"Gun-control advocates say that Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign is divided about how vocal the senator should be in calling for the assault-weapons ban to be renewed." ...

"Asked if Kerry will highlight the issue in his campaign, Blaine Rummel, a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence said, 'There is some shiftiness.' "

"Another gun-control advocate said the campaign is divided on the matter and pointed out that Kerry does not mention gun control measures in his speeches."

"When former President Bill Clinton sought to frame differences between Democrats and Republicans in his prime-time convention speech Monday, he made a point of citing the soon-to-expire federal ban on semiautomatic assault weapons." ...

T"he ex-president's charges demonstrated how some Democrats hope to use the assault weapons issue against President Bush and members of Congress in the campaign."

"Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry supports extending the ban, which is due to expire Sept. 13 unless Congress renews it. ..."

"But while many Democrats would like to cast the issue in good-versus-evil terms, it's more complicated than it appears to be, like many matters of public policy."

"1 -- Since the new laws went into effect, there has not been a single massacre of four or more people."

"Well, not by guns, but there have been several using knives, carbon monoxide gas and arson reported by the Australian news media."

"2 -- Homicides committed with firearms have been declining since the 1997 ban took place."

"...Australia's murder rate dropped 11%, while the U.S. murder rate dropped 32% -- even though Americans bought 70 million guns during that same period.' "

"3 -- Since the gun ban, Australia has seen a drop in the use of firearms in armed robberies."

"It is true, only 6% of the robberies in 2001 involved a firearm. However the robbery rate has risen 70% since the ban went into effect. ..."

Kerry can't shoot deer or stop terror

"He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach... That's hunting.' "

"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally."

"Possibly his weird Vietnam nostalgia is getting out of control. Still, if I come across a guy in the woods in deer season inching through the undergrowth with a mouthful of bear scat, at least I'll know who it is."

"More than 7,000 people who should have been barred from buying guns were able to buy them anyway in 2002 and 2003, according to a Justice Department review released Monday."

"The government rarely prosecutes such cases, the report said."

"Federal law stipulates that gun buyers wait three business days before receiving their weapons so background checks can be conducted by the FBI. Of the 17 million gun purchases in the last two years, 122,000 were denied because of the checks."

According to JTO, "...the review further found that retrieval time took a year or more, allowing sufficient time for the illegal purchaser to commit a crime with the gun."

Question is: how many did?

"The ban on magazines and firearms -- passed in 1994 -- represents one of the most hated pieces of gun control ever enacted. But with less than two months to go (and Congress being in recess most of that time), the ban is scheduled to sunset on September 13, 2004."

"Anti-gun Senator Dianne Feinstein, however, is not giving up and is pushing hard to get the semi-auto ban tacked on to some other bill."

Praise for law permitting police to carry weapons across state lines

"A new federal law permitting working and retired police officers to carry their weapons in all 50 states was praised yesterday as a deterrent to crime and terrorism."

"The legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president exempts police officers and some other law enforcement personnel from needing permits to carry their guns when traveling outside their state of residence."

"The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act won approval after 10 years of lobbying by law enforcement groups, including the National Fraternal Order of Police. Without the new law, police officers could be charged with illegally possessing a gun in a state where they did not have a carrying permit."

-------
Yeah, we can't possibly prosecute "the elite" for breaking the law. They always must have special privileges not afforded to the "common man."

"An internal investigation by the Richmond Police Department has concluded that 'there were no violations of our existing policy' when a police supervisor deployed a pepper spray fogger inside a crowded East Main Street apartment May 30."

"But the city police policy governing the use of pepper spray foggers has been changed in the aftermath of the incident that forced more than 100 young people to flee down a 3-foot-wide stairway."

-------
Hmmm, let's see. There was nothing wrong with sending a throng of youngsters down a narrow stairway, possibly causing injury or death, but the regulations will have to be changed anyway? That's not suspicious or anything!

