"It was hard for me, a non-lawyerly type, to understand how shutting down the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) for a few days to upgrade the antiquated program was a breach of the Second Amendment. ..."

"No sooner had I penned out and e-mailed that opinion to this paper, though, than I started to have second thoughts. ..."

"Long story short, I had a terrible time getting to sleep that night. ... And when I finally did nod off, I had a really weird dream in which I was having a conversation with a man who looked to be from another era, like back in the colonial days maybe, and he talked to me like he knew me and knew how that PICS thing had been pestering me." ...

... "But when DC filed its petition [for a writ], the petition flagrantly violated DC's representations to the Court of Appeals. DC's petition for a writ of certiorari presents one, and only one question: 'Whether the Second Amendment forbids the District of Columbia from banning private possession of handguns while allowing possession of rifles and shotguns.' ..."

"... The most logical inference is that DC (despite statements by the Mayor at press conferences) has concluded that it cannot convince the Supreme Court that the Second Amendment is not an individual right. DC is retreating to position that the individual Second Amendment right is not violated by a handgun ban, as long as individuals can possess other guns." ...

"National Hunting and Fishing Day is September 22nd. This is an annual celebration of our hunting and fishing heritage as set by Congress. It provides a day for celebrating our freedoms to hunt and fish, as well as the Second Amendment. Whether you are a hunter, fisherman, trapper or shooter take some time this special day to think about that heritage. Even better would be to take some time to take a new shooter, young or old to the range. ..."

"Jeff Foxworthy is the National Honorary Chairman for 2007. ... 'It just drives my wife crazy', laughs Foxworthy, 'She goes, 'We get invited to the Oscars. You turn that down. We get invited to the Grammy's. You turn that down. But you never turn down a hunting or fishing trip.' ..." ...

"I get several phone calls or e-mails from other FFL dealers stating that 'my inspector is a nice guy' or others in bewilderment when their license is revoked that this nice guy is now destroying their livelihood."

"We have a 'nice guy' who is out of the Boise office who has audited us for years. We had always called him for questions or concerns, most of the time we were overly cautious but always wanted to cover our bases."

"The problem is that they are there to follow orders. If their agenda is to shut down gun shops then you quickly become the enemy. They cannot go into a shop and not find any violations, it will then reflect that they are not doing their job. ..." ...

Process to obtain a CCW permit in Arizona

"For anyone interested I wanted to share the process I went through to get my Arizona CCW permit (permit to carry a concealed weapon). Just for clarification for those unfortunate enough to live in states that issue permits specific to a specific list of gun calibers, Arizona is much better in that my permit allows me to carry any concealed legal weapon whether it be a gun or a sword ... On a side note, I personally don't feel I should need permission from the government in the form of a permit to allow me to exercise my right to 'bear arms' as protected by the 2nd Amendment, but until we can get the current law improved here, obtaining a CCW permit is the only way I can carry concealed without risking dire consequences. ..." ...

"Three years after Muslim terrorists attacked a school in Beslan ... terrorism and law enforcement experts say most U.S. schools have not prepared at all to deal with the possibility of such an assault."

"More disturbingly ... such attacks are most definitely being prepared and rehearsed ..." ...

"The pair of trainers say the most effective deterrent to such attacks is to ensure there is an armed presence within every school. They recommend armed security as well as encouraging teachers and administrators to carry firearms."

"Everyone interested in the Second Amendment is following the case of a Medford teacher who is suing the school district there because it won’t let her carry a firearm at work even though she has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. But the facts of the case make it a case that is less about gun rights than about common sense."

"The teacher says she wants to be armed because she’s afraid of her ex-husband, who she says has threatened to harm her."

"So a teacher fears she will be attacked at work, perhaps while she is teaching her class. Regardless of whether she is armed, this has to be of concern to the school, the pupils and all their parents. If the teacher’s fears are well grounded ... the school faces a heightened risk. ..." ...

"The suggestion sounds as if it belongs in a futuristic, satiric morality play: A proposal to allow school districts to authorize staff members to carry handguns on campus."

"Proponents of the bill, introduced recently in the state House of Representatives, claim that having an armed teacher, coach or custodian on site might have prevented tragedies such as the Virginia Tech shootings."

"What they can't predict is if cross-fire would simply make an already deadly situation all the more tragic. That's a gamble that few parents would be willing to take with the safety of their children." ...

"Rudolph W. Giuliani will go before the rank and file of the National Rifle Association on Friday, seeking support for his Republican presidential campaign from a group he once likened to 'extremists' for its efforts to repeal the ban on assault weapons."

"Rudy Giuliani takes his presidential pitch to the [NRA] Friday -- a group he once likened to 'extremists' -- but his past record as the Republican Party's biggest gun-control booster will make it almost impossible for him to win broad support, activists say."

"In fact, a scheduling coincidence Friday shows just how hard it is for Giuliani to escape his past: He speaks to an NRA meeting here on the very same day his 2000 lawsuit against gun-makers goes before a federal appeals court in New York."

"Giuliani has tried hard ... to claim a political conversion on guns -- from a big-city mayor who once called for ... national gun laws to a Second Amendment supporter who thinks those decisions should be left to local governments." ...

"The Republican Party in New Hampshire recently came up with a novel idea for a fund-raiser: having donors pay $25 to fire semiautomatic and automatic weapons at a Manchester gun range. It was such a success that party officials in other cities plan to hold similar events."

"Guns haven't much figured as an issue in the Republicans' 2008 presidential campaign, overshadowed by the war in Iraq and health care. That will change tomorrow when the nation's largest gun-owners' advocacy group, the National Rifle Association, holds a forum in Washington where its members will assess the leading Republican candidates' commitment to their cause." ...

"Former New York City Mayor and Republican Presidential contender Rudy Giuliani said this week that he was 'liberals' worst nightmare.' However, the truth is, Rudy Giuliani is everyone's worst nightmare."

"That Rudy Giuliani is currently trying to cast himself as a conservative is beyond laughable--it is hilarious. This is a man who ... has been one of the country's most radical proponents of gun control. He made New York a sanctuary city for illegal aliens and is a strong proponent of amnesty for illegal aliens. As a prosecutor, his abuse of power and disregard for law are legendary. ..." ...

Giuliani said he preferred to focus on the lion's share of issues on which he and the National Rifle Association agree."

"Sen. McCain, R-Ariz., and the former New York mayor are among several officials speaking Friday at a National Rifle Association conference."

"In his prepared speech, McCain refers to a lawsuit by Giuliani and other mayors against the gun industry, to Giuliani's shifting Second Amendment position and to Giuliani's use of the term "extremists" in relation to the NRA." ...

The state attorney general's office says the north-central Idaho city of Moscow doesn't have the legal authority to enforce a gun ban.

In a letter Tuesday, the office told city officials they can't restrict people from legally carrying exposed or concealed weapons on public property.

Moscow Mayor Nancy Chaney sought gun restrictions following a May 19 shooting rampage that left four dead and three wounded.

Chaney says she's personally disappointed by the letter, but not surprised.

In Idaho, it is legal to carry an exposed firearm in public, and a concealed weapon with the proper permit.

Chaney says allowing guns at public meetings could hinder an open debate.
