A shooting overnight Tuesday left one man dead and another injured, the Dyersburg Police Department said.
Dyersburg Police said officers were sent to Ab's Vape and Tobacco Shop at 305 S. Main Street just before 11:00 Tuesday night. Officers said they found 25-year-old Nireonte Mayberry dead at the scene.
Police said 20-year-old Jaylon Brown was not at the scene when officers got there, but was found later while trying to get medical attention for a gunshot wound; he was airlifted to Regional One in Memphis for treatment.
Dyersburg PD said the case was still being investigated, but their early information suggests that this was a case of self-defense. |

The hearing, now in its third day, revisits the terrifying events that unfolded when two armed jewelry store robbers hijacked a UPS truck and led police on a 25-mile chase through rush hour traffic. The pursuit ended in a hail of gunfire that killed UPS driver Frank Ordoñez and innocent bystander Richard Cutshaw, who was caught in traffic ahead of the truck.
...
Prosecutors argue that "stand your ground" does not apply in this case, pointing out that the two victims were not aggressors and that police fired more than 200 rounds into a truck with a hostage inside, surrounded by helpless drivers.
Joe Merino, Ordoñez's stepfather, reflected on the tragedy: "You wonder what was going through his head during those 25 miles." |

Monday the Marion County Prosecutors Office filed a Motion to Dismiss the charges against Mockabee, one week before a new jury was to be impaneled, citing “Upon speaking to jurors after the trial, one juror held out for a verdict to the lesser included charge of voluntary manslaughter while the remaining jurors would have returned a not guilty verdict,” and, “the Defendant testified at trial alleging self-defense. Upon speaking with the jurors, they appeared receptive to the Defendant’s testimony,” and, “the original homicide detective assigned to this case became unavailable after the homicide and has since left IMPD,” ... |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court for review in Viramontes v. Cook County, SAF’s challenge to the Cook County, Ill., ban on so-called “assault weapons.”
Originally filed in 2021, the case was put “on hold” during which time the Supreme Court handed down the 2022 Bruen decision, and the Illinois legislature passed the nearly identical statewide ban on “assault weapons,” which SAF has also challenged, in Harrel v. Raoul. SAF is joined in Viramontes by the Firearms Policy Coalition and two private citizens. |

A man challenging his indictment for owning an unregistered firearm suppressor failed to show a federal appeals court that the National Firearms Act is unconstitutional or that a search of his home lacked probable cause.
George Peterson failed to show evidence that the NFA is used towards abusive means by charging exorbitant fees or subjecting applicants to lengthy processing times, Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod said. The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed the lower court’s decision to deny Peterson’s motion to dismiss the indictment and his motion to suppress evidence gathered at a search of his home. ...

The Supreme Court has long used history and tradition as one of its many tools for constitutional interpretation. This use has increased in recent years, including in cases involving the highly contested issue of gun regulation.
In a recent article, Brian DeLay of the University of California, Berkeley critiques historical narratives often invoked in Second Amendment litigation following the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. In that decision, the Court struck down a New York law that heightened the standards for concealed carry license eligibility because it was inconsistent with “historical tradition” and the “plain text” of the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), along with its partners, has filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court, urging it to review the case of Viramontes v. Cook County. This legal challenge targets Cook County, Illinois’s ban on so-called “assault weapons,” a measure that SAF argues infringes upon the Second Amendment rights of its residents.
The case, originally filed in 2021, was put on hold after the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, which established a new standard for evaluating gun control laws based on historical tradition. |

Non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, can be kind of troubling. That’s especially true when the government does the bidding of those NGOs or vice versa. Too close a relationship can be an issue.
And we saw that when DOGE started digging earlier this year.
But not all of those relationships were financial. Some were cases of NGOs looking to allies in government to step in and help them advance their agenda, such as gun control.
The National Shooting Sports Federation, which represents the firearm industry, is asking the FTC to do a little digging. |

Garrett’s attorney, state Rep. Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.), says prosecutors are leaning on an Ohio law that bans drivers and passengers from having loaded firearms within reach inside a vehicle. But he argues another section of the law creates an exemption for concealed carry license holders. Garrett holds a lifetime license in Indiana.
“How is that possible in the state of Ohio that you’re going to commit a crime if you tell them and you’re going to commit a crime if you do tell them, even if you have a CCW,” Williams said.
Williams also pointed to the Ohio attorney general’s website, which says the state recognizes concealed handgun licenses issued by every other state. |

A Florida appeals court has reversed the summary denial of a post-conviction motion for Jose Ramon Nieves Rivera, a man serving a life sentence for first-degree murder. The Fourth District Court of Appeal has ordered a new evidentiary hearing, ruling that Nieves Rivera’s original defense counsel may have been “ineffective” for failing to call witnesses and an expert to support his self-defense claim.
The case, which originated from a shooting in St. Lucie County in 2015, centered on Nieves Rivera’s assertion that he acted in self-defense during a late-night argument that left one person dead and two others injured. |

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is just days away in Mississippi. Hunters can buy gear for the upcoming season. The holiday means state sales tax will not be charged on eligible items.
Basically, the deal applies to gear that will help anyone who hunts with bows or guns equip themselves and their weapons ahead of the fall hunting season. There are limits, however. You can get ammo, arrows, cases and more. But these deals won't help you get an ATV for cheaper or help you deck out the camp. |

If you set out looking for an enemy, you’ll find one. Hell, you’ll create one if you have to. That is precisely what New York gun controllers are devoting their energy to these days, as they target what they say radicals refer to as the “New Second Amendment,” groups of like-minded individuals who share information on 3D printing and how to use it to develop and improve privately made firearms technology. Make no mistake, these groups, known as “3D2A” and ”3D Printing For All,” are now being investigated for nothing more than being gun enthusiasts who use open-source websites to share files and schematics of their own designs. |

The National Rifle Association (NRA), joined by three individual members and 2nd Amendment Armory, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Florida’s three-day waiting period on firearm purchases.
The case, Dunn v. Glass, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida on August 25, 2025.
The Issue at Hand Florida’s mandatory waiting period dates back to 1998, when voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring a three-day delay between the purchase and delivery of any handgun. In 2018, lawmakers expanded the law to cover all firearms. |

Once again, the Fifth Circuit has wrongly upheld the National Firearms Act in a dangerously flawed opinion that tramples the Constitution and disregards our nation’s history. Suppressors are unquestionably “arms” under the plain text of the Second Amendment. Nothing in our nation’s history of arms regulation supports the government’s unconstitutional taxation and registration mandates. Indeed, the federal government’s NFA scheme is not just dangerous to liberty, it is blatantly unconstitutional. FPC will continue to stand with Mr. Peterson and his counsel as they weigh every option in the fight ahead to put an end to the NFA and its unconstitutional regulations on suppressors and other protected arms. |

The shooting happened during a confrontation between two former friends and fellow cabinet makers, according to the investigative case file obtained by 40/29 News through an Arkansas Freedom of Information Act request.
Body camera video from Lavaca Police shows officers arriving at a home on East Main Street after reports of a shooting. Police found Brad Jones, of Charleston, with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Jones died at a local hospital. |
