"Ex-FBI agent John Connolly Jr.'s attorneys begged a federal judge yesterday for a lenient sentence, delivering 200 letters from retired agents, priests, relatives and business associates vouching for his character."

"The unprecedented outpouring of support for the convicted racketeer facing sentencing on Monday promotes a glowing portrait of a selfless crime fighter now persecuted by a Justice Department."

"In a motion made public yesterday, Connolly's attorneys asked Tauro to reconsider his ruling earlier this week signifying a plan to give the agent 8-10 years in prison for racketeering with James 'Whitey' Bulger."

"The judge also got a letter yesterday from a retired Boston police sergeant whom Connolly denigrated in a 1997 phony letter he mailed on police stationery to a federal judge."

"Jurors convicted Connolly of sending the letter on behalf of Stephen 'The Rifleman' Flemmi."

"Frank Dewan alleged other instances of Connolly slandering cops and asked Tauro to lock him up Monday."

" 'To protect his illegal relationship, he caused me a great deal of embarrassment and humiliation, as well as denigrating the men and women of the Boston Police Department,' Dewan wrote."

"The Boston Police Patrolmen's Assocation yesterday called for Commissioner Paul F. Evans to resign, saying his planned restrictions on the use of deadly force - outlined after the fourth fatal police shooting this year - are 'deadly and irresponsible' and could lead to 'officers killed in the line of duty.' "

"In a statement posted on its Web site, the union said Evans is 'unfit to lead this department' because he wants to ban officers from shooting at moving vehicles. Evans announced the changes on Monday, a day after an officer shooting at a fleeing car killed a 25-year-old Dorchester woman who was riding in the back seat."

"Former FBI agent H. Paul Rico 'assisted, condoned, participated and caused the death' of William Bennett two days before Christmas in 1967, charges the suit filed in U.S. District Court."

"The lawsuit joins 13 other claims totaling $1.9 billion against the government over the Boston FBI's handling of criminal informants dating back 40 years."

ORIGINAL TITLE: "Mugging for the cops"
-------
"In Virginia Beach, Va., police started a digital manhunt for criminals this week by pairing surveillance cameras with new identification technology."

"It is the second U.S. city to hunt for fugitives by scanning public streets while software compares images of pedestrians captured on camera to digital versions of police photos."

"Surveillance cameras have long been used on private property, from banks to airports, and their use in public spaces such as the National Mall is becoming more common."

"Police in Virginia Beach and Tampa, Fla., the other city where this technology is used, see the cameras as a strong deterrent to criminals. But privacy advocates say combining surveillance devices with software to hunt for people walking in public places marks the erosion of freedom because it puts scores of innocent people in a digital lineup."

UK: Government 'manipulating statistics on street crime'

"The Government was accused last night of 'statistical manipulation' to back up Tony Blair's pledge to make Britain's streets safer."

"Figures from the 10 police force areas with the worst robbery records showed there were 70 fewer mugging victims each day in England and Wales last month compared to April."

"However, Opposition MPs accused the Home Office of using selective statistics to make sure Mr Blair's pledge was met 'by hook or by crook'."

"No amount of playing with the figures will persuade the British public that street crime is anything like under control. Short-term fixes and statistical manipulation are not a substitute for a coherent long-term strategy to attack crime at its roots and get police visibly back on our streets." --Oliver Letwin, shadow home secretary

"Yesterday Mr Blunkett announced that street crime had been reduced by 14 per cent in the 10 predominantly urban forces where the problem has been the target of an unprecedented £67m police initiative."

"But no sooner had news emerged of what appeared to be a dramatic transformation than criminologists and other experts began to voice doubts about the picture being presented by the Government." ...

"Neighbourhood wardens will patrol Scotland's streets in a new approach to tackling crime in communities."

"The Scottish Executive said the wardens will provide a visible presence in deprived communities and will provide a new point of contact for local people."

"It has been pointed out that while the wardens' presence is intended to discourage nuisance crime, they will have no law enforcement powers."

Sounds like more targets for pickpockets and muggers.

It was born in noise and confusion and blood on April 19, 1775. It was born with a burst of gunfire, the smell of powder and the whistling of shot, and with the blood of patriots on Lexington Green, at Concord Bridge, and during that long, terrible aftermath on the road to Boston."

