A recent survey conducted by William English, from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, found “….that guns are used defensively by firearms owners in approximately 1.67 million incidents per year.” The number is the product of an exhaustive effort in early 2021, when roughly 54 thousand U.S. residents over the age of 18 were polled. In all,16,708 of the people who participated owned a firearm and, “…approximately a third of gun owners (31.1 percent) have used a firearm to defend themselves or their property, often on more than one occasion…” the study’s abstract explains. |

Speaking of the purchase of weapons, the pope said: “The motivation is what in a great part qualifies the morality of that act. To defend oneself is not only licit, it’s also an expression of love toward one’s homeland; whoever doesn’t defend something, doesn’t love it. Instead, those who defend, love.”
He also said it was important to reflect “now more than ever on the concept of just war.” While everyone “speaks of peace today,” there are still “so many wars happening.” |

The largest-ever scientific survey of gun owners found Americans used a gun in self-defense at least 1.67 million times per year. But the poll did a lot more than just count defensive uses; it also detailed how, when, and where they happened.
The National Firearms Survey, conducted by Georgetown University Professor William English, presented a ton of information on key questions surrounding guns in America. It found gun ownership is diversifying and gun carry is broadly popular. It found about a third of gun owners have owned an AR-15 or similar rifle and 50 percent have owned magazines holding more than ten rounds–key information for the legal battles over whether they can be banned. |

A High Point man was acquitted Thursday on a charge that he shot another man in the face during a fight outside the Silver Moon Saloon in June 2021. The man’s attorney said Thursday that his client was defending himself in an unprovoked altercation.
Mikkcos Quick, 39, of East Lexington Street in High Point, was indicted for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. He also was charged with carrying a concealed gun and driving while license revoked, Winston-Salem police said in a news release. |

A lawsuit filed this week in federal court in Buffalo seeks to block parts of a recently passed New York State law that bans carrying firearms in parks and public transit.
The lawsuit brought by two local gun owners and two national Second Amendment rights organizations also seeks to overturn a provision that puts all private property off-limits to firearms without the expressed consent of the property owners.
Those filing the lawsuit called the anti-carry presumption on private property "a massive restriction on the right to bear arms." |

This latest Heller case asked the court for an injunction to block enforcement of the limit. In a post-Bruen world, nonsensical, wholly unsupportable limits such as the carry limit is difficult, if not downright impossible to defend on the merits.
The District was coming up on the date by which the city had to respond to the lawsuit, justifying the 20-round limit. It seems that the city’s attorneys couldn’t manage to come up with an argument that wouldn’t have been laughed out of court under Bruen.
Given the current legal landscape, as Rob Romano reported last night, the city threw in the towel and used “emergency rulemaking” powers to repeal the 20-round limit. |

A jury in King County has found a man not guilty on all counts in connection to a shooting in downtown Seattle that killed one person and injured six others.
The jury of seven men and five women reached their verdicts Thursday after a day of deliberations, finding Marquise Tolbert not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Tanya Jackson, and six counts of first-degree assault, The Seattle Times reported. |

The politically paranoid always find conspiracies among those on the other side of the political divide. It’s one way to avoid substantive conversations about important public policies. Here’s another NRA example to show the absurdity of these claims.
Let’s say Bob is a gun owner who feels strongly about the right to self-defense. Bob pays for an NRA membership and financially contributes to their political efforts. Which is more likely? Does the NRA lobby for gun issues because Bob gave them money, or does Bob give to the NRA because it lobbies on gun issues?
While many on the political left seem to think it’s the former, anyone with common sense knows it’s the latter. |

Under pressure from the governors of New York and California and their enormous state pension funds, Visa, Mastercard and American Express have agreed to keep a list of commercial transactions made through their credit card systems at gun shops.
These credit card middlemen make more money the more purchasers spend, but this pivot to social activism, though lawful, is dangerous to freedom and manifests an antipathy to constitutional norms by the corporations whose services many of us employ without a second thought. Of course, the government involvement is unconstitutional. |

This week, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) joined 100 of his House colleagues in sending letters to the CEOs of American Express, Mastercard, and Visa expressing concern with the new firearm-specific Merchant Category Code (MCC), designed to track the use of credit cards used to purchase firearms. As this new classification is implemented, the letter calls for ensuring it is not used to track law-abiding gun owners or infringe on their Constitutional rights. |

Randy Halterman is charged with homicide and attempted homicide, accused of killing a man and wounding a woman who made their way into his home in Monroe County in 2021. Of course, it pretty much goes without saying at this point: Greene is dead wrong. Guns are almost never used in self-defense. Guns are the problem. |

There are few things Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has boasted about more during his first term in office than his success in dramatically increasing the number of people who are permitted to carry guns in public.
But Villanueva’s decision to supercharge the issuing of weapons permits has brought problems.
A Los Angeles Times investigation found that among the thousands of people who have received permits under Villanueva are dozens of donors to his election campaigns and others with special links to the sheriff. These people often gave questionable reasons for needing to be armed, received their permits more quickly than the average wait or were assisted by two deputies who worked directly for Villanueva. |

In a four-page letter to the Federal Trade Commission this week, a dozen anti-gun Democrat senators are demanding an investigation of “unfair and deceptive advertising practices used by the firearms industry,” alleging gun makers have been misleading consumers about safety as they “target children and teenagers.”

More than 100 Republicans in a letter expressed concern over the decision of several credit card giants to establish a new specific merchant code for firearms dealers, calling the effort “an assault on the Second Amendment.”
Earlier this month, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a Switzerland-based group that sets and monitors quality standards for industries of all types, confirmed that one of its subcommittees had voted to establish a new merchant category code (MCC) for firearms, which previously fell into the “general merchandise” category.
Following the decision by the influential body Visa, one of the largest debit and credit card companies, adopted the change. |

It’s only been two weeks since New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul’s expanded gun restriction laws took effect. The impacts have been immediate. Concealed carry permit holders, recreational target shooters, hunters, even historical battlefield reenactment groups, have all cried foul amidst the confusion and intrusion.
The Hochul administration is frantically responding to criticisms, trying to settle nerves from law-abiding New Yorkers but it isn’t working.
One impact may not be realized until next year. Conservation dollars could suffer a blow because of Gov. Hochul’s gun control laws – specifically her new statewide ammunition registry scheme. Laws that chill Second Amendment rights have impacts beyond their gun control agenda. |

The District of Columbia has gotten rid of its regulation limiting how much ammunition a concealed-carry handgun permit holder may carry after a local resident sued it in federal court.
This marks the second time in under a year that the local government in the nation’s capital city has been forced to amend its gun laws after being sued by Dick Heller, a civil rights activist whose multiple lawsuits have advanced the cause of Second Amendment rights in the District of Columbia and throughout the nation. |
