... "The mythology of the dangerous anarchists started in Seattle. The prevailing wisdom holds that 'Black-Bloc' anarchists became violent, rampaged and shut down the World Trade Organization meetings. But that conventional view is inconsistent with the findings of the Seattle City Council's WTO Accountability Review Committee."

"The committee's report found that with few exceptions 'demonstrations were overwhelmingly lawful.' The report added: 'the number of demonstrators who engaged in property crimes or acts of violence was a very small fraction of the entire group....well under one percent...'"

"The heated rhetoric around those few had real consequences. The Seattle report noted 'troubling examples of seemingly gratuitous assaults on citizens, including use of less-lethal weapons like tear gas, pepper gas, rubber bullets, and 'beanbag guns,' by officers who seemed motivated more by anger or fear than professional law enforcement.'" ...

"The Bush administration said Monday it will give people who hunt and fish new access to hundreds of thousands of acres of lands and streams within 17 national wildlife refuges and wetlands."

"The decision as the Republican National Convention was opening in New York was announced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service."

"Asked if it might help President Bush's re-election efforts, the agency's director, Steve Williams said, 'This is just another example of the president's commitment to sportsmen.'" ...

Congress, president, must not allow federal assault weapons ban to expire

"On Sept. 13, the federal assault weapons ban will expire. I find it outrageous that the United States Congress decided to begin its recess without continuing this most important piece of legislation."

"The assault weapons ban has been effective in deterring crime, for crimes committed with assault weapons are down 66 percent since the ban was enacted. Moreover, a Department of Justice study has found that the Assault Weapons Ban has contributed to the reduction of the number of police officers killed with assault weapons."
-------

Actually it was a VPC interpretation of DOJ figures, not a "DOJ Study" that found the link. The DOJ and CDC have both said that the ban has had no discernable effect on crime.

... "... But there are still weapons that are not as destructive as the weapons of mass destruction and do not kill people in thousands, not even in hundreds at a time. They can at best kill a dozen people at a time and maim a score or more. But those weapons, though not comparable to the WMDs in their destructive power, still kill and maim people every minute, every day, every week -- relentlessly and without letup. Those are small arms. Bombs, grenades, pistols, revolvers, landmines, automatic rifles, etc. are the kind of weapons that kill a few people at a time, but they kill people with monotonous repetition. The number of victims of small weapons is increasing every passing day."
-------

KABA Note: This article fails to mention that governments in the 20th century disarmed and then killed over 169 million of their own citizens, making governments far more deadly than small arms or WMDs. 169 million in a century is 3.2 people per minute, every minute, of every hour, of every day, of every month, of every year, for one hundred years!

..."Yet it's also true that burning issues can disappear. You heard little last month in Boston, and you'll hear little this week in New York, about abortion and gun control, two of the most-talked-about issues of the 1990s. That's partly because Democrats think that gun control cost Al Gore crucial votes in 2000 and because Republicans think that abortion is not a winner for George W. Bush. But it's also because those Americans who have wanted to outlaw abortion and those who have wanted to outlaw guns -- two almost totally nonoverlapping groups -- have figured out that they are not going to get their way. We're going to have lots of abortions and lots of guns for years to come." ...

"If the President and the Congress do not act now, the 10-year-old Federal Assault Weapons Ban will expire on September 13. If that happens, these deadly killing machines, semi-automatic military style assault weapons, will return to the streets of America just as our children are returning to school in our community."

I see you've read Sarah Brady's talking points!

"Every three hours, a child or teen dies from gunfire in our country. And now semi-automatic weapons will be returned to our streets."
-------

Ooh, a new "fact"! I'll have to remember this one.

KABA Note: And when you pull 18 and 19 year olds out, it's one every 6 hours. Studies have shown that suicide is unaffected by gun control, so pull out suicides and it's one every 9 hours. The CDC has determined that criminal activity is unchanged by gun control, so pull out homicides and it's one every 62 hours. Still too many, but if the Eddie Eagle program was available in more schools, we could see those numbers drop even more.

A former Grand Isle police sergeant pleaded innocent today in state court in Jefferson Parish for allegedly killing a man during what was described as a traffic stop.

Twenty-four-year-old Keeland Cheramie Junior was indicted in July on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of 33-year-old Bret Lemoine on June second, 2003.

Cheramie and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office have said the shooting was justified and done in self-defense. They say Lemoine, of Belle Chasse, was trying to run down Cheramie when Cheramie shot him.

Cheramie has since resigned from the Grand Isle police force.

"To the people of western Sudan, Darfur, the region to the east, has always been considered a source of 'cheap labor and army recruits utilized particularly to stem the civil war in the South,' the prelates explained." ...

RCMP said the man was carrying a rifle when he walked into the lounge of the hotel in La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. He was disarmed but then went to his room where he was believed to have more weapons, police said.
