Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence: After Passage of 'Shoot First' Law, Getting Away With Murder

"Prosecutors here say a man who owed a drug dealer money invited him to his apartment, picked a fight with him, bashed him in the head five times with a lamp, and got off with manslaughter yesterday." ...

"'This was inevitable,' said Sarah Brady, honorary chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. 'When the first of these statutes passed in Florida, what we said was the inherent problem with the law was that it would empower thugs to kill. That is precisely why the people of Kentucky will have James Adam Clem back on the street sooner than he should be back on the street.'" ...
-------

KABA Note: So because despicable people claim to act in self-defense, Sarah would deny self-defense claims to all? This sounds exactly like her rationale for wanting to ban guns.

Silly Crime Summit Take II (BFA)

"A Crime Summit planned for August 30th in Washington D.C. is expected to attract law enforcement and elected officials from more than a dozen cities. The goal of the meeting is to discuss the increase in crime during 2005. One thing you can take to the bank is that the participants will blame guns for the increase in crime - they always do."

"It seems to be epidemic among law enforcement agency bureaucrats to blame guns, regardless of the mounds of evidence to the contrary. As usual, the establishment media falls on their every word and holds them up as experts on the issue of gun control. The problem is they have a vested interest in saying the problems that cause crime are out of their control." ...

"BLINDLY REACHING bare hands into dark, tight corners that likely haven't been disturbed in decades can earn you a ticket to an emergency room with an appendage throbbing from the venom of a brown recluse or black widow spider."

"Still, that's where the guns were. Upon the passing of her elderly aunt, a neighbor asked me to look at several aged firearms belonging to her late uncle. I gingerly reached into the 8-inch nook (or maybe it was a cranny) between the washer and the wall, just below a coat rack, and removed the stashed shooting irons."

"It was almost like reaching into a time capsule, or a box of chocolates--as Forrest Gump noted, you never know what you're going to get, but each piece may be a morsel to be savored." ...

Shotgun makeover

"When considering a firearm for self-defense or home protection, most people think about handguns. While handguns do have a role to play in personal protection, most notably conceal/carry where legal, the majority of experts you ask will tell you the best choice for defending home and property is a shotgun."

"Two primary reasons to consider a shotgun as a defensive firearm are safety and effectiveness. Handgun bullets penetrate walls with sufficient retained energy to harm a person in an adjacent room, or even an adjacent residence. The bulk of a shotgun blast's energy is expended in the target or wall material, minimizing the danger to others." ...

"Caddo Parish District Attorney Paul Carmouche says a Shreveport business owner was justified in shooting and killing a burglar he caught in his business last month."

"The district attorney's office reviewed the shooting and determined no charges should be filed against 74-year-old Dudley Hay."

"Hay went to his business in the middle of the night after a burglar alarm alerted him to trouble at the tax-service and gun-cleaning and repair shop located next door to his house."

"Hay got a gun and went to investigate on his own and found a man hiding in a bathtub. Hay said 19-year-old Eric Bryant of Shreveport stood up and confronted him, so he fired one shot."

"Louisiana's shoot-the-burglar law allows property owners to defend themselves." ...

"Not far from Fenway Park in Boston and visible from some of the busiest highways on the East Coast is a 252-foot-long, 20-foot-high billboard with a message: 'Stop Traffic: Background Checks Prevent Crime,' alongside enormous silhouettes of handguns. The accused? In equally large letters: Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont."

"Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, city police leaders and a group called Stop Handgun Violence unveiled the billboard's message to raise public support to change federal law so background checks would be required for private handgun sales. Federal law requires background checks only on purchases from licensed firearms dealers -- primarily gun stores." ...

"In another effort to keep guns off city streets, Yonkers Mayor Philip Amicone Thursday announced a gun amnesty buy back program, through which anyone can anonymously turn in a firearm for cash at designated sites throughout the city with no questions asked by law enforcement." ...

