"In the local paper, a local says, well, I'm not sure what her point is as it's not spelled out very clearly. There are about six paragraphs of peace, love, and dope. And the rest seems to just be spewing random anti-gun tidbits that are poorly understood. So, I'll try to address the points I think she's trying to make. But the title is Sandra Rini says we should rethink term 'Militia' , so we'll go with that.Says Sandra, after quoting the second amendment:"
"This outdated provision from a Congress that never envisioned the modern military we have today is more fiercely protected than any other amendment in the Bill of Rights. ..."
"I know. Those darn outdated provisions ..." ...

"Howard Nemerov is the author of the book Four Hundred Years Of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working? and numerous pro-gun articles. Over the past few years, his research has given gun owners the ammunition necessary to intelligently argue that gun control does not make society safer and exposed the lies behind the gun-grabber’s statistics. ..." ...

"It was his early experience in the rehabilitation field that shaped Nemerov’s initial support of total civilian disarmament. His associates were peacenik types that held the common belief that guns just cause injury and death, and felt therefore that there was no legitimate reason for the civilian ownership of guns. Nemerov saw no reason to hold a different opinion." ...

"It's probably not the game-changing, "secret weapon" of the Iraq war. But it could help win the next one: a stealth sniper scope for invisible assassination."

"Battles are increasingly about taking out a few select enemies, not large numbers of foes. If you want a device that allows you to locate, target and kill a subject, you need look no further than DARPA's Super-Resolution Vision System (SRVS), which I looked at recently in the New Scientist technology blog."

"Heat haze ordinarily throws off snipers. But SRVS changes heat haze from an obstruction into a means of enhancing the view. ..." ...

New Gun Bill Shows Gun Lobby Deception

"Just hours after a Brady Center report highlighted the NRA's repeated and false denials that its bill to gut DC's gun laws would allow assault rifles on the streets of Washington, the gun lobby has revised the bill to prevent the carrying of assault weapons on DC's streets. The NRA's action implicitly concedes that the NRA has been intentionally misleading Congress and the public. The NRA’s new bill is still dangerous and should be rejected."

"... Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign [said] ... 'The gun lobby should not be telling the residents of any city that they cannot pass reasonable gun laws that are consistent with the recent Supreme Court ruling to keep their neighborhoods safe ...'" ...

Gun Control and Homeland Security

"Most discussions and debate about the regulation and/or control of firearms pivot around the issue of the relationship between gun ownership and crime, particularly inner-city crime. As critical an issue as that clearly is, there is also a heretofore neglected homeland security related dimension to the gun regulation, a new report argues."

"The report ... by the Brady Center ... makes the case that the current H.R. 6691 legislation to repeal handgun bans in Washington DC ... can, indeed must, be critiqued not only on grounds of law enforcement but of homeland security as well. Click here[.pdf] to see report."

"... the report succinctly summarizes what might be described as the 'homeland security' case for gun regulation." ...

"Orem police say the Boise man had just finished breakfast with his girlfriend when he was assaulted by a stranger with scissors."

"Orem police say for no reason at all, a complete stranger approached the Boise couple in the IHOP parking lot and started stabbing the man. He fell, and the attacker jumped on him and kept stabbing him in his face, neck and arms."

"Fortunately for the victim -- a visiting police officer from Chicago happened to be right there."

"After unsuccessfully trying to stop the attack, the off-duty officer shot the suspect -- and then held the man until Orem police arrived." ...

Obama supports gun rights

"The recent disinformation spread in the press on Barack Obama's support of the Second Amendment and the right of every law-abiding American to purchase, own, transport and use guns simply cannot go unchallenged, as this, like many other Republican talking points, is blatantly false. Contrary to what some uninformed people might think we Democrats own, use, collect and cherish our right to have guns as much as any Republican, and it seems a lot of fear about this issue is being whipped up by certain individuals who are either simply ignorant of the facts, or just want to confuse voters' minds."

"Fact: It is demonstrably untrue to assert that Barack Obama wants to confiscate firearms, a blatant lie." [hyperlink added] ...

