Asked to account for the extraordinary power proposed in the bill, a department spokeswoman initially suggested that Mr. Feeney may have drafted it badly. Only when it was pointed out that similar language had appeared in the so-called "Patriot II" draft bill the Justice Department prepared and leaked early this year did the department even acknowledge that it supports this bill as written. We hope Congress will take a different view.

I have read with interest recent editorials on guns in schools side-by-side with angry statements from parents about medical treatment decisions for Parker Jensen. Many parents may not know the connection between the two issues.
Utah law gives unique protection to concealed-weapon permit holders and keeps their names secret from the public. As a parent, you have no right to know if a teacher, coach, employee or volunteer in your child's school is carrying a gun. Shouldn't all parents have the same right to protect their children and make profound parental decisions that the Jensens seek? Being able to know if a gun is in your child's classroom seems like a very important parental right. |

A man robbed Papa John's Pizza in the 1800 block of East Amarillo Boulevard minutes after midnight Friday.
The man showed a gun and demanded cash from employees, according to Amarillo Police Department. No one was injured.
The suspect is described as a black man in his mid-20s, 5-feet 8-inches tall, weighing about 175 pounds, wearing blue jean shorts and a jersey with a jacket over it.

Papa John's has a well-known "no weapons" policy at their stores. Employees are just expected to roll over and give the criminals what they want. This is what is called "reaping the consequences of your actions."

Alarmed members of the public called the police after a man was spotted walking through Cambridge with a gun.
People reported seeing the man in full camouflage gear and military helmet in Newmarket Road and Coldham's Lane area yesterday morning with a gun clearly visible in a shoulder holster.
After the call at about 9am police officers were sent to the area and the force helicopter was sent up to carry out an aerial search, but there was no sign of the man.
He was white and in his 30s, unshaven and with a dark complexion. He was also wearing dark glasses.

An assistant police inspector accidentally fired his gun Sunday inside a local police station's firearms storeroom, police admitted.
The bullet hit the wall of the storeroom. Another officer was present in the room but no one was injured in the accident.
Yasuo Washihira, deputy chief of Nishi Iruma Police Station in Sakado, Saitama Prefecture, was apologetic.
"This kind of accident is supposedly never allowed to happen. We will train officers better to make sure they handle their handguns with the utmost security," Washihira said.
Station officials said the 49-year-old assistant inspector accidentally pulled the trigger after loading his service pistol at the storeroom before going on duty at about 8 a.m. Sunday. |
