Former U.S. Rep. Glenn Poshard will not make another run for the governor's office in 2002.

Poshard issued a short statement Sunday night announcing he will not seek the Democratic party's nomination for the state's highest office. In 1998 he lost a tough battle against Republican George Ryan, and many had been urging him to try again.

~~Poshard, a down-state Democrat, is more pro-gun than most upstate Republicans. This is sad news.

John Horstman set out on a six-hour bicycle ride July 24. As he rolled east across the Illinois Prairie Path bridge near West Chicago, a DuPage County sheriff's officer stopped him. Now, Horstman is embarking on a legal and political odyssey that may be the test case for an ambiguous clause in the state's gun-control law.

~~What part of "unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm shipping box, or other container" is ambiguous? How can this be a test case when IL v. Brunner already decided it?

"I sincerely and deeply hope that the direst and darkest fears of the anti-gun leagues are realized and implemented: that all unconstitutional gun laws are repealed. Yes, our right to express intellectual ideas as protected by the First Amendment is crucial to a free culture. That first mentioned right doesn't mean squat, however, if you don't have the muscle to defend it against violators. That's the role of the Second Amendment: to guarantee a right that is second to none." --Russel Madden
