One small island of sanity in the generally insane ocean of American gun culture is the near-complete federal ban on civilian possession of fully automatic weapons — machine guns. The nation got a bitter taste last year of what we’d be facing on a regular basis without that ban. On a Las Vegas night in October, 64-year-old businessman Stephen Paddock sprayed a music festival with more than 1,100 rounds in just 10 minutes from high in a nearby hotel, killing 58 people and wounding a surreal 851.

Chicago saw a new burst of bloody violence this weekend, with a string of shootings that killed at least one woman killed and wounded some 27 others. Still, the numbers were down from the previous weekend when a burst of gun violence left at least 11 people dead and around 70 wounded.

The gun legislation passed after the Parkland mass shooting was historic for many reasons, not the least of which was that it represented the first gun restrictions passed in Florida in more than 20 years.

I am a big fan of compact carbines and a companion pistol that can share the same caliber of ammo and magazine. What a great approach for a survival/hunting package. Some folks may not realize that Kel-Tec offers what I consider to be a great duo of guns in the 22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire); the CMR-30 and its companion the Kel-Tec PMR-30 pistol also in 22 Magnum. Aside from survival and hunting applications either of these two guns have practicality in defensive and target shooting uses. Additionally the 22 magnum cartridge has been time tested for hunting small to medium size game (there has also been more than just a few deer taken with the 22 magnum).

If you see me walking the floors of a trade show, like the annual SHOT Show held in Las Vegas, don't be surprised if I enthusiastically swerve off the wide carpeted paths to handle the Old West-style firearms like those offered by Cimarron F. A. Co. Some folks believe that high-quality replicas of the cartridge-firing wheel and lever guns of the late 1800s are just for history buffs and cowboy action shooting competitions. In truth, these guns are some of the most fun and satisfying models to run on the range or carry in the field. Don't let the patent dates on the frames fool you; those designers knew what they were doing.

Someday john correia will meet Jesus. As an ordained pastor, he has thought about how their first conversation will go. That is why he keeps his Heckler & Koch VP9 loaded with a 9-mm magazine in pristine condition. “You’re only going to draw a gun on the worst day of your life,” Correia told me. “You want to make sure the equipment works. I treat these mags like babies.” If he drops one and dents it, he never carries it again. “I don’t want Jesus to look at me and go, ‘How come you didn’t test your equipment, dummy?’?” Better to be shot dead in a fair fight. “At the very least I want him to say, ‘He smoked you! He was better than you!’ And I’ll say, ‘Yes, Lord, I got smoked.’?”

The theft of 20 guns from a Dover pawn shop in November 2016 was captured on a surveillance video recently released to The News Journal. Video of Dennell Harrison and Taron Walker spending more than an hour prying with a claw hammer through the wall of Capital Pawn as part of what prosecutors described as a "brazen" heist was presented as evidence in the prosecution of the two men.

A lesson is becoming evident regarding guns and Florida:

The rules are gone. There are officially no rules. The way the world once worked, you could righteously hit your horn because someone cut you off in traffic. You could ask a person to turn off his cell phone in a movie theater. You could have a discussion with a stranger at a neighborhood park on a Sunday about whether or not a kid should be allowed to skateboard by the basketball court.

Florida prosecutors on Monday filed manslaughter charges against the man who gunned down a father following an argument over a parking space — a killing that led to renewed scrutiny over the state's "stand your ground" law. Michael Drejka, 48, was being booked into the Pinellas County Jail with a bond issued at $100,000, said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who was initially criticized for deciding not to bring charges in the case.

Ninth Circuit Returns to Form, Upholds Bizarre California Gun Regulation

Well, we all knew it wouldn’t last. Weeks after two different Ninth Circuit panels surprisingly upheld Second Amendment rights by blocking California’s confiscation of large-capacity magazines and Hawaii’s ban on open carry, the nation’s most progressive circuit returned to form. In a ruling earlier this month, it upheld one of the most bizarre and nonsensical gun regulations in the nation. It did so by essentially ignoring the plain language of Heller and approving a legal regime that will naturally and inevitably lead to diminishing options for citizens who seek to lawfully exercise their constitutional right to self-defense.in the case.

The state’s Wildlife Resources Commission is allowing residents to hunt in Hyde County starting on Sept. 1, marking the first legal hunt in 45 years. There’s a big catch to this plan however: only 20 permits will be given out for the month-long hunt. Hundreds of hunters have reportedly already applied for the $250 licenses, which will be randomly selected by computerized lottery. The News & Observer noted that the odds of securing an alligator permit may be worse than getting a ticket to see “Hamilton” at the Durham Performing Arts Center this fall.

The confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court has been set for Sept. 4 before the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Washington Post reported. At the same time, the Boston Herald reported Friday that Democrats have been digging for dirt on the 53-year-old federal judge, who was nominated to fill the high court vacancy created by the retirement of Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Semi-Auto Trigger Tech: DA/SA to Striker-Fired

For 80 years, give or take a decade, the double-action (DA) revolver was the premier self-defense sidearm in the U.S., for law enforcement and private citizens alike. The entire idea behind the DA wheelgun was that, in a hurried, reactive situation the revolver could be drawn and fired instantly in double-action mode (the name derived from the fact that the trigger performed the double actions of cocking the firearm and firing it). However, if a more precise or difficult shot were needed, then the shooter could cock the hammer with their thumb and take advantage of the lighter single-action trigger pull.

If You Aren’t Trying To Change Someone’s Mind On Politics, You Aren’t Doing Your Job

They say you aren’t supposed to talk politics and religion, but who are “they,” and why on earth not? After all, those are the most interesting, and consequential, things. If you practice a religion, it’s probably a component of that religion to spread its “good news” to other people. There’s nothing wrong with that, even though Christians, in particular, are told to essentially “sit down and shut up” regarding the Bible’s take on things. But despite this, many Christians continue to spread the Gospel to their communities and the rest of the world, and that’s a good thing.

Will Some Conservatives Hand the Left a New Constitution?
“We’re in a battle for the future of our country,” former Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) told the annual convention of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) on Friday. “We’re either going to become a socialist, Marxist country like western Europe, or we’re going to be free.” Sadly, if the proposal for a Convention of the States pushed by Coburn and ALEC were to actually succeed, the chances of the United States being transformed into a socialist democracy like Germany or France would greatly increase.

This week we have two new guests, Aubrey Conway and Jessica, and some NRA announcements from Anthony! Jessica is an NRA member, and left-handed owner of a 9mm MMP Shield, who’s recently gotten into firearms ownership. She brings to the table a woman’s perspective about range etiquette, favorable opinions about the Gun For Hire Family, and her journey of exercising her Constitutional Right to bear arms!

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I now think the only way to control handgun use is to prohibit the guns. And the only way to do that is to change the Constitution. — M. Gartner, then President of NBC News, USA Today, January 16, 1992, pg. A9
