... "The Founding Fathers of this country designed the Constitution and the Bill of Rights specifically to forestall just such an abuse of federal power by strictly limiting federal authority and by retaining the ultimate instruments of popular self-government — militia. Such is the historical lesson at the heart of Stephen P. Halbrook's book The Founders' Second Amendment: Origins of the Right to Bear Arms."

"The book is a study of the period from 1768 to 1826, as it says on the book’s flyleaf, 'from the last years of British rule and the American Revolution through the adoption of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and the passing of the Founders' generation.' ..." ...

... "This point cannot be overstressed. The reason that a man takes up resistance to government is that his own life is his highest value. He necessarily holds it in higher regard than assertions of 'public policy', or their methods. A rational man understands that he is given to walk the planet for only a limited number of days. A principled man, who would make the most of each one of those days, will also never submit a single one of them to any other powers but his own."

"The gun-control activist whose provocative billboards have been turning heads along the Massachusetts Turnpike for 13 years today will unveil one of his most eye-popping messages yet - a fake neon advertisement for American gun shows where people can buy weapons, no questions asked."

"'We Sell Guns! No ID required. No background checks. Criminals and terrorists welcome!' the billboard peals."

"'Gun shows are the equivalent of Al Qaeda terrorists walking directly onto the airplane while you and I wait in the TSA line,' John Rosenthal, founder and chairman of Stop Handgun Violence, said in a recent interview. 'They don't want us to go on airplanes but they let Al Qaeda buy guns unprotected.'" ...

"The designation by Senator John McCain of Governor Sarah Jane Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate and her relatively thin or unknown record on many issues, including gun violence prevention, makes her answers to the following questions important:" ...

"-- Most Americans ... support banning military-style semiautomatic assault weapons. What is your position?"

"-- Do you agree with Senator McCain that the 'gun-show loophole' ... should be closed?"

"-- What did you mean when you described 'attacks on our Second Amendment rights' as equivalent to gangs and drug use as something that would 'harm family life?' ... Does this include efforts by groups like the Brady Campaign to make it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons?" ...

"Two years later, the case in Brooklyn federal court will have a much more subdued ending — likely to occur this week."

"The business is poised to become the latest in a string of firearms dealers that have settled lawsuits accusing them of contributing to street crime in New York by making it easy for customers to get around rules intended to keep guns off the black market." ...

Baltimore police say the owner of an auto repair shop fatally shot a man trying to rob his business.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday at Joe's Garage in northwest Baltimore.

Police spokesman Sterling Clifford says this was the second time that owner Joseph Goldman has shot someone trying to rob his business, but he did not have further details about the first shooting.

In Friday's incident, police say two men entered the business and displayed a handgun, but Goldman grabbed his own gun and fired at the men, hitting one.

The injured man was taken to Sinai Hospital where police say he was pronounced dead. Police did not release that man's name.

The second man fled and police are still looking for him.

"All of Obama's big-name supporters are anti-Second Amendment activists like Mayors Daley of Chicago and Bloomberg of New York."

"Those stances earned McCain a 'C+' rating from the group in his 2004 re-election race after previously consistent 'A' grades in past races."

"But in his race against Democratic nominee Sen.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY
