident, was on trial for the shooting death of 18-year-old Brandon “Brody” Talbert in an incident that occurred inside a Philadelphia home on July 30, 2020.
“This happened in a house,” District Attorney Steven Kilgore said. “There was no doubt who the shooter was. The question was, was he acting in self defense.
“There was evidence both ways. That’s why we have juries. The evidence was presented and apparently they thought there was a reasonable doubt.” |

The Routt County Board of Commissioners will not pursue additional gun regulations locally, the board said in a statement on Wednesday, July 27.
The statement comes as some local residents have pressured commissioners to draft county gun regulations with authority given to local governments by a 2021 bill passed by the Colorado Legislature.
But the commissioners statement says a recent Supreme Court opinion “likely curtails the viability of any meaningful regulations,” and anything they could do would only have effect in county facilities and unincorporated areas beyond the jurisdiction of municipalities. |

The U.S. Constitution grants all citizens the legal right to possess guns.
“There is a 2nd Amendment right, since 2008, for us to bear arms in self-defense,” informed sister Julia Jenkins from the Bronx’s Legal Aid Society, who wrote the amicus brief which overturned New York’s gun law. |

Congress is desperately trying to resurrect a carcass of the 1990s. Democrats want to bring back their so-called assault weapons ban but pack it with more added restrictions this go-around. In fact, U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, R-9th District, had a revealing exchange with New York Congressman Jerry Nadler, where the latter admitted that the point of the bill is to ban a host of weapons in everyday use today.
The bill, expected to receive a floor vote in August, is about disarming Americans, classifying them more as serfs and not citizens. Regardless of some good intentions for public safety, it’s yet another piece of gun legislation that gives criminals and the government the upper hand over law-abiding citizens. |

After the tragedy at Robb Elementary that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers. A community across Texas has grown to create change. The first step for many, is stronger gun reform.
The City Council, School Board and the County Commissioners have all passed resolutions asking the Governor to call on a special session to increase the age for purchasing assault rifles.
One Facebook group, "Uvalde Strong for Gun Safety" is working to make that change as quickly as possible, they have also been planning a protest at an upcoming fundraiser that features a gun raffle and the chance to win an AR-15. |

he CEOs of major gun manufacturing companies told a U.S. House panel on Wednesday that their production of AR-15-style guns did not contribute to recent mass shootings that left 29 people dead, and that the killings were due to the actions of individual shooters.
Ahead of the hearing, the House Oversight & Reform Committee released a report showing that five major gun manufacturers made $1 billion in sales from semiautomatic weapon sales over the last decade and sales “skyrocketed” in 2021. A Georgia company, Daniel Defense, saw its revenue from AR-15-style rifles triple from $40 million in 2019 to $120 million in 2021, the report found. |

Five House Republicans have withdrawn as co-sponsors of a bill that aims to repeal an excise tax on firearms and ammunition which for decades has served as a financial pillar of the American model of wildlife conservation.
“Sometimes you look at a bill and, you know, it’s explained to be a positive and you look at it a little bit further and you change your mind,” Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) told HuffPost about his decision to un-sponsor the legislation.
The legislation, dubbed the RETURN Act (Repealing Excise Tax on Unalienable Rights Now) was introduced last month by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) and dozens of other House Republicans. |

Prosecutors agreed to dismiss a first degree reckless murder charge against Selwyn Smith. In return, he pleaded no contest to being a felon in possession of a firearm, and bail jumping and two methamphetamine charges in a separate case.
In a letter to the judge, DA Peter Rindal said based on what happened, he believes the castle doctrine applies. The castle doctrine says a person is allowed to use lethal force against another person if they believe it is necessary to prevent death or great harm to themselves. |

And so Waldman understood when she grew uncomfortable years later when he spoke about guns as a means of self-defense, an interest which led him in recent weeks to a public stand against gun laws approved by the Democratic-led state Legislature.
Waldman, the head of the New York State Jewish Gun Club, has been handing out posters to businesses in the lower Hudson Valley, which alert customers that it’s OK to bring a concealed weapon into the store.
They read: “Concealed Carry is Welcome Here. Thank you for keeping our children safe. May Hashem continue to watch over us.” |

In the past, I've touched on firearm related developments that were shaped just as much by regulations and politics as innovation and customer demand. The case in point today is Winchester's .350 Legend rifle cartridge.
Since the mid-2010s, several states with deer hunting seasons, including Indiana, Iowa, Ohio and Michigan, now allow straight-wall cartridges to be used in zones previously reserved for muzzleloader or shotgun only hunts. Big-bore 'thumpers' like the .450 Bushmaster, designed for semi-automatic rifles, and the venerable .45-70 Gov't. rimmed rifle round were quickly pressed into service. |

No sooner had the Supreme Court released its decision last month recognizing the personal right to carry a handgun outside the home than the big-government politicians began to resist the court's holding. None was more anti-Constitution than New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who told the court that "New York is ready for you."
I understand that politicians often say and do things that they inwardly know are unconstitutional or unlawful in order to please their political bases, but vaguely threatening the Supreme Court over a fundamental liberty is an offense to the Constitution. |

You’ve probably also seen some viral posts floating around about the so-called “Dicken Drill,” giving folks an opportunity to recreate what is currently understood as the events of that day.
Initially, I was planning on holding off on shooting the drill myself, waiting for more data to come forth about the Greenwood Mall shooting. However, I recently had the chance to shoot the drill, and have some opinions of my own to counter some of the discussions floating around online. With that being said, let’s check out the Dicken Drill. |

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt today joined a 17-state coalition, submitting a complaint against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Acting Director of ATF. The coalition joined Morehouse Enterprises, Gun Owners of America, and Gun Owners Foundation in suing over the ATF’s unconstitutional rulemaking that would regulate firearm parts manufacturers.
“The Biden Administration and the ATF are attempting to regulate unfinished, non-functional firearms parts as if they were complete, assembled firearms. Further, the ATF is taking steps to create a national firearms registry with their proposed rulemaking – not on my watch,” said Attorney General Schmitt. |

In dozens of motions filed in courthouses across New York City, public defenders are arguing that a Supreme Court ruling last month that vastly expanded gun rights has left the government without a case against their clients.
The court struck down a New York law on the public carrying of handguns, and Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his decision that the Second Amendment guarantees a general right to publicly carry handguns. That, the defenders have argued, renders New York laws that criminalize firearm possession — and the resulting charges against their clients — unconstitutional. |

The Tuesday night vote by the Burbank City Council followed a series of protests by residents who argued that the city has one of the highest concentrations of gun stores in the nation, with a total of 14.
