Is S. 397 a Trojan Horse? (JPFO)

"There's been minor grumbling about the 'safety lock' provisions in the proposed legislation, but otherwise S. 397 has had overwhelming support."

"Just about the time we were wondering why even some usually gun-unfriendly senators like Herb Kohl (D-WI) were in favor of this bill, an alert Congresswatcher contacted us with a warning."

"'The only thing I see that's good about the bill,' this sharp-eyed observer wrote, 'is that it hasn't become law.'"

"After taking a closer look, we agree."

"As our correspondent pointed out, the real problem lies in Sec. 6 'Armor Piercing Ammunition.'" ...

"The most commonly heard complaint about the National Rifle Association is that it's run by extremists who are militantly opposed to all forms of gun control and do not represent the views of the average gun owner. The second most common complaint is that the NRA is a namby-pamby, inside-the-Beltway lobby that readily compromises principle for political advantage."

"There is some truth to both of these seemingly contradictory portraits. The NRA's single-minded determination to defend its own understanding of the right to keep and bear arms can lead it to chip away at other pillars of a free society." ...

"What is more important than the war in Iraq? The National Rifle Association has Congress so intimidated that the Senate dropped consideration of a $491 billion defense-spending bill to bring up a measure immunizing gun manufacturers and dealers from lawsuits."

"The Republican leadership jumped the NRA's pet bill to the top of the agenda — rewarding the gun lobby for its support in 2004. But Democrats shared in the pandering, with 14 of them helping to pass the measure 65-31. Florida Sens. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, and Mel Martinez, a Republican, both voted for the bill. And if states want to hold gun makers to a higher standard? However much the GOP claims to protect states' rights, it holds the NRA's power in higher regard." ...

"If I were an industry, I would hire lobbyists and hand out lots and lots of campaign money to politicians. Then, I would persuade them to pass a law to keep people from suing me."

"If I were really good at this, the law would force judges to toss out lawsuits already filed against me, no matter how worthy, no matter which court."

"First, I would blame those greedy plaintiffs' lawyers for trying to bleed good industries like me dry. I would point to the craziest lawsuits I could find (is the McDonald's hot coffee case overused?) to distract people from the solid cases, the ones filed because my carelessness did hurt people."

"It was a cynical strategy, but one that is about to end. A shift in political winds has changed the dynamic. A gain of four seats in the U.S. Senate by Republicans, and the realization by Democrats that their incessant anti-Second Amendment viewpoints have a political cost, resulted in a 65-31 vote last week in favor of a National Rifle Association-backed bill that would largely forbid lawsuits against gun-makers and dealers when guns they produce or sell are used illegally." ...

Firearms education is on a dangerous decline in large part due to the disinformation published by the media and Hollywood. "It was only a matter of time. The National Rifle Association thinks every employer in America should be required by law to allow workers to bring guns into the workplace, and the group’s leader announced this week it will work to get state laws passed to ensure it. It doesn’t matter if there are day care centers in the office, or hazardous materials: Workers, the group says, should have a Constitutional right to be armed. FULL TEXT BELOW:

The state of Minnesota is being dragged back into court because our legislators and governor cared more about serving a narrow interest group than they did about respecting religious freedom when they reinstated concealed-carry.

Lawmakers were told that if religious institutions' concerns weren't addressed another lawsuit was inevitable. But they chose to reject common-sense amendments that would have rectified the problem. They let their fear of the gun lobby prevail.

Minnesotans shouldn't be surprised that we have another expensive legal battle on our hands; it was our elected officials' choice.