"'We don’t want to know your name. We don’t want to take your picture. We don’t even want to know where you got it. All we want is to get as many guns as we can off the streets as we can,' said Amicone, who has stepped up the city’s efforts to combat the influx of illegal guns. 'I want to stress, this is a completely anonymous program. If you have a gun in the house or if there’s a gun you can get to before a child or a criminal can, bring it in and we will give you cash, absolutely no questions asked.'" ...

"The testimony taken by the Judiciary Committee at Philadelphia's City Hall, the first of four stops statewide, comes as the city's homicide total continues to soar."

"There was extensive discussion at Tuesday night's Waymart Council meeting over the plight of a 14 year old girl who - according to a report from District Attorney Michael Lehutsky- was allegedly sexually molested by a man who visited the Gravity Planes Apartments in Waymart, last Thursday evening."

"Kathy Little, who is on the board of the Wayne County Housing Authority (which operates the apartment complex) but said she was speaking as a private citizen, raised concern that the State Police did not respond to the scene until 1-1/2 hours after residents first called them. State Police, as it is reported further in this story, said the response was 50 minutes." ...

"The no-questions-asked buyback of guns has generated an overwhelming response from residents, but city police are worried about running out of money to pay for the weapons."

"Two days into the buyback, 250 firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, have been turned in, police said."

"'The response definitely exceeded our expectations so far,' police spokesman James Tate told The Detroit News. 'It has been so strong we are running low on money, but we are going to continue through Sunday.'"

"Police have been paying $50 to $200 for the guns from a pot of $10,000."

"Outraged by reports of armed robberies on the National Mall, spikes in criminal assaults, and the brutal murder of a British citizen working as a political activist here, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has called on Congress and the Washington, DC, municipal government to abolish the District’s 30-year-old gun control regulations."

"Under the gun control ordinance adopted in 1976, handguns are banned and long guns must be dismantled."

"'For 30 years,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, 'we have witnessed the cruel hoax of restrictive gun laws in our nation's capitol. The insanity of gun control is revealed in the murder, rape, assault and robbery statistics that make the District of Columbia the crime capital of America.'" ...

"Homicide rates in the United States, after peaking at about 11 per 100,000 in the early 1990s, have tapered off to about 6 per 100,000. Bear in mind, of course, that there are a few little 'anomalies,' to wit: the homicide rate for Washington, D.C., is about 45.8 per 100,000. Our nation's capital is roughly on a par with that haven of peace and tranquility, that same El Salvador mentioned above." ...

"No offense to the author of the column 'Cincinnati should ban handguns' (July 27), but Robert B. Newman's arguments make little sense. Banning handguns, while not only unconstitutional, is highly impractical. It is a criminal's dream. The fewer people who have guns, the fewer can defend themselves when attacked ..."

"Newman argues that getting into a gunfight makes you more vulnerable. Well, I'd feel a lot better bringing a gun to a gunfight rather than a fist. ..."

"But let's suppose that the city organizes a giant handgun buy-back program, and sympathetic gun owners decide to hand over their guns for cash. Who's going to trade in their guns? Is an armed criminal going to turn in his gun if it's the means to his/her ends? No." ...

"As the sound of gunfire grew louder upon entering the shooting range, the fear of the guns themselves evolved more into an interest into their power and stigma. The range prides itself on its pledge to safety, and after taking the written safety test that every shooter must pass before crossing through its doors, the idea of shooting a gun became less frightening and more intriguing."

"Guns are scary because they can kill, but they aren't so scary when responsibly practiced as a hobby; the shooting that is, not the killing. But people own guns for other reasons; be it a stress-release mechanism, a hobby or a mode of self-defense as granted to every American in the U.S. Constitution." ...

"The ardent shooting enthusiast was in town for a show at The Blue Note last night. Yesterday afternoon, he stopped by MidwayUSA's 100,000-square foot distribution center ... home to more than 75,000 shooting, reloading, gunsmithing, hunting and outdoor products."

"The silent, dusty shooting range on Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow could start ringing with the explosive sounds of M16A2 service rifles and M9 Berettas being employed once again. It is these weapons that are going to be used to send screaming rounds of death down range, and get Marines and Marine Corps police officers tactically proficient with firearms."
