Gun Control Helps Terrorists

"We know that terrorists target civilians as well as military personnel. They capitalize on both mass murder, such as the attacks on 9/11, and on individual torture such as the numerous beheadings that continue to occur in the Middle East. By brutally torturing and murdering civilians, the terrorists hope to create a pacifist movement for military retreat as was the case in Italy's recent election and recent South Korean demonstrations for retreat."

"Gun-banning politicians and organizations seem all too willing to help facilitate such a retreat by continuing to push for further restrictions on civilian firearm ownership. They have the nerve to claim that additional restrictions, which really only affect law-abiding citizens, are necessary to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists. Such an argument is disingenuous at best."

"John Edwards' four years in the Senate are characterized primarily by poor attendance, but the votes he has cast are far closer to the Massachusetts liberal benchmark set by John Kerry than to views held by North Carolina voters." ...

"In the early years of his Senate career, Edwards voted to 'commend' the Million Mom March, to end private sales at gun shows, and to maintain long-term federal registration of gun buyer records. He voted for national registration of all gun show vendors, and voted to ban importation of ammunition magazines. There wasn't much in the way of gun control legislation that Edwards didn't support."

195,000 U.S. deaths blamed on hospital error

"As many as 195,000 people a year could be dying in U.S. hospitals because of easily prevented errors, a company said on Tuesday in an estimate that doubles previous figures."

"Lakewood, Colorado-based HealthGrades Inc. said its data covers all 50 states and is more up-to-date than a 1999 study from the Institute of Medicine that said 98,000 people a year die from medical errors."

-------
Sounds like hospital control is needed more desperately than gun control.

Drunk Driving Laws Are Out of Control

"When Pennsylvanian Keith Emerich went to the hospital recently for an irregular heartbeat, he told his doctor he was a heavy drinker: a six-pack per day. Later, Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation sent Emerich a letter. His driver's license had been revoked. If Emerich wanted it back, he'd need to prove to Pennsylvania authorities that he was competent to drive. His doctor had turned him in, as required by state law."

"The Pennsylvania law is old (it dates back to the 1960s), but it's hardly unusual. Courts and lawmakers have stripped DWI defendants of the presumption of innocence - along with several other common criminal justice protections we afford to the likes of accused rapists, murderers and pedophiles."

"In the 1990 case Michigan v. Sitz, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the magnitude of the drunken driving problem outweighed the 'slight' intrusion into motorists' protections against unreasonable search effected by roadblock sobriety checkpoints. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Rehnquist ruled that the 25,000 roadway deaths due to alcohol were reason enough to set aside the Fourth Amendment."

"The problem is that the 25,000 number was awfully misleading. It included any highway fatality in which alcohol was in any way involved: a sober motorist striking an intoxicated pedestrian, for example."

"An internal report says the shooting death of a black man by Pasadena police officers was justified."

"The shooting of 30-year-old Maurice Clark in April raised concerns among many in the city, who say police have long mistreated black residents."

"Police investigators say Clark ran away from two officers who had responded to a call of a man with a gun."

"During the chase, investigators say he fired one gunshot, though not in the direction of the officers. Officer Keith Gomez then fired six shots through a chain-link fence, striking Clark twice and killing him."

Notice that when a regular citizen shot a burglar with the thug's own gun recently, he was arrested.

Santa Clara County Assistant District Attorney Karyn Sinunu said she expected Walker would surrender to authorities.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A college student who answered a cell phone call in a Florida movie theater was pepper sprayed by an officer and charged with disorderly conduct, along with her boyfriend.

Warronnica Harris was at a movie theater Saturday night, watching the opening credits to 'Catwoman' when her cell phone rang.

Officer John Douglas shone a flashlight in her eyes and asked Harris and her boyfriend, Terrell 'KC' Tolson to leave. The couple said he pushed Harris in the hallway, then pepper sprayed both of them in the lobby.

Police denied the couple's account, saying Harris refused to end her cell phone conversation, yelled at Douglas and refused to leave the theater. Police said her boyfriend also refused to leave and threatened the officer.

Witnesses said the pair did nothing wrong.

"U.S. Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and his Republican challenger, former U.S. Rep. John Thune, take opposite positions on whether Congress should extend the nation's ban on various types of semi-automatic assault rifles, shotguns, pistols and related weaponry."

"Daschle is the only supporter of the ban among South Dakota's congressional delegation and candidates." ...

"Thune 'strongly' opposes reauthorizing the ban, according to John Wood, his deputy campaign manager. 'He does not favor federal restrictions on the Second Amendment,' Wood said."

"There is a lesson here for Libertarians. The path to liberty does mean advocating the use of The State in the intermediate term. To fail to do so is to fail to win office and effect any changes. The transitional measures are important."

"For example, talk of federal tax cuts is premature. The government has $7 trillion in debt to pay off. This money has already been spent or committed. Even with some massive cuts in discretionary spending, we still need to keep taxes high in order to begin to pay down the interest-bearing debt and to prepare for the retirement of the Baby-Boomers. This is not pleasant, but if it is not done, futures taxes will be higher. We can productively talk about simpler taxes - including taxes that we find unacceptable in the long run - but lower federal taxes are a dream for the future."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
When Pa was at home the gun always lay across those two wooden hooks above the door. ... The gun was always loaded, and always above the door so that Pa could get it quickly and easily, any time he needed a gun. — Laura Ingalls Wilder