"Trooper Walasavage was on patrol Easter Sunday last year when he spotted a murder suspect and gave chase. 'The first thing I did was say a prayer. It was Easter Sunday. I thought it would be a quiet day but I ended up getting into a pursuit. Here's a guy that killed two people and was holding a girl hostage and holding a gun to her head,' Walasavage recalled."

"Police said the double murderer was Robert Hixson. They said he gunned down a brother and sister-in-law last year in the Poconos and kidnapped their daughter. It ended in Bucks County. Trooper Walasavage was able to talk to Hixson into freeing the girl, drop his gun and surrender. Several times, Walasavage said, Hixson threatened him with a gun."

"Consider firearms as the rough equivalent of a motor vehicle. Both require a degree of maturity and skill for proper operation. Both face concerns over safety and lawful application, since both are potentially deadly weapons. Both have restrictive provisions for their use (such as age, criminal background, drug abuse, etc.). Using the template of a driver’s license, we could explore federal legislation on firearms that would involve a test-based license - one for simple ownership, with a more extensive test for a concealed-carry permit. These exams - uniform, and nationally administered - would encompass knowledge of gun safety, gun laws, and a shooting-range assessment of minimal skill levels."

"A federal appeals court Wednesday upheld a 1998 Alabama law banning the sale of sex toys in the state, ruling the Constitution doesn't include a right to sexual privacy." ...

" 'If the people of Alabama in time decide that a prohibition on sex toys is misguided, or ineffective, or just plain silly, they can repeal the law and be finished with the matter,' the court said."

"On the other hand, if we today craft a new fundamental right by which to invalidate the law, we would be bound to give that right full force and effect in all future cases including, for example, those involving adult incest, prostitution, obscenity, and the like."

"Cousins Michael and Vincent Hickey were jailed for life for the 1978 killing of newspaper boy, Carl Bridgwater, 13, at Yew Tree Farm, in Staffordshire."

"After years of protesting their innocence, the convictions were quashed in 1997 and the pair were awarded compensation for their wrongful convictions and estimated loss of earnings."

"Michael Hickey, who was a teenager at the time of the murder, was awarded 990,000 pounds and Vincent Hickey was granted 506,220 pounds."

"However, the official assessor who made the awards then reduced the loss of earnings aspect by a quarter to take account of the amount he considered they would have had to spend on everyday living had they not been in jail."

They do not draw their guns. They pretty much just stand around for half an hour or so. "Metro Transit Police Officer Cherrall Curry-Hgler warned Willett to finish the candy before entering the station because eating or drinking in the Metro system is illegal."

Senate President Says Gun Advocates' Message "Outside the Realm of Reality"

"The presence of a firearm rarely defuses a potentially violent situation, but rather, escalates violence to the breaking point. Rather than advocating for more guns on the street, we should bring attention to the need for more policemen in high-crime areas. I may be out of line here, but I'd rather see the decision to use lethal force being made by a highly-trained safety expert."

"While I don't disagree with the argument that women's safety issues are very important in today's society, I think it's downright unconscionable to use scare tactics to advocate for diminishing gun control laws, and allowing more weapons on our streets."

Sheriff Larry Campbell's deputies are all carrying Taser stun guns now, and a deputy zapped Campbell with one this morning in law enforcement's newest rite of passage.

Tallahassee police have had a few stun guns for about a year, but not enough for every officer on patrol.

Tasers are being used by more than 5,000 agencies across the country, but not everyone is convinced they're as safe as they're supposed to be. Human rights groups think they're too cruel and want the government to independently test their effect on humans.

Our local lefty arts/culture rag, misleading the good people of Rochester when it comes to crime and self-defense.

1) "...taking precautions isn't enough, and he'd like the police to do more..." - The police aren't responsible for your protection, buddy.

2) They give some benign suggestions on avoiding crime, but don't directly advocate effective self defense. Good thing they clarify that their little list of measures is only to help you "feel" safe...but doesn't actually do anything to help you *be* safe!

3) They post a list of places to go for martial arts training - but no mention of the local S.C.O.P.E. chapter, which helps people through the NYS right-to-carry permit process free of charge.
