SAF Condemns ABC News Fraud in Report on Sunset of "Assault Weapons" Law

BELLEVUE, WA -- "The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) today called on ABC News anchor Peter Jennings and correspondent Bill Redeker to admit the network distorted fact during a report on the end of the so-called “assault weapons” ban that aired Wednesday evening, Sept. 8."

"During that segment, video footage from the North Hollywood bank robbery shootout in March 1997 showed the robbers firing full-automatic weapons, suggesting that this type of firearm will be legal when the ban expires at midnight Sept. 13. These guns had been illegally modified, yet ABC News left the impression that such rifles will be available to the general public." ...

Whiny gun banner -- a sore loser on the gun ban renewal -- compares flash suppressors to grenade launchers

"For obvious reasons, federal law bans the sale of semi-automatic rifles with flash-suppressors. Snipers can put flash suppressors on their rifles to keep from being seen as they squeeze off rounds from their hideaways. For similar reasons, federal law bans ammunition clips that hold more than 10 bullets. In the hands of a mass killer, the more bullets that can be fired before reloading, the more people might die. These are commonsense restrictions. They no more need justifying than the federal ban on grenade launchers that can be attached to rifle barrels. But Monday morning, all these restrictions will be lifted."

Sore Loser Sen. Feinstein Criticizes Bush Silence On Assault Weapons Ban

WASHINGTON -- "Days before a ban on assault weapons is set to expire, Sen. Dianne Feinstein accused President Bush of staying silent on the issue because he wants the endorsement of the powerful National Rifle Association."

" 'The president quietly awaits Sept. 13 and hopes that after he lets the ban expire, he can once again receive the endorsement of the NRA, because the NRA is not going to make their endorsement until the ban expires,' Feinstein, D-Calif., said Wednesday on the Senate floor."

"Bush has said in the past that he supports renewing the ban that Feinstein authored 10 years ago. But he has not pushed congressional Republicans on the issue, and House GOP leaders never brought it up for a vote." ...

Iowa County Sheriff's justification for supporting renewal of useless gun ban reveals plenty about his character

"A federal ban on semi-automatic firearms is set to expire in five days. And that would mean people could legally carry the weapons on the streets of eastern Iowa and across the country."

"While law officers across the country and in eastern Iowa say a ban is necessary. Linn County Sheriff Don Zeller told TV9, 'To protect them if we're out manned and out gunned then we're already at a disadvantage. When you have drug dealers and gang members if they have access to these types of weapons then the encounters we make will be that much more dangerous.' "

QUESTIONS FOR THE SHERIFF:

Does that mean that The People should be banned from being able to own semi-auto handguns, too? After all, most of your deputies carry semi-autos. Should The People only be allowed to own single shot arms? Would you have us revert to muskets? Or would you ban those too? And since you mention "protect them," are you implying that you, as a sworn law enforcement officer, have a duty to protect The People? If so, would you care to put that in writing?

"Similarly, the criminological premises of the anti-gun movement have collapsed in the face of serious social science. For better than three decades the American public has been solemnly assured that peaceable citizens who possess guns for self-defense are disasters in waiting."

"Yet the criminological literature provides little support for this caricature of gun owners. Instead, careful research has discovered an incredibly high amount of firearms' being responsibly used in self-defense...Gary Kleck and others indicate between two and three million cases of self-defense per year. Overwhelmingly these incidents involve not firing the weapon at the attacker, but simply brandishing it and thereby causing the attacker's withdrawal."

"A decade-old ban on assault weapons is expected to expire Monday, rekindling a nationwide debate about whether inaction by an election-year Congress will put more military-style rifles in the streets."

"The ban's expiration drew harsh criticism Wednesday from law enforcement officials and members of Congress at events on Capitol Hill and in the Twin Cities."

"Those who want to end the ban, which forbids the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons and blocks gun manufacturers from making certain weapons, say it hasn't had much of an effect on decreasing gun crime."

"'It may make for good politics, but the ban has done little to make Minnesota families safer,' said Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn." ...

"Face it, if the NRA had its way, people would be able to own machine guns."

NOTE: In most areas of the country, people can own machineguns. They just have to jump through lots of hoops and have lots of disposable income.

"And the more fanatical NRA members would be yammering about how the 2nd Amendment allows it." ...

"Contrary to popular belief, I support the 2nd Amendment."

"What I don't support is the NRA's iron-fisted labeling of every reasonable effort to curb gun violence as a diabolical plot to take guns away from law-abiding citizens." ...

"Washington is about to quietly do the unthinkable: It's going to allow the return of assault weapons to the nation's streets. All it takes is for President George W. Bush and Republican House leaders to do nothing, a course they, sadly, seem perfectly willing to take."

KABA NOTE: To Bush's credit, this complainer is right: he's done little to push the ban and has actually surely helped it sunset.

"In the summer of 1994, after her husband was murdered and her son was grievously injured on the Long Island Rail Road by a gunman wielding a semi-automatic pistol, Carolyn McCarthy was conducting a one-woman crusade against assault weapons. Trained as a nurse, she was suddenly a public figure. She lobbied in Albany for a state assault-weapons ban, appeared in anti-gun commercials with Gov. Mario Cuomo and roamed the halls of Congress, corralling legislators to urge them to vote for President Bill Clinton's assault-weapons ban."

The Bush political operation has an efficient muzzle: the sound of presidential silence."

The families of eight D.C. sniper victims reached two settlements totaling $2.5 million yesterday with the dealer and manufacturer of the rifle used in the shooting spree that left Washington, D.C.-area residents afraid to leave their homes in the fall of 2002.
Lawyers for the families call the settlements "landmark."

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which has filed a number of gun suits, said this is the first time a gun manufacturer has agreed to pay a settlement to victims.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The supposed quietude of a good mans allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside...Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them... — Thomas Paine, I Writings of Thomas Paine at 56 (1894).
