Sept. 14 will mark the official formation of a Richmond chapter of the Libertarian Party. A group of local citizens will hold an open meeting at the Village Café on Sunday at 1:00. The forming of this party is an offshoot of the Patrick Henry Supper Club and several members are active with the State Central Committee of the Libertarian Party.

The Libertarian Party has been active in Richmonds political scene taking on a number of issues concerning taxes, marijuana legislation, gun control and the Patriot Act.

New Interpol international crime statistics revealed, rather surprisingly, that Sweden, our laid-back, neutral, furniture-loving neighbour, where slapping a child is a criminal offence, tops the European crime league in murder, serious assaults and robberies, and even surpasses the USA in violent crime. The murder rate in Sweden is three times as high as Denmark, four times as high as Norway, and twice as high as in the USA. In addition, Sweden has twice as many sex crimes and robberies as this country and 25 times as many violent assaults. A Swedish National Crime Agency criminologist dismissed the Interpol figures as 'exaggerated.' 'They claim that there were 900 murders here in 2001, but that also included suicides which have somehow ended up in the murder column. To say we have a higher murder rate than the USA is ridiculous,' he said.

A 27-year-old Orem man who entered a Provo Greyhound bus station Thursday and demanded money got quite a surprise. After handing the clerk a note demanding money, the clerk -- a concealed weapons permit holder -- took the robbery suspect into custody at gunpoint, Provo police say. A customer entering the Greyhound station at 124 N. 300 West called police at the clerk's request. The man was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery and public intoxication.
