Central Texas Gun Works Owner Michael Cargill has been going to Habana Restaurant in Austin for years, but his most recent visit took a violent turn.

"I kind of turned and looked at him," Cargill said. "I guess the way I looked at him – he didn’t like that."

Cargill claims a man in the restaurant parking lot threatened him with a large knife.

"He said he was going to flatten my tires, and I’m like, no you’re not going to flatten tires," Cargill said. "He said well, I’m going to stab you instead."

Cargill says he always carries a firearm but wanted to deescalate the situation by disarming the man and getting him away from the business.

A ban on assault weapons that Connecticut put in place after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting is constitutional, a federal appeals court said Friday, as it rejected challenges by gun rights advocates who claim it violates the Second Amendment.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said groups challenging a 2013 law banning assault weapons and a second gun control law enacted a decade later could not show that the guns they are still able to possess, including several semi-automatic handguns, are not sufficient for self-defense purposes.

I’m a big budget red dot guy; in fact, I dare to say I have expertise in the subject. As a young, broke gun owner, I quickly learned the ins and outs of budget red dots. For years, the king of budget red dots for me was the Bushnell TRS 25. It was an optic I couldn’t kill. Then I jumped on the SIG Romeo5 bandwagon, and now the new king is the Holosun ARO.

The ARO seeks to replace the Holosun HS403 series of red dots. I own a 403, and it’s a good little dot for the money. In fact, I’m sure plenty of people have the HS403 series and see them as the king of the budget red dot. The ARO is part of Holosun’s slow remodel of their lineup and the eventual ditching of numbered models.

It is heartening to gun owners to see that the Trump Administration, quite the opposite of the previous administration, doesn’t fill top roles in essential law enforcement agencies with rabid anti-gunners. It’s even better still when President Donald Trump appoints solid pro-Second Amendment thinkers to such positions.

That’s the case with the recent appointment of Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey being appointed the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) co-deputy director.

Attorney General Bondi published a proposed rule that would reinvent how people may receive relief from firearm disabilities. The rule would return control of the decades-dormant program to the DOJ.

The federal relief from firearms disability program has been dormant since the early 1990s. Formerly, those who were barred from firearm ownership had a pathway to have their rights restored. In 1992, the Violence Policy Center published a paper arguing the program was harmful and needed to be put to an end. VPC successfully petitioned Congress about the alleged issues with the program and it was defunded.

A quiet night for one household in Florida was disturbed by one of the most unlikely home invaders: a black bear. Unfortunately for the bear, the Florida homeowner is either a gun nut or a staunch believer in the Second Amendment for the right to bear arms. Hence, the homeowner whipped out his assault rifle equipped with a tactical flashlight and started blasting at the intruder, likely not knowing that it was a bear (graphic video warning):

Ed.: Story includes video of homeowner clearing his house, then encountering the bear at close range.

For a year now, students on West Virginia higher education campuses have been permitted to possess and carry concealed handguns. This change came after the state Legislature passed the West Virginia Campus Self-defense Act in March of 2023 which was made effective in July of 2024.

However, after hundreds of thousands in investments by higher education institutions, very few students have utilized campus gun storage lockers.

“The university dedicated two secure rooms for handgun storage, with a total of 72 lockers. During the 2024-25 academic year, one locker was rented; however, it was never used,” said Fairmont State University Chief of Staff Dr. Brian Selmeski.

A federal appeals court on Friday rejected a pair of challenges from gun rights groups targeting Connecticut’s restrictions on AR-15 ownership, which tightened significantly after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

A Second Circuit panel ruled that the state’s law, which imposes restrictions on “unusually dangerous weapons,” is consistent with the United States’ historical tradition of gun ownership, deeming the law constitutional.

The appeals court said the Second Amendment lets legislators implement targeted regulations designed to protect residents and their children from experiencing tragedies like the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that claimed 26 lives.

The ruling came at an early stage for two lawsuits brought by individuals and gun rights groups. It upheld a Connecticut judge's ruling that plaintiffs failed to demonstrate a sufficient likelihood that they would win their challenge to block enforcement of the laws while the lawsuits proceed.

On Wednesday, an Obama-appointed federal judge in Albany, New York, Mae D’Agostino, ruled that New York State must issue out-of-state concealed carry permits to those who apply.

Carl Higbie of Newsmax and two other Americans brought the case with the help of Gun Owners of America (GOA). Mr. Higbie travels to New York City regularly for work but does not live in the state. Being a public figure, Higbe wanted to carry a firearm within the state to protect himself, but since he is not a resident of the Empire State, it was almost impossible to get a concealed carry permit, despite having a Connecticut concealed carry permit.

Florida medical marijuana advocates and Second Amendment supporters are cheering a federal appeals court ruling that federal restrictions barring people who use cannabis for medical reasons from firearms purchases violate the Second Amendment.

“Based on Appellants’ factual allegations, Appellants cannot be considered relevantly similar to either felons or dangerous individuals based solely on their medical marijuana use,” a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit said late Wednesday.

“Accordingly, the Federal Government has failed, at the motion to dismiss stage, to establish that disarming Appellants is consistent with this Nation’s history and tradition of firearm regulation.”

“Confirmed Judges, Confirmed Fears” is a blog series documenting the harmful impact of President Trump’s judges on Americans’ rights and liberties. It includes judges nominated in both his first and second terms.

Trump Tenth Circuit judge Allison Eid cast the deciding vote to overturn a lower court ruling and enjoin a New Mexico law calling for a seven-day waiting period before any firearm purchase can be completed. George W Bush nominee Timothy Tymkovich wrote the opinion, and Obama nominee Scott Matheson dissented, in the August 2025 case of Ortega v Grisham.
