Try as he might, Kerry cannot hide his anti-gun beliefs

"OVER Labor Day weekend, Sen. John Kerry was presented a gift from Cecil Roberts of the United Mine Workers of America: a brand-new (and union-made) shotgun."

"It’s a good gun, a Remington 11-87, successor to the time-proven Remington 1100. Possibly the most widely used semiautomatic shotgun in America today. I don’t blame the senator for accepting it with a smile."

"Needless to say, the photo of Kerry admiring the shotgun has received wide publication. Also needless to say, the Democrats were quick to see the photo’s usefulness in combating their candidate’s anti-gun record. And once again, as before with the 'Reporting for duty' salute, it took less than a day for the incident to turn into another display of the tone-deafness of the Kerry campaign." ...

Kerry corrects answer about an assault rifle

"Senator John Kerry's campaign said that he did not own a Chinese assault rifle, as he was quoted as saying in Outdoor Life magazine, but a single-bolt-action military rifle. The campaign said the error was the fault of aides who had filled out the magazine's questionnaire on Kerry's behalf. According to Michael Meehan, a spokesman for the campaign, Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, owns two guns, a double-barreled 12-gauge shotgun and the rifle, which Meehan said Kerry 'keeps as a relic' and has never fired. Meehan said the gun had no make or model markings on it and that Kerry 'got it from a friend years ago,' adding that such rifles first were manufactured in Russia more than 100 years ago and were used by the North Koreans and the Vietcong." ...
-------

So when Sen. Kerry says he only wants to ban "assault weapons" we can assume that 100 year old designs of "single-bolt-action military rifle[s]" will be included?

"Heeding warnings that terrorists could try to disrupt the fall elections, state and local election officials are aiming to coordinate communications and decision-making with governors and security officials so voting goes as smoothly as possible." ...

"[New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca] Vigil-Giron said planners need to make sure that elections continue securely, but also without scaring voters - for instance, by stationing heavily armed guards at the polls."

"'The last thing we want to see happening is a National Guardsman standing there with a rifle, keeping watch,' she said." ...

2) How about the unorganized militia?

"Two senior House Democrats called on President Bush yesterday to declare whether he supports a bill that would repeal virtually all of the District's gun laws, as GOP House leaders scheduled a vote on the measure tomorrow." ...

"In their letter to Bush, Reps. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) and John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) said the bill would 'undo many of the security measures that have been put into place' in the nation's capital since the 2001 terrorist attacks."

"They wrote that if the bill became law, 'someone could legally possess a semiautomatic [.50-caliber] sniper rifle and armor piercing ammunition in an apartment overlooking . . . Connecticut Avenue, a common route for motorcades.'"

"'Ice cream and hot dog vendors [on the Mall] could be armed with assault weapons. . . . A Capitol Hill resident who lived across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court could sit on his porch with a fully-loaded semiautomatic Uzi Carbine.'" ...

And why would you be nervous about your constituents being armed? Are you doing things that you think they might not like?

"Much has been made of the expiration of the 1994 law banning the manufacture of 19 semi-automatic weapons classified as assault weapons. The law, pushed by former President Clinton through a fiercely divided Congress, promised to rid America of the supposedly favorite weapons of drug dealers, cop killers and hardened criminals."

"With the law off the books, gun-control advocates are clamoring for its reinstatement, again trying to convince the public that these guns are inherently dangerous and suitable only for criminal use. That is not the case. Hopefully, Americans will be more skeptical the second time around." ...

... "But those of us [police officers] involved in the struggle to stand between urban communities and criminals can't do it alone, and we surely can't do it with our government working against us."

"In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed the Federal Assault Weapons Act. It didn't affect hunting rifles or handguns that people use to protect their homes from intruders. Instead, it outlawed 19 types of assault-style weapons that have no purpose besides destroying lives." ...

"We cannot fight terrorism at home and abroad if we make "cop-killer" bullets, Uzis and AK-47s (like the one that wounded Miami-Dade Officer Keenya Hubert) easily accessible. These guns have nothing to do with hunting or self-defense. They are made to hunt and kill humans." ...
-------

KABA asks why the Chief of Police in Cloquet, MN (pop. 11,201) recently called these guns "the most effective tools possible"? Perhaps Chief Darling would care to explicate the circumstances under which cops across the country would need to "hunt and kill humans" outside the bounds of self-defense (which these guns have "nothing to do" with)?

"A Tennessee police woman says she accidentally shot her brother in an argument over a tub of butter."

