... "One of the reasons I like carrying a gun: it encourages me to scan my world for trouble. I like being alert. As the son of a Holocaust survivor, I’m predisposed to it. By the same token, scanning for trouble forces me to value the times when trouble’s nowhere to be found. I reckon you can’t relax if you’ve never really been scared. Make that wary."

"More than that, carrying a gun is a constant reminder of my responsibilities. It reminds me that no matter how I feel about myself, no matter what I’m going through, I have an obligation to protect innocent life. I don’t know why. I just do. It’s a duty that applies to the people I love. And the people I don’t love. And people I used to love." ...

"Regular readers will know that I most often write about the politics of the Second Amendment and Gun Control. While that is what I am most well known for, I am not 'one dimensional' by any stretch. I am a true 'Student of the Gun' [hat tip Paul Markel] as it were, or, in even broader terms, a student of the art of combat, with or without a firearm."

"I have worn out copies of 'The Art of War ( tiny.cc/49plmx )' by Sun Tzu. My personal library includes most of the most common tomes on the subject, including Von Clausewitz and his work on the philosophy of warfare entitled 'On War ( tiny.cc/djqlmx )' as well as both 'On Combat ' and 'On Killing' by noted expert Lt Col Dave Grossman." ...

"The POGR site features an image of an upcoming advertisement that can be downloaded emphasizing rank-and-file law enforcement support for I-591. Two major groups, the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs and Washington State Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association have also announced their opposition to I-594, the 18-page gun control measure backed by the [WAGR]. ..." ...

"There is a smug naivete in the minds of gun control supporters, combined with a basic pagan fervor."

"One one hand, they are the most superstitious of cargo cults, wedded firmly to the animist idea that an inanimate object ... can possess and take over an otherwise sane and rational human being and turn them into a homicidal savage. If you listen to them, or watch them recoil in horror at the mere sight of a firearm, it is clear that they think that the firearm itself—not the intention or skill of the individual possessing it—is the problem." ...

"What to do with your heater while seeing a man about a dog – or more critically, dropping a deuce – has vexed gun owners since elimination technology progressed from the outhouse to indoor plumbing. Public facility stalls that don’t extend to the floor tend to cause gun owners do stoopid things in order to keep their pistols on the down low. And the law of averages being what they are, the more people handle their firearms, the greater the chances of a negligent discharge. From his commentary above, Colion Noir apparently views the lack of good urinal and stall options as a nefarious hoplophobic conspiracy . . ." ...

"The K31and the P210 are for me the most iconic products of the Swiss weapon industry. All in, the K31 screams 'Swiss Made.' The mechanics are exquisite yet simple, it’s sturdy, but elegant and the accuracy fits the stereotype of everything made in the Alps republic. Thankfully, one thing about the rifle that’s not Swiss is the price. I paid 150CHF for my 1941 K31 and a quick on-line check confirmed that the US price is pretty much the same making it a super-affordable bolt action . . ." ...
