"About 1.7 million U.S. children live in homes that have loaded and unlocked guns, according to what is described as the first comprehensive survey of gun storage in homes across the country."

"The study, published Tuesday in the journal Pediatrics, found that 2.5 percent of children live in homes with loaded and unsecured firearms. Estimates from the early 1990s had put the percentage at 10 percent. The new results suggest a decline, but that doesn't mean there's cause for celebration, said Catherine Okoro, a study author." ...

"President Bush's next pick for the Supreme Court, not his choice of Judge John Roberts as chief justice, could be the nomination that gives conservatives a firm grip on the court."

"If he chooses a hardline judicial conservative to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Bush could set off a feverish partisan battle in the Senate."

"But the president's weakening political standing could compel him to nominate a more moderate conservative less likely to draw fire from liberal opponents." ...

Following the looting of the local Dollar Store, neighbors who very rarely spoke to each other, got together to protect their own. They’re not going out hunting down anyone; they’re just camping out at their houses with their constitutionally protected firearms preventing the roving bands of criminals from destroying their peaceful middle class neighborhood." ...

"I have already heard from one group of nurses asking if I would come teach them gun safety and get them familiar with firearms, even though in their state it is pretty much impossible to get concealed-carry permits. They are going to buy pistols and store them at the various hospitals and clinics where they work. One doctor that I know in California has already gone to her hospital board demanding a change in the no-guns policy, pointing to New Orleans as an example of what happens in a major disaster, and pointing out that her hospital serves an area expected to be among the hardest hit when the Big Shake comes. ..." ...

"RFID technology could also enable tracking of individuals, as the chip broadcasts the cardholder’s presence to each reader he passes. No matter how secure the RFID protocols allegedly are, broadcasting one’s presence to a series of readers leaves a record of one’s place and time. That information can be taken by hidden readers just about anywhere an American goes—a political meeting, a gun show, a place of worship. It is an open invitation to stalkers and thieves, as well as government agents who regard constitutional proscriptions on search and surveillance as obstacles rather than as American principles." Police have not arrested a woman involved in a fatal shooting Saturday because it may have been self-defense, a detective said Sunday.

Thaddeus Prater, 22, was shot once in the neck in an apartment at the Oakwood Apartments, 6351 Vega Drive, homicide detective Mike Carroll said.

Police did not arrest the woman because witnesses said she shot Prater after he forced his way into an apartment she shares with her boyfriend, Carroll said.

The boyfriend had been arguing with Prater and some others outside the apartment before the shooting, Carroll said.

The investigation is continuing, he said.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As an individual, I believe, very strongly, that handguns should be banned and that there should be stringent, effective control of other firearms. However, as a judge, I know full well that the question of whether handguns can be sold is a political one, not an issue of products liability law, and that this is a matter for the legislatures, not the courts. The unconventional theories advanced in this case (and others) are totally without merit, a misuse of products liability laws. — Judge Buchmeyer, Patterson v. Gesellschaft, 1206 F.Supp. 1206, 1216 (N.D. Tex. 1985)