"Barack Obama is on the campaign trail touting his support for the Second Amendment as an individual right to bear arms - a laughable assertion by a candidate who has tried to reshape himself as a moderate liberal once he secured the Democratic nomination for president."

"Luckily, for gun owners, Obama is more concerned with power than policy so he is unlikely to go after guns because it means a certain loss at the ballot box. John Kerry's decision to pander to hunters during the 2004 election is an infamous case of just how important the gun vote has become." ...

... "Next question: 'She shoots moose and wolves, poses with the sort of weapons favoured by Vladimir Putin and drug lords, and seems to have no objections to the proliferation of arsenals in the homes of Americans. Doesn't that worry you?'"

"Not very much. The second amendment to our constitution guarantees Americans the right to bear arms, a right affirmed only recently by the Supreme Court in a decision Obama says he supports. Also, we have long known, as Britain is now learning, that laws do not keep guns out of the hands of the bad guys; they only disarm law-abiding citizens and reduce their ability to defend themselves. ..." ...

Wicker, a Republican, is running in a special election Nov. 4 to fill the remaining four years of the term. He is challenged by Democratic nominee and former Mississippi governor, Ronnie Musgrove.

"The House action comes three months after the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, struck down the District of Columbia's ban on handgun possession ..."

"It's a problem that occurs and reoccurs, said Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray."

"People legally purchase handguns, then illegally resell them to criminals."

"When the guns are later seized by police — often after having been used in a crime — they are traced back to the original purchaser, who tells police the guns were lost or stolen."

"Gray this afternoon was slated to join the mayors of six other Pennsylvania cities in announcing their intent to push for local legislation requiring gun owners to report within 72 hours if a gun is lost or stolen." ...

KABA Note: If this problem does indeed 'occur and reoccur', then showing a pattern of criminal behavior should be easy without infringeing the rights of the law-abiding.

"The D.C. Council voted today to further ease gun-ownership restrictions in the city in light of a historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling, while the U.S. House of Representatives began debating a more dramatic measure that would limit the District's power to regulate firearms."

"On the most significant day of legislative activity since the Supreme Court struck down the city's 32-year-old handgun ban in a landmark Second Amendment decision June 26, the council unanimously passed emergency legislation to end safe-storage requirements for firearms and to permit ownership of semiautomatic pistols. The measure requires the signature of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), who supports it, and then would take effect immediately." ...

A Mt. Juliet police officer has been arrested by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in connection to an April 6 choking incident during a traffic stop along Adams Lane in Wilson County.

William Cosby Jr., 36, of 708 Juliet Drive in Mt. Juliet, was indicted in August on two counts of aggravated assault — one for bodily injury and one for fear of bodily injury — and one count of aggravated perjury.

Cosby is accused of using a “vascular restraint maneuver” on James Lawrence Anders Jr., of Lebanon, until he blacked out. The perjury charge stems from a report Cosby filled out accusing Anders of resisting arrest. Cosby was booked into the Wilson County jail on a $5,000 bond.

"A Denver police report released Friday backs up a witness account that an officer chased down a yellow lab named Rocky deemed 'vicious' before shooting it to death."

"'(The officer) had said the dog had lunged at him so he had to shoot him,' said the dog's owner ... 'If he lunged at him, why was he shot in the back and the back of the head? ...'" ...

"Denver police spokeswoman Sharon Hahn said the ... 110-pound dog 'turned on the officer,' but an early police report says nothing about the dog charging any officer."

"Hahn said the case remains under review."

"Neighbor Serferino Quintana, 60, said he saw an officer chase Rocky."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Authorities say an off-duty Chicago police officer shot and critically injured his two children before taking his own life.

Chicago police didn't identify the officer involved in Monday's shootings, saying only that he was 31 years old and had been on the force for four years.

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says officers responded to a "shots fired" call at the home on the city's southwest side at 10:45 a.m.

When they arrived, they were told children were inside so they rushed in. They found the dead officer and the critically injured children.

The 8-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police say the incident appears related to a domestic dispute involving the children's mother.
