"John Kerry is talking more openly about his personal connection to God and guns as he kicks off the general election campaign asking for support from conservative-leaning independent voters." ...

"Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat, said the gun vote could make the difference for Kerry in Pennsylvania."

"The fact that he is a hunter and handles guns so well, I think, is also very, very helpful..."

Handles guns well? What about that photo of him with finger on the trigger, eyes closed, pointing his rifle wherever...? That's called "handling guns well?"

"Marshall, 55, is a liberal-bashing, Bible-believing, gun-toting hunter - just like many of the white men at the core of the GOP's base - and he voted for George W. Bush four years ago. But he's disgusted by the administration's environmental record, including its proposal in July to open more public-owned wilderness areas to new roads."

" 'Conservation is conservative,' he said. 'Bush is a gross liberal.' "

"Establishment politicians want to "get tough" on crime with more gun control laws, longer prison sentences, and larger police forces. Yet robberies, rapes, and homicides go down when states permit civilians to carry concealed weapons. Studies show that longer prison sentences, although costly for the taxpayer, won't deter criminals. Still others show that prohibition, whether of alcohol or of drugs, doubles the homicide rate by empowering organized crime."

"The (Bloomington) Pantagraph newspaper in central Illinois has sent a letter to Moore and his production company, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., asking Moore to apologize for using what the newspaper says was a doctored front page in the film, the paper reported Friday. It also is seeking compensatory damages of $1."

"A scene early in the movie that shows newspaper headlines related to the legally contested presidential election of 2000 included a shot of The Pantagraph's Dec. 19, 2001, front page, with the prominent headline: 'Latest Florida recount shows Gore won election.' "

"Strong sales of revolvers and pistols during the past year have helped Smith & Wesson recapture its ranking as the top handgun maker in the United States from Sturm, Ruger & Co."

"Springfield-based Smith & Wesson had been the handgun sales leader in the early 1990s. Its rival in Southport, Conn., took the top spot after Smith & Wesson signed a safety deal with the federal government which many customers believed curtailed their constitutional right to buy guns."

"But Smith & Wesson sold nearly $82 million in handguns in the fiscal year ending April 30, a 25 percent increase over the previous year, the company reported."

"It would be common sense for Congress to extend the three-day waiting period to permit the completion of background checks. This would prevent the guns from being sold, and save the time, money and energy of trying to recover them after sales that should not have been allowed to begin with."

-------
The assumption here is that those intent on committing crimes couldn't get guns via another means. Considering that relatively few criminals get their guns legally, this would generally affect people who are no danger to society in the first place.

"It was 15 minutes before 3 on the afternoon of Friday, July 16 when Richard Brooks spotted a white sport utility vehicle weaving south on the Robert Moses Causeway and decided to follow."

"Brooks, a retired New York City police lieutenant and part-time Babylon bay constable, switched on the flashing roof lights, pulled his Jeep Liberty behind the SUV, and radioed the town dispatcher for backup."

"But as the low-speed four-mile chase wound over the causeway, west on Ocean Parkway, then back again east before entering a gated beach community, help never arrived."

"The incident ended at 3:08 p.m. when the man Brooks was pursuing ran inside his house, pointed a 12-gauge shotgun out a second-story window and shot Brooks in the chest as he stood in the driveway. Twenty-three minutes after he first called for help, Brooks died alone on James Wilson's driveway."

A former McKees Rocks policeman will spend 21 months in federal prison for selling a gun that had been confiscated while he was with the department, and then lying about the transaction to FBI agents."

"I picked up a copy of the 2004-05 Georgia hunting regulations this past week and found only a few changes of any consequence. Dove season now is statewide rather than in zones; the state has boosted the number of alligator hunting permits and opened more areas; hunting and fishing licenses now are issued yearly from date of purchase rather than for a specific yearly period; and a new law passed by the general assembly allows for residents 60 and up to purchase a lifetime license for $95."

"As for the senior discount, at first glance I couldn't see much of a deal for seniors since a combination hunting and fishing license costs only $17 and at age 65 is free."

The termination came one day before his year of probation was due to end, a period during which an officer can be removed from duty at the discretion of the mayor, with little right to an appeal."

"Retail giant Kmart has settled out of court a lawsuit over the sale of a gun to a schizophrenic Park City man who used it to commit suicide." ...

"In their 1997 lawsuit, the Eslingers had claimed the Troy, Mich.-based Kmart was negligent in selling a 12-gauge shotgun in 1996 to their son, Ryan, who used the firearm the same day to kill his pet dog and then himself."

"The couple said store employees failed to require proper identification and should not have sold a firearm to a mentally ill person. Kmart attorneys responded that the employees did nothing wrong, including accepting a passport for identification."

-------
Are these people really trying to claim that somehow K-Mart employees should have known that the guy was mentally ill? Are they really going to claim that if a driver's license or some other form of identification was presented the staff could have somehow deduced that the man was schizophrenic? Are they really attempting to hold a store liable for the voluntary actions of an adult human being?

Just follow the money, and you'll understand the reason for this absurdity.

"To live in this city and other urban areas of Brazil is to hear the frequent rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire. As many as 20 million firearms are in circulation in this nation of 180 million people, which has one of the highest rates of gun deaths in the world."

"Now, officials hope to stem that tide with an ambitious plan to disarm the populace by buying back weapons and making it harder to own them. Under a new law hailed by supporters as the most sweeping gun-control measure in South America, only Brazilians with valid reasons - police and security guards, for example - are allowed to carry firearms in public. Ordinary citizens who own guns must register them, turn them in or face jail time."
