"An Alameda County Superior Court jury yesterday found that firearm manufacturer Beretta U.S.A. Corp. was not responsible for the tragic 1994 accidental shooting death of a 14-year-old boy. Kenzo Dix was killed when his friend played with a firearm that was left loaded and unlocked by an irresponsible parent. The jury deliberated only five hours before returning a verdict in favor of Beretta U.S.A. Corp., finding the pistol's design did not cause the accident."

"This was the third time the case had been tried. The lawsuit was filed in 1995 on behalf of the parents of Dix by lawyers from Handgun Control Inc. ..."

"Laws passed by 18 U.S. states requiring guns to be safely stored away from children have reduced the rate of teenage suicides, researchers said on Tuesday."

"The child access prevention laws implemented since 1989 may have prevented more than 300 suicides among 14- to 17-year-olds through 2001, according to the study by Daniel Webster of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore."

-------
"may have prevented" -- translated that means, we have found no direct causative link, but what the hell!

"First, and most telling, the reader told me 'there’s only one statistic that needs to be addressed,' that being that there are more guns in the US than in Japan, and more gun deaths in the US than in Japan. This kind of thinking makes one’s mind ripe for takeover by such hucksters as Michael Moore. There is never only one statistic that needs to be addressed."

"For example, there’s just one statistic that will tell you the US has both the world’s highest per-capita incidence of osteoporosis and the world’s highest per-capita intake of calcium. This one statistic would tell a naïve reader that calcium causes osteoporosis. Our doctors believe just the opposite, and they prescribe calcium to treat osteoporosis. ..."

"Once again, shameless gun-ban extremists are using the specter of terrorism to promote their anti-gun agenda. The gun-ban lobby and numerous anti-gun editorialists have all launched a coordinated attack on Attorney General John Ashcroft. This time, they object to him obeying the law."

"Specifically, Ashcroft's Department of Justice has stated that the records generated by the National Instant Check System that do not result in an individual being denied the ability to purchase a firearm cannot be used for anything other than what the Brady Act— which established NICS — allows."

"The gun extremists always ask why authorities don't enforce the firearms laws already on the books. It's a good question that ought to be directed to their patron saint, Attorney General John Ashcroft."

"As a result of Ashcroft's policy of keeping Brady Act background check records for only 24 hours, a new Justice Department review found that corrupt gun dealers had an easier time doctoring transactions and selling weapons to convicted felons. More than 7,000 people who should not have been able to buy guns did so anyway in 2002 and 2003, according to the review."

-------
Never mind that 97 percent of this relatively tiny number were retrieved with no harm done, and no evidence indicates that these guns were used in crimes.

That is why it is endorsed by scores of law enforcement organizations as well as trauma surgeons who deal on a daily basis with the damage done by these firearms." ...

"I noticed that this is written in the present tense, i.e., law enforcement officers and trauma surgeons are today, now, dealing with 'the damage done by these firearms.' "

"If doctors and law enforcement officers are indeed dealing with this, how can anyone believe that the ban is working in the first place? ..."

"In 1903, the War Department Appropriations Bill authorized the establishment of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice as well as the National Rifle and Pistol Trophy Matches, a concept strongly supported by President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid rifle shooter. The measure provided a great boost to civilian marksmanship training, an effort begun a generation earlier by the National Rifle Association."

"...All funds collected by the Corporation may be used only to support the official functions of the CMP. The DCM is a civilian employed by the Board of Directors and is the chief administrative officer for the daily operations of the CMP."

More "humane" devices to make you submit without killing you.

-------
"A few months from now, Peter Anthony Schlesinger hopes to zap a laser beam at a couple of chickens or other animals in a cage a few dozen yards away. If all goes as planned, the chickens will be frozen in mid-cluck, their leg and wing muscles paralyzed by an electrical charge created by the beam, even as their heart and lungs function normally."

"Among those most interested in the outcome will be officials at the Pentagon, who helped fund Schlesinger's work and are looking at this type of device to do a lot more than just zap the cluck out of a chicken."

We have successfully fought against efforts by the federal government to dictate how states should manage their wildlife programs, promoted programs to recapture sportsmen-generated funding for conservation programs and strongly opposed those who have sought to take away your Second Amendment rights."

"The antigun lobby used the frightful scenario of a father mistakenly shooting his daughter to underscore its point that South Africans simply revert to guns too easily -- that it is symptomatic of a gun-crazy society." ...

"What nobody can argue against is the urgent need for South African society to drastically reduce the number of arms it has in circulation, legal and illegal."

-------
Sure they can. Since you admit that "The country has an estimated 4 million unlicensed guns. These are mostly in the hands of criminals who use them in hijackings, robberies, gang warfare and such, routinely with dire results for their victims ..." it would be insane to disarm the law abiding as a crime reducing measure.

"While state law does not prohibit the discharge of weapons at the airport, council contends it does have the right to establish rules of conduct on city property. And, while some council members didn't see any harm in the skydivers using their down time to practice skeet and trap shooting, others thought it set a dangerous precedent and was not in keeping with the family atmosphere of the airport."

"It appears that Ms. Grape is under the impression that the federal assault weapons ban reduces domestic violence in Maine. Although she lists numerous shootings (a couple of which were domestic but most were not, and some were just firing a gun with no victim) including an all-encompassing 153 incidents in one paragraph, I can not find any reference in her editorial where an assault weapon was used in any domestic incident in Maine whatsoever." ...
