MI: Need to be able to protect ourselves

Anyone in this country that thinks we, the citizens, don’t need AK47 and AR15 semi-automatic rifles and large capacity magazines just needs to look at what is happening in Hong Kong. If you don’t think that could happen in this country, you’ve got your head in the sand. In fact, we should have the same weapons as the military as it was set up when the Constitution was written. That’s what the second amendment is all about!

First, it is not the case that those who question the wisdom of allowing military style weapons to be largely available are confused by terminology. Few people think of the AR-15 as an assault rifle just because of the letters AR. This is irrelevant. Whether it is an AR or an AK, the point is the same.

Bishop goes on to assert that the only difference between the AR and other weapons is looks. Not true, and I’m sure he knows it. A bolt action rifle that holds three rounds cannot take out fifty people in a matter of seconds.

One said a new "red flag” law on gun ownership could save lives.

The other said laws don’t stop criminals.

They were two snippets of the testimony presented in a Wednesday Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee public hearing on gun-related issues. It came after a divisive Tuesday in Harrisburg when Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf chastised a Republican committee chairman for creating a “blockade” to what Wolf described as widely supported anti-gun violence proposals.

Likewise, Trump rejected the effort to advance gun restrictions through the U.N. by asserting:

There is no circumstance under which the United States will allow international interests to trample on the rights of our citizens, including the right to self-defense. That is why this year I announced that we will never ratify the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty, which would threaten the liberties of law-abiding American citizens.

Is the Second Amendment relevant in today’s society? Does the Second Amendment only give us the right to own a firearm if we are a member of “a well-regulated militia”?

The United States has not had a militia for 150 years; should it be reinstated and all firearm owners, including myself, be required to be a member of a militia?

Open carry of holstered pistols was commonly seen at the Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) in Phoenix, Arizona, 21-23 September 2019.

The GRPC had an overflow crowd of over a thousand activists from around the nation, many were standing in the back of the conference room, trying to find seats. It was the largest GRPC ever.

There were numerous examples of holstered pistols in evidence. Open carry has become common and accepted in Arizona, as a result of Second Amendment activists in the state.

But he still hasn't unveiled the package of plans he's worked on with Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and gun rights advocates such as the Buckeye Firearms Association. This package is different than a set of seven bills that were heard in a Senate committee last week - three of which were bipartisan.

DeWine said he has respect for Speaker Larry Householder’s worries about background checks for personal gun sales and his overall concerns about a version of a red flag gun seizure law.

The only issue with this line of argumentation is that it is completely ahistorical. The suggestion that the Founding Fathers could never have foreseen semi-automatic or fully automatic weapons is patently false because these weapons already existed in one form or another in the 1780’s. The Girandoni air rifle, invented in 1779, was a precursor to modern semi-automatic rifles. Capable of firing up to 80 shots in one charge, the Girandoni was most famously used in the expeditions of Lewis and Clark.

Britain has effectively banned firearms, so in recent years the country's criminal class has turned to killing with knives -- leading certain church leaders to call for banning the sale of common chef's knives.

I swear I'm not making this up.

In the Diocese of Rochester, church leaders published an open letter urging government to "take urgent measures to promote the sale of safe kitchen knife designs and restrict those designs which have been used in so many acts of violence."

"Knife violence" in Britain is up an estimated 80% in just the last five years.

“It’s pretty straightforward. As an elected official, I'm not allowed to carry [it] to my own representative meetings and if we don’t have a security presence there and I can’t carry into that meeting, then I have no means of self-defense," said Wisnefski.

Board members ultimately decided not to make any current changes to current security measures.

Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) announced the filing of an important legal brief in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the State of California’s ban on so-called “large-capacity” magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. The brief is available online at FPCLegal.org.

FPC's coalition brief was joined by nine individual gun owners, all plaintiffs in another federal magazine lawsuit, and eight Second Amendment advocacy organizations, including Second Amendment Foundation and Armed Equality—a pro-right to keep and bear arms group that emphasizes armed and responsible self-defense for its LGBTQ+ members, who are especially vulnerable to attacks involving multiple assailants.

Rights That Can't Be Taken

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does not grant the right to bear arms to the American citizen. Here, many misunderstand the basic founding principles of our country. The right to bear arms, just like the right to free speech, assembly, life, and liberty, are all rights we are born with. Neither the Constitution nor any federal law grant those rights, they are our inheritance. The Second Amendment reminds and restricts the government from its ability to interfere with those rights.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004)
