"...I'm proud to be a police officer, and even more proud to have been a tactical officer with the Englewood District. Despite what George Lowe thinks, some of us who actually are concerned about getting the bad guys off the street, so we do what others won't and go where some will not. As a result, our lives are put on the line every day..." --James Sangster |

"In a showdown that some call political correctness, Jungle Cruise skippers are disarmed and only space-age toy weapons are being sold."
No more will the skippers on the Jungle Cruise shoot blanks at the mechanical hippos; no more toy flintlocks will be sold. |

"Based on early indications, most members of the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association may have been left unprepared for a building controversy over the organization's support of CARA ...
But over the Labor Day weekend, many NRA Board members expressed bewilderment over CARA's provisions, and even greater dismay at finding themselves assailed over NRA's support of it." --John Lankford |

"A guiding principle of politics is that "all politics is local," and that if an idea won't fly on Main Street it won't fly. Main Street USA is not Pennsylvania Avenue! ...
Thus, it is not surprising that many of them decry the provision for condemnation of real property in the CARA proposal. Nor is it surprising that they may hold the perception that the NRA they have long supported is abandoning their overall interests in this instance." |

"One of my favorite memories comes from some years back. I had my family then, and lived in Arizona, where it is lawful to carry a defense pistol. While driving a road north of Prescott, my then-5-year-old son, Colin, had an epiphany of sorts. "Dad," he said, "I know why you carry a pistol..."
Expecting a comment about self-defense from snakes (including those wearing cowboy outfits), I was floored when he continued:
"...because a rifle won't fit in the holster!" --Keith R. Wood |

The government established a registry of weapons owned by private citizens, so the government would know where to seize the weapons if that became necessary.
An excellent column on the gun registries being compiled in Pennsylvania.
KABA NOTE: Paul Carpenter, Morning Call Colmunist, explains, "..Pennsylvania's most eminent law enforcement establishment is telling all the kiddies that it is all right to commit illegal acts.." |

Schizophrenic Ryan Tait Eslinger had scars on his neck and forearms from a suicide attempt and was on new medication that his parents contend made him appear drunk when he walked into Kimball Junction's Kmart to buy a shotgun on a spring day five years ago.
A day later, the 19-year-old Park City man used the Remington 870 to end his life. In a federal lawsuit, Eslinger's parents claim their son's death would have been prevented if store employees had followed gun laws. |

Corinne Wood officially will enter the governor's race Sunday, sources say, launching a bid to become Illinois' first woman governor and likely touching off the most hotly contested race for the Republican nomination in decades.
In a three-way race for governor, with two candidates opposing abortion rights, political analysts say Wood stands a better chance of emerging from the field.

SIXTH LETTER ON PAGE
"...It is very hard to tell the cops from the thugs ... Policemen need to look like policemen. I sincerely believe that the young cop would be alive today if he had been dressed in the uniform of a Chicago policeman and following the rules of engagement carefully taught to him at the Police Academy. It is time to disband these subculture Tactical Units." --George Lowe |

Details were not filed with the court, but Rogers said the agreement calls for a new 3½-year contract with promoter Niles Gun Show beginning Oct. 20-21. The Agricultural Society also will pay the promoter $75,000, which Rogers believed to be for lost show revenue.

"As the new school year begins, many students and parents feel some apprehension. Thoughts of Columbine and other school shootings flit into their minds, and they wonder whether students will be safe... Eliminate that feeling that nobody cares, schools reason, and you eliminate the reason students resort to guns."
**Finally! An editorial about violence that doesn't even mention gun control! Maybe someone is starting to figure out that gun control isn't crime control... |

"A group of machine-gun enthusiasts who celebrate the weapon with a gun shoot and expo in Maine every year has filed a lawsuit against the Million Mom March, accusing a spokeswoman of defamation.
The Hiram Maxim Historical Society Inc., named after the Mainer who invented the machine gun in 1883, claims in its lawsuit that Cathie Whittenburg of the Southern Maine Chapter of the Million Mom March made false statements that harmed the society."