More proof that some people vote based solely on personl and selfish self-interests, even for the lowest of bottom feeders:
-------
"[Anti-gun New York Senator Chuck] Schumer reassured Foote and several other jean-clad farmers at the fair's dairy pavilion that a new milk price support program is coming soon. The program sends federal money to dairy farmers when the price of milk falls below a certain level."

"Schumer conversed knowledgeably about the support program, which he voted for, then moved on to a milk vending machine where he touted the idea of putting the milk dispensers in public schools instead of soda machines."

"The moms he encountered thought that was a good idea and Schumer was a good guy, but they were fuzzy on what he's actually done in Washington."

The nation's oldest continuously-operating airport in College Park, MD received a call Tuesday ordering them to close the airport immediately.

The order specifies absolutely NO FLIGHT OPERATIONS which means that if someone flies out of or into these airports they get to tango with the TSA or the Secret Service, depending on whose turn it is to violate someone's civil rights.

"Some of the illegal immigrants rounded up Monday as part of the crackdown at Bush Intercontinental Airport had resigned their airport job weeks or months earlier, officials confirmed Thursday."

"In addition to the 143 people indicted on charges of falsifying documents, the Immigration and Naturalization Service rounded up 49 people-- some of whom no longer worked at the airport -- on simple immigration violations."

"Civil libertarians say that news calls into question the government's claim it acted to ensure that terrorists do not have access to the airport."

" 'You're not protecting security at the airport by arresting people who no longer work at the airport,' said David A. Kahne, a local representative of the American Civil Liberties Union. Critics of the sweep, known as 'Operation Tarmac,' plan to hold a news conference this morning."

"INS spokeswoman Luisa Aquino said she could not say how many of those apprehended no longer worked at the airport, but that some had left after being forewarned of the crackdown."

BRIDGEPORT, WEST VIRGINIA -- "A Harrison-Marion Regional Airport worker was recently dismissed for firing a gun inside a building on airport property, the airport manager says."

"Jim Griffith said the maintenance worker discharged what he believes was a .22-caliber pistol inside an unsecured maintenance building late last week while three other workers were inside. Griffith said the man was apparently aiming his gun at a pop bottle target, and one shot hit a wall."

" "The reason I could dismiss him right there on the spot is because right in our employee policy it says, 'no unauthorized firearms on the airport,' " Griffith said Tuesday."

"The employee's identity and the number of times the gun was discharged were not immediately clear."

"Griffith said he did not report the incident to police or the public because he considered it a personnel issue, not a passenger-safety one."

"Airport workers sometimes use guns to keep runways free of wildlife such as ground hogs or deer, Griffith said, but added the Bridgeport airport has permits for such use."

"Lt. Roy Collins of the Bridgeport Police Department said firing a gun within city limits without special permission is illegal, and that such activity would normally result in a fine if no other illegal conduct was involved."

SEBASTOPOL -- "Federal agents Thursday raided a ranch on the outskirts of Sebastopol, carting away thousands of mature marijuana plants and arresting the owner of a Petaluma pot club."

"It was one of the largest marijuana seizures on the North Coast in recent memory."

"At least six people were being questioned, but only one had been arrested by late Thursday."

"Robert Schmidt, 51, owner of the Petaluma marijuana buyers club, was held on suspicion of assaulting a Drug Enforcement Administration agent."

"One agent, who insisted on anonymity, said Schmidt was arrested after he tried to strip another agent of his firearm."

"Schmidt had rented the six-acre property since March. His Petaluma club, Genesis 1:29, also was raided Thursday."

"A Chevrolet Blazer loaded with what one agent said were computer hard drives from the club drove up and parked beside the ranch house while agents were taking a lunch break from cutting down marijuana plants with chain saws."

"Crossbows and knives also were seized at the ranch, agents said."

"Neighbors said Schmidt was growing marijuana for Genesis and numerous other clubs around the Bay Area that sell marijuana for medical use."

"California voters approved an initiative in 1996 allowing medical use of marijuana with approval from a physician. But possession of marijuana remains a federal offense, and the Justice Department has stepped up enforcement since the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge last year."

One man climbed a scaffold to escape the aggressive cat while the other ran inside the cabin and slammed a sliding glass door in its face."

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- "A Lewistown man has been ordered to pay $5,800 in fines and replacement costs for killing a black bear, the first time a Pennsylvania judge has handed down the maximum penalty for the crime."

"C. David Vogt, 45, was sentenced Sept. 6 for illegally killing the bear on his property last April."

"Vogt had claimed he shot the bear in self defense, but Pennsylvania Game Commission officials said evidence showed there was no one outdoors at the time and that the bear was not in an aggressive posture."

"Vogt said Thursday that he planned to appeal, but said he could not comment further without first talking with his attorney."

"Mark Ternent, a bear biologist for the Game Commission, said the adult male bear weighed 630 pounds when it was killed and would have reached 700 pounds before denning in the fall."

" 'Less than 1 percent of the nearly 45,000 bears weighed in Pennsylvania in the last 20 years obtain that size,' Ternent said. 'The odds of legally harvesting a bear of this size are about one in 39,000.' "

"A police officer in Minnesota who thought he was using a stun gun to subdue a suspect mistakenly fired a bullet into the man's back, investigators say."

"The victim, Christofar Atak, is said to be in a 'fair condition' after the incident."

"Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson said investigation into the September 2 shooting found that Greg Siem thought he was holding a stun gun."

"The stun guns used by the police force are said to look like handguns. They use an electric shock to temporarily incapacitate a person."

"Atak, a refugee from civil war in Sudan, was drunk and acting violently at the time, police said."

" 'This family moved to get away from violence and they find themselves right back in it,' said Atak's lawyer, William L French."

"The police chief said he spoke with Atak to apologise and explain the findings of the investigation."

"He added Siem and a second officer, who had both been on leave since the shooting, can return to work."

MOSCOW (Reuters) - "Moscow expressed anger on Friday at a move by the United States, whose anti-terror campaign it has backed, to slap sanctions on three Russian arms producers."

"Russia's Foreign Ministry said Washington informed it last week that the arms suppliers -- producing a range of weapons from guns to helicopters -- had been put on a black list for striking deals with Libya, Syria and Sudan."

"The ministry said it had conveyed its protest to visiting U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton on Thursday."

" 'We talked about ways in which we could coordinate sales of conventional weapons to avoid the problem of sales...to state sponsors of terrorism,' he said. 'In the United States there is an absolute prohibition on such sales.' "

MIAMI -- "A retired Hialeah police officer was sentenced Thursday to more than 26 years in prison for setting up three robberies, one of them drug related, and beating hostages with a fellow officer."

"Orestes DeSoto, 46, was also sentenced to five years of supervised release on eight counts of federal robbery, narcotics and firearms charges."

"Suspended officer Cecilio Nunez, 39, was sentenced to more than 22 years in prison and supervised release on Wednesday on five similar federal charges."

"A federal judge ordered Nunez to pay $22,169.93 in restitution, U.S. Attorney Marcos Daniel Jimenez said."

"The two were arrested in October for the robberies, which were committed in little more than a month in early 2000."

"The investigation, nicknamed 'Bad Apple,' was organized by a task force of federal and state agents targeting corrupt officers. Hialeah police cooperated with the investigation."

"In the most extreme case, a restaurant manager was abducted, beaten, robbed and threatened with a gun by DeSoto, who thought the man doubled as a cocaine dealer."

"Investigators said the victim was stopped in a marked police car and handcuffed before a hood was placed over his head."

IN FAIRNESS...

Since cutting these guys' heads off and putting them on stakes outside their former police department would classify as 'cruel and unusual punishment', put them in the prison's general population and let inmates know they are cops and exactly what they did.

The peace officers who brought these vermin to justice deserve high praise and awards.

"Pigeons, squirrels and rats have a new threat in Raleigh - gun-toting business owners."

"The city has a new ordinance that allows commercial property owners to use a .22-caliber rifle to shoot the animals on their land. The ordinance already allowed property owners to shoot vermin in residential areas if they have a permit from the police chief and are older than 21."

"Otherwise it's illegal to shoot or discharge any air rifle, gun or pistol in the city limits unless it's part of a police course or at an enclosed firing range."

