"Candidate Bush said during the campaign regarding justices, 'I would pick people that would be strict constructionists.'"

"For many, 'strict constructionist' is code for conservatives. They use it to describe jurists who interpret the constitution as written as a comparison to those judges who supposedly 'create law'."

"However, a strict interpretation of the words 'strict constructionist' would mean applying exactly what the framers of the constitution said, not what they could or would say in the present."

Three Lessons for the Great Debate About to Begin (Blog)

"I recall very well the debates over the nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Both featured the most elevated public discourse over constitutional interpretation in my lifetime. Of course, both nominations were also marred by ugly personal attacks and false charges. For the upcoming nomination, we can expect both types of discourse. To that end, some may wish to review the debate I recently had with Cass Sunstein over at LegalAffairs.org. Cass and others such as Jeff Rosen have promoted the trope 'Constitution in Exile' to describe those who favor enforcing the whole Constitution according to its original meaning. The alternative is to enforce only portions of the text according to whatever meaning yields 'good' results."

"'It is sheer lunacy,' said SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb, 'that a career criminal like Orozco has been cycled repeatedly through the criminal justice system at the same time California Attorney General Bill Lockyer and anti-gun state legislators have pushed every kind of gun control demagoguery they could imagine, from outright bans on some firearms, to cockamamie schemes like bullet serialization. While they've been working overtime to disarm law- abiding Californians, Orozco and people like him seem to get an abundance of 'second chance' opportunities to victimize people.'"

"Bob Barr's dismissal of the ASK program ...is paranoid bluster."

"As a parent who asks, I can attest that I couldn't care less if someone owns guns, enjoys shooting or is a National Rifle Association member. I simply won't let my children become a statistic by playing unsupervised in a home where guns are present. Further, every parent of whom I've ever asked this awkward question has been candid and appreciative."

"It was learned that most of those who availed of the amnesty are holders of .45 cal. pistols, while a few others have .357 magnum revolvers."

"Gun buyback programs do little to deter the worst criminals from spreading violence because people willing to surrender weapons to police aren't the people who commit the worst crimes."

"Yet buyback programs do reduce the number of guns, and each one removed eliminates the chance that someone will use it. The programs also have symbolic value and show communities that government and law enforcement care about reducing violent crime. Buybacks themselves won't solve the larger problem, but they can be one piece of the larger solution."

"John R. Lott Jr. states that the anti-gun crowd 'hysterically claimed that blood would flow in the streets after states passed right-to-carry laws letting citizens carry concealed handguns, but that never occurred.'"

"With our world-leading per capita murder rate, it seems as if the blood is already flowing in our streets. Lott and those who live in such a state of fear that they feel compelled to be armed might become more enlightened if they were to stop spewing meaningless statistics and start paying attention to the only number with real meaning: the daily body count in our streets."

"Having come from New York, I have seen the results of many gun buyback programs and all had two things in common. First, they were a dismal failure, and second, they were introduced by an administration seeking feel-good measures, as they had no answers on how to deal with the crime problem."

"In every case, the majority of guns turned in were useless pieces of junk. Gangsters, drug dealers and criminals do not use old, rusted guns that have been in some attic for 20 years. They use modern, high-powered, usually stolen guns and are not seeking a Target gift certificate in return for one of them."

Not only will they use lethal force more often but also quicker since they know their victim can legally open fire for defense purposes. 'We have more then doubled our civilian body armor sales in Florida recently'."
