"Our Constitution's Second Amendment is also under assault by the United Nations and global gun control advocates who met in New York last month to embrace an Arms Trade Treaty. Spearheaded by the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), the treaty is an outgrowth of the U.N. Program of Action, a 2001 agreement that calls for curbing the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons through global regulations. But 'small arms and light weapons,' as they relate to the treaty, would include firearms used by American hunters and sportsmen. The NRA is fighting valiantly, but they may be out-manned."

"The Second Amendment is, without question, an individual right. Though the courts all too frequently issue rulings in disparate ways, and even constitutional scholars fight over it, the reality is that if it were not, the words "the people" wouldn't have been used. Such pre-eminent experts on the Constitution as the men who helped craft it later made clear that the Second was intended to apply to all citizens. Even so, a majority of Americans favor more gun control rather than less."

"Politicians who cater to the majorities in these cities are often rabid supporters of gun control. ..."

"...Now that many states allow citizens to carry concealed weapons, the NRA is pushing to eliminate remaining restrictions on where those guns can be taken. Gun-control groups - and some employers - are fighting back. The outcome could decide whether more states expand the rights of licensed owners to carry their guns where they want, despite recent evidence that workplace gun bans do lower risk." ...

"The NRA will soon have billboards up in 10 to 15 states where ConocoPhillips has major interests, he says. The billboards will read: 'ConocoPhillips is No Friend of the Second Amendment.'"

"American gun law expert John Michael Snyder today blasted the Vatican’s permanent observer to the United Nations for public support of UN international gun control schemes."

"Snyder, a practicing Catholic and former Jesuit seminarian, said that, 'Archbishop Celestino Migliore’s public support for the proposed UN international arms control treaty is a direct attack on the God-given right of law-abiding citizens to self-defense. As such, it is an attack on the very right to life itself. Coming from an official of the world’s purportedly premier pro-life entity, it comes as a shocking example of public hypocrisy.'"

"When the president announced John Roberts' nomination to the United States Supreme Court, I had doubts." ...

"...He worked in the Reagan Justice Department, clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist and argued 39 cases before the Supreme Court. Thus, he was perfectly positioned to provide insights into the thinking of conservative justices - how to counter the objections they'd likely raise to the anti-Amendment 2 position."

"If Smith had gone to one of the many liberal lawyers at Hogan & Hartson and asked them to help Operation Rescue with a challenge to Roe v. Wade, or to assist the NRA in trying to overturn the assault weapons ban - what do you think the response would have been?"

"Jerry Kilgore would like you to think that Tim Kaine will take away your guns. This is about as likely as Tim Kaine taking away your goggles."

"While Jerry Kilgore brags about his ‘A’ rating from the NRA, we must consider some of the policies the NRA supports. You would think that the NRA simply wants to protect law-abiding gun owners who want to collect as many guns as they want to use for sport or home protection – and you’d be wrong."

"I once even heard some gun-rights advocates explain that it doesn’t matter if we do background checks to catch suspected terrorists who attempt to purchase firearms, because terrorists prefer to use bombs instead. Is that really the best excuse they can come up with?"

-------
KABA Note: No, Mr. Kaine. A fundamental right is not an "excuse." Your failure to recognize this fact makes you a very poor choice for Governor, indeed.

"...Government computers are notorious for having poor security. So what happens if some hacker manages to steal the national gun registry files and sell them to a criminal organization, like the outlaw motorcycle gang Hells Angels? Instead of randomly breaking into houses looking for weapons, they would now know exactly which houses to go to to obtain their desired weapons. They would know the address of the house, the names of the occupants, and even (I think) the ages of the occupants. And once this registry has been stolen, there would be no putting the genie back in the bottle -- everyone in the registry would either have to move or live in fear. That's a scary thought."

"Something is wrong here, and I don't know what it is. A female teacher employed in a local private high school allegedly has sex with some male students, and it is front-page news, not only locally, but nationally."

"Yet when an incident of gun violence, such as the shooting death of 18-year-old Jihhad Scales occurs in Albany, it is a 'below the fold' story. Or, even worse than the 'below the fold' coverage of a murder, are the numerous gun-related violence incidents such as: blind man robbed at gunpoint; man robbed and hit in head with gun; 15-year-old shot in arm; etc., that both the print and electronic media ignore completely, or bury inside the local section."

"Has gun-related violence become so prevalent in the Capital Region that our local news media feel it is no longer a 'story'? Or is it not 'sexy' enough to warrant the full attention it deserves?"

"The City of Columbus's draconian gun ban goes into effect today. There is a 90-day grace period, during which time gun owners can register their guns they feel may be affected by this ban with the city."

"PRO IS RECOMMENDING that people NOT register their guns, but move them out of the city until this matter is settled in the courts. There is a great deal of confusion about what guns this ban covers. Because a provision in the new law stipulates that guns that are registered cannot be later sold or willed to a gun owners' heirs upon her death, this is essentially a gun 'surrender/confiscation' law, as well. It makes no sense to register lawfully owned guns for later surrender to the city with no compensation, so we urge you to move and store your firearms outside the city limits."

"When burglars killed a guard at my neighbor's summer-house, I started thinking about self-defense."

"The Federal Law On Weapons adopted under Boris Yeltsin in 1996 has enabled five million Russians to buy guns for this purpose. In Moscow alone, some 400,000 people legally keep 470,000 weapons to protect themselves, their families, and property against potential assault in these troubled times."

"The law in Russia is extremely conservative compared with that in the United States. Russians can only buy smoothbore hunting rifles of minimum 80cm, gas pistols, or revolvers shooting rubber bullets. Safe use of this arsenal for five years allows purchase of a twin rifle or carbine. Stub-barreled firearms are a taboo for Russian citizens."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. — James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46