"The permits are good for 90 days and allow only firing of blanks or shot cartridges during daylight hours on weekdays. The city won't issue permits for property within 150 feet of a school or park. Between June 1, 2001, and April 30, 27 residents asked for permits."

AURORA, COLORADO — "A 50-year-old Aurora man who was shot by police and seriously injured has been cleared of a charge that he aimed his handgun at officers before the shooting."

"An Arapahoe County jury on Wednesday acquitted Jerry Norris of felony menacing, finding that Norris could not have pointed his gun at one of two Aurora policemen on July 26, 2001."

"Now Norris, who has described his life since the shooting as 'hell,' may seek compensation from Aurora police Officers Andrew Crowley and Adolpho Ramirez, who shot Norris twice."

" 'I presume we'll be filing a suit against the city of Aurora and the officers involved,' said Robert Dill, Norris' attorney."

"Prosecutor Phil Smith declined to comment on the case."

"The officers had responded to Norris' house on a 911 hang-up call but they had been mistakenly sent to his address because of a computer error in the police emergency system. Norris was inside watching television and practicing handgun maneuvers."

"The gun Norris was practicing with when officers confronted him was empty."

"Norris, a Vietnam veteran and firearms expert, testified on his own behalf that he was trying to put his semiautomatic handgun down and was turning away from the officers when Ramirez opened fire."

"That account was supported by testimony from Russell Jaicks, the trauma surgeon who operated on Norris after he was wounded."

INTRODUCTION:
Anti-gun oath-breaker Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim climbed our Enemy List rapidly when he filed a frivolous lawsuit against 18 gun manufacturers, 3 industry trade associations, and numerous local gun dealers and pawn shops. The lawsuit died in the Connecticut Supreme Court -- after wasting stacks and stacks of taxpayers' money and gun industry money. Be clear: this corruption trial couldn't happen to a more deserving pinstriped thug.
-------
"A federal judge denied Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim's request for a dismissal of his corruption indictment Thursday."

"But Judge Janet Bond Arterton's ruling in U.S. District Court in New Haven also said that prosecutors must provide more details of the unlawful benefits Ganim allegedly received."

"Ganim was indicted last October on 24 counts of racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, bribery and tax evasion. He is accused of accepting more than $400,000 worth of cash, luxury goods, meals and other items in exchange for steering city contracts."

"Ganim has pleaded innocent to the charges. His trial is scheduled to begin in January."

"Eleven other defendants, including some close associates of Ganim, have pleaded guilty to various corruption charges."

"As if liberty-minded Americans needed more of an impetus to oppose restrictive and unconstitutional gun laws, WorldNetDaily editor-in-chief Joseph Farah's shocking story last week regarding the contents of an al-Qaida training tape provided the coup de grace in terms of motivation. Trouble is, I doubt many in Congress or the White House are paying attention." --Jon Dougherty, WorldNetDaily.com

"Three people in two vehicles were detained Friday on Interstate 75 in southwest Florida based on possible terrorist threat information from Georgia, police said."

"Bomb-sniffing dogs brought to the scene alerted to material in both vehicles, said E.J. Picolo of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Live television shots at 7:15 a.m. showed explosive charges being used to blast open what appeared to be a backpack taken from one of the vehicles."

"The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued the advisory Thursday after a waitress in Calhoun, Ga., in the northwestern part of that state, told police there that she had overheard three men of Middle Eastern descent discussing terrorist plans Wednesday night."

"The Georgia woman said the men were talking about amounts of explosives and warned that Americans would 'cry on 9/13,' said Miami Police Lt. Bill Schwartz, quoting from the Georgia advisory."

Other reports during the day said these idiots' comments were "a joke."

This is WorldNetDaily's Jon Dougherty's analysis/report on the APSA Press Release that ran on KABA yesterday...
-------
"The head of an airline pilots' organization pressing for legislation to allow guns in the cockpits of commercial airliners has criticized the Bush administration's decision to deploy air-defense missiles and fighters over Washington, D.C., during the Sept. 11 commemoration – ready to shoot down any passenger jets that were hijacked."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. — C. S. LEWIS
