"PATRIOT ACT: Backs extending 2001 law that expanded government's power to detain, search and monitor people targeted in terrorist probes. Would expand law to give federal law enforcement agents power to issue administrative subpoenas to seize records quickly, to ban bail for terrorist suspects, and to expand application of death penalty in terrorism cases. Supreme Court rulings earlier this year rejected administration's sweeping denial of due-process rights for detainees accused of complicity in terrorist activities." ...

And you think Bush will protect our gun rights?

-------
"President Bush yesterday joined forces with Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, to mount legal and legislative challenges to third-party attack ads, including those that question Sen. John Kerry's Vietnam record." ...

"...the president wants to stop the ads, along with other spots by third-party groups, known as 527s because of their tax designation. Yesterday, he telephoned Mr. McCain, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, from Air Force One and enlisted him in a planned lawsuit to force the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) to quash the ads."

-------
First we had the Incumbent Protection Act, disingenuously named "Campaign Finance Reform."

Now the assault on your First Amendment rights continues.

"There are only about 2.6 million of them, but they could hold the future of the nation in their hands."

"They are undecided voters juggling whether they'll opt for George W. Bush or John Kerry. If this year's election is as close as expected, they are likely to decide it." ...

"Polled were 501 people who said they were likely to vote but were undecided or persuadable. Of them, 54.7 percent are men, 60.2 percent are married and 79.5 percent are white. Just 12.9 percent are NASCAR fans."

"They tend to be more educated than most voters..." ...

"...more are pro-gun than for gun control, 49.8 to 32.4 percent; 19 percent favor gay marriage, 36 percent favor civil unions and 38 percent favor a ban."

"The so-called assault-weapons ban is about to sunset. About time."

"It was one of the goofiest gun laws on the books. It outlawed guns because they look mean — the perfect law for a superficial world."

"The assault-weapons ban was racial profiling for guns."

"Before we start, you should know I used to be like you when it came to firearms. I had a religious-like hatred of guns. In fact, I was a member of the anti-gun organization Handgun Control Inc." ...

"The very term 'assault weapon' is a politically manufactured term made to emotionalize a certain look of a gun. What is an assault riffle? Emotionalists answer that the same way social conservatives define pornography: I know it when I see it." ...

"If you still have to outlaw something that looks nasty, ban Ted Kennedy."

Legal Community Less Trusting of FBI Bullet ID Evidence

The ABA (American Bar Association) Journal discusses recent studies that question how the FBI has used the evidentiary technique called Comparative Bullet Lead Analysis.

-------
"Ronnie Lee Bowling is on Kentucky’s death row for two murders he claims he didn’t commit. And one of the things that helped put him there was the testimony of an FBI laboratory examiner who said he had 'matched' several bullets recovered from the bodies of the two victims to a box of unspent cartridges found in Bowling’s mobile home."

"There was no other physical evidence tying Bowling to the crimes—no DNA, no fingerprints, no blood, no hair or fibers, no gunshot residue."

"In fact, the only direct evidence of Bowling’s guilt was the FBI examiner’s testimony about the matching bullets and the word of a police informant who testified that Bowling had confessed to the two murders while they were housed together in the same jail."

"Bowling contends that he never even spoke to the informant, who had struck a deal with prosecutors to trade testimony in Bowling’s state trial in exchange for a favorable disposition of the federal mail fraud charges then pending against him."

"And now the FBI examiner’s testimony in the case is being called into question by a recent study that raises serious doubts about the validity of the agency’s so-called comparative bullet-lead-analysis evidence."

Many child deaths caused by drowning

"The Center for Disease control reports that accidents involving water result in more deaths of children than firearms. About half of all aquatic accidents happen in swimming pools."

-------
The recommendations to reduce drowning accidents include knowing how to swim, swimming in supervised areas and obeying posted signs. Nowhere do you see calls for swimming bans "for the children." And yet, many of the same doctors who prescribe education as a panacea for drownings, are insisting that gun bans are a way to reduce firearms deaths.

"Keyes, who said he owns two handguns himself, then went on to defend his stance by digging up our poor founding fathers, and all Americans' red, white and blue right to keep and bear arms."

KABA Note: Never mind that the right to keep and bear arms and the historical record for the reason for its inclusion in our body of laws is directly related to the Founding Fathers' writings.

"If the President and the Congress do not act now, the 10-year-old Federal Assault Weapons Ban will expire on September 13. If that happens, these deadly killing machines, semi-automatic military style assault weapons, will return to the streets of America just as our children are returning to school in our community." ...

Although the bill (AB50) has been voted on repeatedly, resulting in 35-36 votes (two votes short of passage), a practice known as "ghost voting" -- and apparently an open secret in the legislature -- allowed the bill to pass on a revote, after the first vote failed along the usual 35-36 split."

A Clayton County teenager has been charged with bringing a loaded gun to school.

Police and school authorities confiscated a .358 revolver from a book bag in Antonio Hamm's locker at Mundy's Mill High School on Friday after an anonymous caller alerted them to the weapon, said Capt. Jeff Turner of the Clayton County Police Department.

Hamm, 18, later admitted to bringing the gun to school for protection from gang members, Turner said.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Today the taxing power, rather than chattel slavery, is the instrument by which the parasitical element of the population subsists. And that element, which includes politicians, panics at the slightest reduction in the state's power to plunder. Once you start liberating taxpayers, even a little tiny bit, nobody knows where it may end. —Joseph Sobran
