"The federal assault-weapons ban, scheduled to expire in September, is not responsible for the nation's steady decline in gun-related violence and its renewal likely will achieve little, according to an independent study commissioned by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ)." ...

"Congress-ional officials expect that the 1994 federal ban on "assault weapons" will expire Sept. 13 although similar legislation passed this year in the Senate, and a bill co-authored by U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4, awaits consideration in the House."

... "'Everyone here wants guns - it's a basic freedom, a basic right,' said Pat Rawlings, a soft-spoken middle aged mother of two, waiting for a hairdresser appointment in this quaint leafy Civil War town. 'Particularly in these times, you have to start down at the grass roots and allow people to defend themselves.'" ...

A surprising pseduo-editorial written by (gasp!) a reporter from the New York Times. While she clearly offers the gun owners' perspective, it's also pretty obvious, in parts of the article, that she's not exactly itching to cozy up to a pro-gun stance.

... "The state Senator from Chicago said he supports the 2nd Amendment rights of hunters and sportsmen to have guns. However, he supports renewal of the assault weapons ban that expires this year. He said the gun control issue needs to be reasonable for the entire state, and in the Chicago area, cheap handguns and other weapons create problems."...

Poster's Note: 1) The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution does not mention hunting or sportshooting. 2) "Reasonable gun control" is an oxymoron. 3) I wasn't aware that an inexpensive firearm (or any "other weapon" for that matter) was any more capable of "creating problems" than a crowbar or baseball bat. 4) Chicago already has some very stringent "reasonable" gun laws. Bah.

"The Virginia Citizens Defense League Inc., a Beltway-based Second Amendment group, has complained about the use of "brandishing" in our Aug. 9 editorial 'Extend the ban.'"

"The VCDL points out that the word "brandish" describes a criminal violation under the Virginia Code."

"However, league members were perfectly within their legal rights to wear their guns visibly...In a sense, the VCDL members were exercising not only their Second Amendment rights, but also their First Amendment rights, about which journalists are as zealous as any Smith & Wesson aficionado."
-------

Perhaps this is about as close to a retraction as we could hope for?

KABA wonders how the editors would feel if we changed their sentence slightly from:

"For example, the gun zealots who participated in a recent series of gun-brandishing incidents in Northern Virginia only threaten the rights of those who use and keep their arms responsibly" to

"For example, the integration zealots who participated in a recent series of lunch-counter sharing incidents in Northern Virginia only threaten the rights of those coloreds who use their civil rights responsibly"?

This was incorrect. The state militias have been 'nationalized' into the 'National Guard' and are now being used unconstitutionally for foreign occupations. A 27-year-old Horry County police officer has been charged with kidnapping and assault.

Horry County Police Chief Johnny Morgan says Bryan David Weich of Garden City has been suspended.

An arrest warrant says Weich entered a Surfside Beach home on August Eleventh with a pistol and woke a man, asking where he could find a woman. An affidavit says Weich made the man drive with him to a motel in Murrells Inlet and that Weich showed his badge to the desk clerk to get information about the woman.

An affidavit says on Sunday, Weich went to a Garden City home where the woman was sleeping, broke into the house, woke her up, forced her to the floor and kicked her repeatedly.

Weich has been with the department for six months.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