"State trooper Angelinette Crawford lost her temper after her brother, Jaison Bilbrew, 19, lent the butter to a neighbour."

"She told her brother that it was time he moved out of the Antioch apartment where he had been living with Crawford and her young son."

"'Their verbal argument turned into a shoving match at the top of the stairs,' police told The Tennessean."

"Crawford went to her bedroom and got her service weapon, a Glock semiautomatic pistol, according to police."

"The argument continued, then Bilbrew grabbed Crawford's arm and they wrestled on the floor. Bilbrew got up, and as Crawford was getting up, the gun discharged into his leg, police said." ...

We have an update now on a teenager who police say was killed in an act of self defense at a Buffalo social club.

Investigators have identified the teen who was killed on Friday night as Dwayne Rodgers.

Rodgers and an accomplice, 16 year old Zontail Warren allegedly fired off a shot and demanded cash from seniors who were playing cards at the club on Fillmore Avenue.

A 64 year old man returned fire, killing Rodgers and wounding Warren, who's in fair condition at ECMC.

Police say the 64 year old who shot back did so to protect himself and will not face charges.

"Guns that are purchased and carried legally are not usually involved in crimes, law enforcement officials say."

"'A lot of the criminal element doesn't go to your local gun store and get a gun, nor do they come to the Sheriff's Department and get a gun permit,' said Tulare County sheriff's Lt. Keith Douglas. 'A large amount of weapons that are used in crimes, the people that have them don't have permits.'"

"Xavier Garcia ... said the process for getting a gun, including the waiting period, helps prevent criminals from buying guns."

"That process involves passing a written test, conducting a background check and waiting 10 days to be able to receive the gun. Garcia called the 10 days a 'cooling-off period.'" ...

KABA Note: If you are having an argument and get into your car, drive to a gun shop, select a gun, purchase it (even without any state or federal folderol) and appropriate ammunition, load it, drive back home and use it, that is pre-meditation, not "heat of passion".

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Police are searching for the killer who shot a 13-year-old boy dead Monday in a Southeast D.C. building.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of Douglas Place, Southeast, where inside an apartment they found Michael Swann with multiple gunshot wounds. Swann, who lived in a nearby building on the same block, died at Prince George's Hospital.

Police say they don't know what Swann was doing in the apartment and why he wasn't at school. Officers arrived just before 11 a.m., which is during the school day. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 202-727-9099.

Swann becomes the 21st person in D.C. under the age of 18 to meet a violent end this year. That's a drastic jump from all of 2003, when 12 juveniles were killed in the city. There were 16 juvenile deaths in 2002, according to the Metropolitan Police. [emphasis added]

... "Londonderry senior Blake Douglass has submitted a photo in which he holds his unloaded shotgun, breech open, over his shoulder. In the picture, he wears his shooting vest and gloves. This is not an aggressive pose in which Douglass is trying to strike fear into the hearts of his classmates. He does not wear a bandoleer and point pistols at the camera. Douglass, an avid trap shooter, poses passively with the tools of his favorite pastime, which by the way happens to be an Olympic sport."

"Londonderry High has a 'zero tolerance' policy on violence, drugs and alcohol. According to school administrators, guns fall under the 'violence' category. Therefore, the yearbook refuses to publish the photo Douglass submitted." ...

"As it stands, the school is not taking an anti-violence stance. It is taking an anti-gun stance. The former is justifiable; the latter is not."

..."The incidence of property crimes in the U.S. apparently tracks [trails?] the incidence in other advanced societies. The U.S. - with the First World's highest percentages of regular church-goers, plus its high rates for gun-ownership - endures more bloodshed." ...

"Statistics regarding guns and crime probably are as reliable as '60 Minutes.' Compilers on both sides can support their agendas with data, so-called. We believe individuals have the right to own firearms. Yet if so many guns in private hands truly deterred crime, then the U.S. would be a much safer place."
-------

Why is it that when Dr. Lott compiled reams of data, taking into account (among other things) age, ethnicity, income, home ownership rates, marriage rates, education levels, rates of drug and alcohol use and abuse, "community policing" policies, police officers per capita, police officers on the street per capita, prosecution rates, conviction rates and incarceration rates, in literally thousands of counties, finding again and again that as the number of permits issued rise, crime drops, the antis say that he "obviously missed some factor", but when some yutz says "hey, if guns reduce crime, why's there so much crime in the US?" they are silent?
