Get a gun, stop a terrorist?

"Chris Bird, a journalist and handgun expert, might really believe everything he's saying. On the other hand, maybe he just wants to sell a few books."

"... Now, he has written a book on how to choose, carry and shoot a gun in self-defense."

"That's all fine and well, until you get to one of his premises. Bird says that for decades, Americans have been 'brainwashed' into a passive mentality that made them easy targets for miscreants of every stripe. But thanks to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the scales have fallen from our eyes."

"'We learned,' Bird says, 'that the government and the professionals could not protect us.'"

"If his remark can be taken at face value, it's almost astonishing in its naiveté." ...

"It has come to my attention that some well-meaning pro-gun activists have expressed concern about an amendment on armor-piercing ammunition that was added to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (S. 397) during consideration of the measure on the Senate floor. Those concerns are unwarranted and many of the assumptions and interpretations concerning that provision are just plain wrong."

"The amendment was offered this year (as it was in 2004) by pro-gun Senators in what proved to be a successful attempt to defeat Senator Edward Kennedy's amendment that would have banned all center-fire rifle ammunition by labeling same as 'armor-piercing' ..." ...

"Just as there are no atheists in the foxholes, there are no gun control advocates locked in their apartments with a large, menacing burglar attempting to batter his way in."

"That was Sandra Froman’s experience nearly two decades ago. Her shouting, banging on the wall and even cranking the stereo to 11 didn’t scare off the would-be intruder, but he eventually ... abandoned his effort to enter her domicile."

"Still, the minutes of sheer terror left an impression on the San Mateo-born and raised Froman, and it would prove to be a life-altering moment."

"'The next day, I went to the gun store. ...' said Froman, who became the National Rifle Association’s first Jewish (and second female) president earlier this year." ...

Kelo's Implications Are Horrendous

"Readers' questions have prompted me to examine further the Supreme Court's recent Kelo decision. Kelo is even worse than the calamity I declared it to be."

"Kelo does not mean the end of private property per se, but it does mean the end of anyone's secure possession, be the owner an individual or a corporation. To the extent that Americans still possess constitutional rights, Kelo could mean their end, as well." ...

"Indeed, as one astute reader noted, Kelo's public benefit concept of eminent domain could be used to condemn privately owned firearms. The Second Amendment would still be there. We would have a right to firearms in the abstract just as we have a right to property in the abstract, but every specific right can be condemned." ...

"There is something about Toronto’s mayor, David Miller, which brings out the Bugs Bunny in me. Whenever I see Miller on television, uttering his platitudes and articulating his inanities, I just shake my head and say, 'What a maroon!'"

"Anyway, it is not the banalities that he regularly utters that caught my attention. He has managed to pin down the reason why we have all these shootings and gun deaths in Toronto. Are you ready for it? It’s the Americans." ...

"One thing is for certain. Whichever guns are being used, the shooters are 100% Canadian." ...

"Dozens of residents in the Gaza settlement of Ganei Tal handed over their weapons Monday to local security officials, who in turn returned them to the IDF."

"Shlomo Vasertil, one of those who handed over their weapons, told Ynet this was a sad day for him."

"'It’s a day where a law abiding citizen who used the weapon to protect himself is asked by the State of Israel to return it,' he said" ...

Poster's note: The guns being handed in are full-auto military M-16s lent by the army. Most of these folks get to keep their licensed handguns. More surprisingly, most Israelis cannot own a gun of any kind.

"Should the penalty for using a firearm illegally in Henrico County be more severe than a maximum fine of $250? Should it be illegal to fire a gun on any piece of land smaller than an acre?"

"Some members of the county's Board of Supervisors think so, and they've asked the Henrico's county attorney to study the county's existing firearms ordinance and deliver a briefing during their Aug. 9 work session."

"The battle over whether Wisconsin should allow people to carry concealed weapons is taking on a new fight. Local police chiefs are speaking out against the proposal."

"Imagine if Wisconsin allowed you to carry a concealed weapon. Would you put it under your jacket? Maybe inside your purse? You don't know? Neither do police officers, which is exactly why they're opposed to the idea."

'I think this is an additional danger to my officers and I believe it will be an additional danger to the City of Green Bay,' says Chief Craig Van Schyndle with the Green Bay Police Department." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Hoping to get more guns off the streets of New Orleans, the annual gun buy-back program is changing locations this year.

On Aug. 27, the program will move from Mid City to St. Bernard Avenue -- an area that has seen an increase in gun violence.

In the past six years, the program has collected thousands of guns by offering cash with no questions asked.

With restrictions in place at gun stores, many of the guns are purchased on the street. The gun buy-back aims to "out-price" the street transactions by offering $50 for guns and $75 for assault weapons.

The program's coordinators also are passing out free gunlocks.

"The group released its report just one week before Taser International, the maker of the weapon, sent out a training bulletin warning that multiple shocks with the stun gun could impair breathing and possibly lead to death."
