Although mass shootings account for a fraction of gun deaths in America and gun homicides are at historic lows, the terroristic nature of these crimes make them especially traumatic and destructive. The murderers, predominately young white men and loners with hateful, but often confused, ideologies, can strike anywhere. And that puts them everywhere.

Two days after a mass shooting left 22 people dead at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, Walmart says it's not going to stop selling guns, though some gun control advocates are calling on it to do so. ‘’There’s been no change in policy,' Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove said, adding that the retailer has been focused on caring for customers and employees in the El Paso community. "It's horrible ... what’s happened.’’

Between the recent high-profile mass shootings in California, Texas and Ohio, student walkouts and a fierce political debate between gun-rights groups and gun-control advocates, hardly a week goes by when guns aren’t in the news. But in America, guns are more than just a hot political topic — they’re also very big business and a large employer across all 50 states.

From Gilroy to El Paso to Dayton, this week of death and mass shooting has reminded our country of its greatest failures. Americans have failed to act decisively about access to guns. Our legislators have neglected to reinstate gun violence as an area of study and statistics. And our society has wavered on confronting the white supremacy that reportedly motivated these latest shooters. But our greatest failure has been the lack of understanding of the connections between these deficiencies.

NPR's Alina Selyukh reports.

.303 British ammunition originated as a black powder cartridge, and was first employed by the British military in 1888. The Lee-Metford rifle, later known as the Lee-Enfield rifle, was the first rifle chambered for the .303 British, which eventually advanced from being a black powder cartridge to using cordite, a smokeless powder. In over 70 years of service to the Commonwealth, the .303 British saw action in the Boer War, the Turkish War of Independence and both world wars.

Twenty-nine people were killed in two mass shootings in America this weekend: 20 slain at a Wal-Mart in El Paso, Texas, and 9 in Dayton, Ohio, along with dozens of others injured by gunfire.

That same stretch of time saw at least nine people shot in Detroit, three of them fatally, in shootings scattered through the city.

In the aftermath of the violence, activists told different stories about gun ownership and what it represents.

Andrew Patrick, a spokesman for the Washington, D.C.-based Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, founded in 1974, said the mass shootings are part of a "public health crisis" in America concerning gun violence.

MI: Understanding Michigan's Gun Laws -- Not as Straightforward as You Might Think

One thing is clear: Michigan's gun laws are confusing.

There are guidelines with exceptions upon exceptions, laws about different types of guns, contradicting laws about where guns can and can't be carried, and there was even proposed legislation that, if passed, would have officially allowed people to legally carry concealed guns inside schools, churches and other pistol-free zones.

That's right: While it's not legal for someone to carry a concealed weapon inside a school in Michigan, the law does not prohibit a person who has a concealed pistol license (CPL) to carry a weapon out in the open inside a school.

In recent years I've warmed to the Second Amendment. I never even fired a gun until I was well into my 40s, but as I became more familiar with them I came to see the value of a firearm for personal defense. And I realized that guns themselves — even those scary "assault weapons" — aren't to blame for mass shootings or other mayhem. They're just the tool used to express the hate, fury, resentment and despondency of the shooter.

A familiar quote, often attributed to Winston Churchill and later appropriated by the leftist, radical, Saul Alinsky goes, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” Whoever originally coined the concept, the anti-Second Amendment crowd is certainly taking it to heart. In the last 48 hours, we have seen two horrific mass shootings. The blame game has ensued. Yet, lost in the impending storm of side taking is the recognition of the actual world we live in, and any ultimately fruitless assault on Americans' Second Amendment freedoms plainly ignores reality.

The man who fatally shot nearly two dozen people at an El Paso Walmart on Saturday, alleged to be a right-wing extremist, and the man who shot and killed nine people only hours later in a downtown area of Dayton, Ohio, both unleashed their savage attacks thanks to military-style rifles. Just as culpable for the carnage, however, were the large-capacity magazines that enabled these shooters to discharge many rounds of ammunition without reloading.

"I generally oppose gun control, wrote Donald Trump in his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, “but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.” It was an uncontroversial view for a freewheeling New Yorker, who moved in the same circles as Bill and Hillary Clinton, and liked to speak his mind.

New York lawmakers are pushing for stronger gun laws across the country following mass shootings in Texas and Ohio this weekend. “We’ve lost more Americans in these two instances that took place in the last 24 hours in Dayton and El Paso than were lost in Afghanistan in 2017 and 2018 combined,” said Senator Chuck Schumer (D. - NY).
