Hampton police continue to investigate what they say was an attempted armed robbery of a food delivery driver on Marion Rd. and the shooting death of a man found nearby.

“In a way, it is scary," Tanika Robinson said when asked about her reaction to the police activity on her street Friday morning.

Robinson lives on Marion Rd., but said she didn’t see the police activity.

According to police, just before 1 a.m., someone tried to rob a food delivery driver at gunpoint. Police say the driver pulled out a gun, and the driver and robber shot at each other. The robber then ran away.

Two national gun rights organizations are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Cook County's ban on assault-style weapons in hopes that such a decision would overturn similar bans nationally, including the statewide ban Illinois lawmakers enacted in 2023.

The Firearms Policy Coalition and the Second Amendment Foundation filed a petition with the court Wednesday, asking it to reverse the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. In June, the 7th Circuit said plaintiffs in the case had shown no reason for the court to reverse its own precedents that have upheld assault weapons bans, including a 2019 decision upholding the Cook County law.

Today, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) condemned a decision by Chief United States District Judge Denise J. Casper that upheld Massachusetts’s ban on modern, constitutionally protected handguns and granted summary judgment to the state.

“The Court’s opinion is as dangerous as it is wrong. Incredibly, the judge held that Massachusetts’s handgun ban doesn’t even implicate the Second Amendment. In this bizarre and deeply flawed decision, the Court effectively said governments could ban every handgun make and model but one. This decision is absurd, lawless, and impossible to reconcile with binding Supreme Court precedent or the text and history of the Constitution,” said FPC President Brandon Combs.

If the First, Fourth, Seventh, Ninth, and D.C. Circuits won't extend the right to bear arms to assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, what will the Second Circuit do? Come for the inevitable holding, stay so we can debate your humble summarist's view that "history and tradition" is just another way of saying "intermediate scrutiny."

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the National Rifle Association is no friend to the Second Amendment. If you weren’t aware, the organization supported the National Firearms Act (1934) and the Gun Control Act (1968), two pieces of federal legislation that were both wildly unconstitutional. If you’re looking for right-to-bear-arms groups that are ideologically sound and don’t have a record of aiding the federal government in grabbing our guns, try Gun Owners of American or Firearms Policy Coalition.

In the aftermath of a trans murderer killing two children and wounding 17 others in an attack at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, gun-ban groups were quick to blame private gun ownership, some even releasing statements before police had held the first press conference.

While that’s nothing new—gun-ban groups and the so-called “mainstream” media always blame the gun, and gun owners, for every horrific crime—it didn’t sit well with the pro-freedom folks at the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). Before the day’s end, CCRKBA had released its own statement expressing disgust at the rush to judgment and push for more ineffective gun laws.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is exploring calling a special session on gun control this fall, according to a senior administrative official familiar with the matter, and is making calls to lawmakers on the subject.

This comes two days after a mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, in which a shooter killed two schoolchildren and injured 18 others during a morning Mass. Less than 24 hours before, a separate shooter opened fire at a south Minneapolis intersection, injuring six and killing one person.

NE: Nebraska Supreme Court Upholds Second Amendment Standing

The case centered on a key legal question: can citizens challenge a law before they’ve been arrested for violating it? A lower court had previously dismissed the lawsuit, arguing that the plaintiffs lacked standing because they hadn’t yet been prosecuted under the city’s ordinances. However, the Nebraska Supreme Court reversed that decision, agreeing with the LJC’s argument that the city’s laws had already forced individuals to change their behavior to avoid prosecution, thereby causing a sufficient “injury in fact” to grant them standing.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for D.C. said Thursday it seized six firearms from a student after its agents saw an “alarming social media post” that made a potential threat to a local school.

The ATF confirmed with WTOP it collaborated with the Metro Transit Police Department to execute a search warrant Wednesday at the residence where the student lived. The teen was placed under arrest and officials seized six weapons and over 50 bullets.

So, after suffering the effects of yet another mass shooting in our country, this time at a Catholic school in Minnesota where a gunman shot 17 people, mostly children, killing some, I ask again, “Why is the United States the only place among our peer nations to allow virtually unrestricted sales and ownership of firearms.”

In fact, there are more firearms in the United States than there are residents: with an estimated 120.5 firearms per every 100 people. In a distant second place is the Falkland Islands with 62.1, and in third place is Yemen with 52.8 per every 100 residents.

The Oklahoma Survivor's Act is a new law that provides sentencing relief for survivors of domestic violence and abuse who are convicted of crimes linked to their abuse.

How did it become law?

The Act was first introduced as Senate Bill 1470 in 2023, but failed to pass. In 2024, it was reintroduced and revised as Senate Bill 1835. Governor Kevin Stitt initially vetoed the revised bill in April before signing it into law on May 21, 2024.

The law took effect on Aug. 29, 2024.

Broward Circuit Court Judge Ernest Kollra listened to testimony from more witnesses who were stuck in traffic when a shootout began between several officers and a pair of suspected jewelry store robbers who stole a UPS truck and had a hostage on board.

Jose Mateo, one of the four Miami-Dade Police officers indicted, is claiming self-defense for his actions to stop the suspects, which led to the death of UPS driver Frank Ordonez and bystander Richard Cutshaw.

In a significant policy announcement aimed at strengthening self-defense rights, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has called on the federal government to amend the Criminal Code to establish a presumption of reasonableness regarding the use of force in home invasion scenarios. Speaking at a press conference in Brampton, Ontario, Poilievre indicated that if the government does not take action, his party will introduce a private member’s bill in the fall to implement these changes.

New York State, and particularly New York City, consider themselves outside the Constitution and federal law, above both. They’re special, more evolved than the Deplorables of Flyover Country. This is particularly obvious where the Second Amendment is concerned. New York thinks itself above such trifles, and despite the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment decisions—Bruen (2022) is the most recent—continues to write blatantly unconstitutional laws disarming the law-abiding while doing nothing to disarm criminals.

On the heels of the shocking and seemingly random murder of a couple in an Arkansas state park while they were walking a trail with their young children, many are revisiting their self-defense plans in the great outdoors.

Following the heinous murders, the head of the Arkansas State Police, Col. Mike Hagar, spoke before a legislative subcommittee, opining that “the more good people that we have with weapons and the ability to defend themselves, the better we all are.” Col. Hagar went on to express his concerns with “gun-free zones” within the state parks.

TN: Judges rule Tennessee's gun limits in parks and playgrounds are unconstitutional

A panel of Tennessee judges has ruled against two state restrictions on carrying guns, including in public recreational areas such as playgrounds and parks.

The case has been another test of the limits of a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that has allowed gun rights advocates to take aim at more Second Amendment restrictions nationwide.

The Tennessee laws that were deemed unconstitutional include one that generally outlaws carrying a gun in a park or similar area, except for someone with a permit to carry a handgun; and a second for the somewhat ambiguous offense of the “intent to go armed,” which includes broad exceptions and legal defenses. Both are misdemeanors.

But behind the headlines is the Silencer Shop Foundation—a nonprofit quietly (and now not so quietly) working to dismantle the laws that restrict your right to own common firearm accessories.

Donald Trump has, of course, done a lot of shocking things as president, things even previous Republicans wouldn’t have done. We focus most of our coverage on those things, and rightly so. But on one issue, he’s been a pretty standard Republican president, which is to say to say he’s been horrible and wicked in the standard way. The issue is guns. Before the Minneapolis shooting fades out of the news cycle, let’s look at the grisly Trump record, which has largely passed under the radar.

The millions of law-abiding Americans who have chosen to carry a concealed firearm are putting “everyone involved at risk,” the ATF announced this week in a tweet on X.

“Take a look into our world. This is a scenario @ATFWasington frequently faces when combatting violent crime and maintaining public safety. Many people attempt to conceal firearms on their person or belongings which puts everyone involved at risk. #MakeDCSafeAgain #ATF,” the ATF tweeted on X.

As you can imagine, ATF’s message received hundreds of overwhelmingly negative responses including many that are not fit to reprint.

After the deadly attack at a school church service, the arch-conservative Fox News presenter Trey Gowdy surprisingly called for stricter gun laws - a taboo among conservatives in the USA.

Gowdy appeared on the program "Outnumbered" and discussed the incident in Minnesota in which two schoolchildren were killed and 17 people injured. Trey Gowdy himself hosts the Fox program "Sunday Night in America".
