... "... From Birmingham forward, every peaceful nonviolent protest carried the threat of black violence. The Birmingham riots marked the end of nonviolence and the advent of a movement characterized by both lawful mass protest and defensive violence.' -- Deacons for Defense, Lance Hill, UNC Press, 2004, pp. 259-260.

"When I came to Alabama in 1985, I was lucky that I landed a job at Clarklift of Alabama in Birmingham. I was lucky because I got to work the parts counter with two very different men -- men who taught me fundamental truths along with a little bit of history about what it meant to be southern, Alabamian, white -- and from Birmingham." ...

Supreme Defiance: D.C. City Council Still Trying to Shred Second Amendment

"After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the District of Columbia's ban on firearms was unconstitutional, the City Council approved new firearms legislation that allows residents to apply for handgun permits. This is the normal course of business a governmental body takes when the Supreme Court determines whatever it was doing was unconstitutional. That is unless it's the D.C. City Council that's acting unconstitutional."

"The [AP] headline was 'D.C. will accept gun-permit applications.' But the real headline should have been, 'D.C. defies Supreme Court ruling on handguns.' That's because the City Council refuses to follow the ruling of the court concerning the lawful possession and use of handguns within its city limits." ...

"Last week police confiscated a small arsenal of illegal guns, ammunition and other assorted weapons from the Marstons Mills home of Kenneth Webster. On July 1 police also removed several guns and knives that had been on his person and in his car. In total, more than 50 weapons were taken from Webster including a sawed-off shotgun, an M14 automatic rifle and a sniper rifle."

"When he was arrested on July 1 Webster reportedly told police that he had a constitutional right to own those guns. If that sounds scary, here's something scarier. There are a lot of people out there who agree with him." ...

"For those American citizens who reside in congested crime-ridden urban areas ... this recent ruling brings a heightened concern about personal safety. But this ruling also brings a heightened concern about personal safety for those of us who rely on hate-crimes laws to protect us from the bigoted actions by our fellow citizens."

"'Does [Libertarian Party presidential candidate] Bob Barr embrace the 2nd Amendment?', libertarian blog LewRockwell.com (LRC) asked last month. Bob Barr's long record as a gun rights champion has rarely been questioned even by his critics ..." ...

"One hint on U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie's political ideology comes from his 1995 campaign for the State Assembly, when he attacked two other candidates ... for supporting a repeal of the ban on assault weapons. A reader sent PolitickerNJ.com a copy of the mailer from that campaign after Matt Friedman's story on conservatives wanting to know where the federal prosecutor stands on some state issues."

"Christie's position won't hurt him as a general election candidate in a state where polls over the last decade have constistently demonstrated support for an assault weapons ban. His exposure is in the GOP primary against former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, a staunch advocate of the Second Amendment." ...

"Questions from aldermen about proposed amendments to the City's weapons ordinance led to postponement of the vote to amend the ordinance, scheduled for the July 28 City Council meeting, until at least the Aug. 11 meeting."

"The Council directed the City's law department to draft an ordinance that would comply with the recent U.S. Supreme Court Decision Heller v. District of Columbia, which held that Washington, D.C.'s ban on the private possession of handguns was unconstitutional. "Those are a couple of the changes members of a Winnebago County subcommittee suggested Tuesday night as they draft a proposed county law that would allow Winnebago County residents to carry firearms."

"'We're talking about a concealed carry law,' said Winnebago County Board member John Sweeney, R-14, stressing the word 'concealed.'"

"Your July 28 editorial, 'The Right to Own Guns' not only shows your bias but your complete lack of knowing or agreeing with the Constitution as it is written. Your whole editorial is full of what Dr. Phil of TV fame would call, 'lies of omission.'"

"For instance, you claim this new decision by the Supreme Court contradicts nearly 70 years of precedent linking that right to the amendment's reference to 'A well-regulated militia.' The facts are that in our entire history of over 230 years, there are only six Supreme Court decisions on the Second Amendment. A state corrections officer was arrested Tuesday on charges alleging he sexually assaulted a woman. Several weapons, including an "inert" grenade, were removed from the officer's apartment following his arrest, police said.

Police said they launched an investigation of the corrections officer, 52-year-old Dominick Amantia, after a 29-year-old woman contacted them and said she was sexually assaulted by Amantia in his apartment in the 100 block of Dye Street about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Police withheld the woman's name due to the nature of the alleged crime.

"During the investigation, Detective Gregory Hollo learned that the suspect had a gun, knives and a grenade inside his apartment," police said in a news release.
