"The fight to renew a favored ban on assault weapons effectively died Tuesday after the lead Senate sponsor of a bill to continue restrictions on the sale and manufacture of some semi-automatic weapons conceded defeat."

" 'Absent the president twisting arms, it's nil,' said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., of the chances to get a bill passed before midnight Monday, when the law expires."

"President Bush has indicated he would sign an extension of the 1994 law if Congress got it to his desk. But Bush has not asked the House to pass it, and congressional Republican leaders ... have refused to bring it to the floor for a vote." ...

But don't take it for granted, keep up the pressure.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - "Police officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that dangerous assault weapons will flood U.S. streets if the ban on those guns expires next week but Republican congressional leaders expressed no concerns about letting the restriction lapse."

Please call your Senator, Representative, and President Bush regarding this important issue.

BACKGROUND: The "Assault Weapons" ban will expire on September 13th UNLESS the legislature pushes it through to President Bush. The President has previously stated that he would sign the legislation if it made it to his desk.

MAIN POINTS: The Million Mom March and Brady Campaign to Ban Guns have launched a coordinated attack in which their supporters will flood the White House with phone calls and faxes, on September 9th, to pressure an extension of the ban. It is up to gun-rights advocates to foil their plans with an even greater number of phone calls and faxes opposing the ban for the following reasons: ..."

Fascist Chicago Dictator Mayor Daley is squealing to renew the dysfunctional Clinton/Feinstein gun ban. But his police supt. is the one looking like the bigger fool today:

"Standing next to a display of weapons seized by his officers, Police Supt. Phil Cline declared that innocent Chicagoans are alive today who might otherwise be dead, except for the assault weapons ban."

" 'I have no doubt that the ban has saved lives. We cannot count what has been prevented. But the ban has worked and it should be renewed,' Cline said." ...

" 'The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March resorted to deceptive advertising in full page ads which ran yesterday in major newspapers,' John Michael Snyder, public affairs director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, charged here today."

"Snyder, named Dean of gun lobbyists by national media, said 'the claim in the ad that 'every national police organization' supports renewal of the ban on so-called 'assault weapons,' in reality a ban on the manufacture and importation of certain semiautomatic firearms, simply is not accurate.' "

"Neither the National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP) nor the American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens (AFP&CC) supports it. The Brady bunch is out to lunch!"

Assault weapons ban works: Plug holes and let law live

"Now, as the law marks its 10th anniversary, President Bush and Congress have a novel idea for dealing with these gaping loopholes: Let the law expire entirely. That will happen Monday if they don't reverse current plans."

"Fewer assault weapons at crime scenes: Since enactment of the law, the number of assault weapons traced to crime scenes has dropped 45%, according to Crime Gun Solutions LLC, a consulting firm."

Down from a whopping 2%!

"Fewer gun fatalities. Deaths caused by guns dropped from 38,505 in 1994 to 29,573 in 2001, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

And the NIJ has found that the effects of the "assault weapons" ban on this decrease has been too small to measure.

"The embarrassing dirty secret is that no government agency dares claim that the ban has produced any reduction in crime. More embarrassingly, no agency predicts benefits from renewing the ban."

"That's because the banned guns are neither the choice of criminals nor more powerful than common deer rifles. They're functionally identical to guns owned by millions of hunters and shooters across America."

Can you help me understand how gun ownership helps?

"Gun ownership is like wrestling in water - it levels the playing field. A 110 lb woman who pulls a gun out of her purse can instantly stop two 250 lb drug crazed rapists. Gun ownership allows citizens the ability to protect their life and property from criminals. Police will rarely be in a position to stop a rape, a mugging, or a car-jacking. In these situations, only an armed female stands a good chance of surviving unharmed. Even a grown man is no match for a group of hardened hoodlums intent on hurting him or taking his property. However, a single gun in the hands of someone who is not afraid to use it can quickly quiet the most obnoxious hoodlums."

"Maryland U.S. Senate candidate E.J. Pipkin has received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association. 'While my opponent has consistently voted to prevent law-abiding citizens from lawfully possessing firearms, she has sought fit to support legislation which infringes on the constitutional rights set by our forefathers-rights I intend to uphold,' says Pipkin. 'It is time Maryland had a U.S. Senator who stands up for the rights of law-abiding citizens and supports legislation to put those criminals who commit crimes with a gun behind bars.' In 1994, Senator Barbara Mikulski voted against mandatory sentences for criminals in possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime or a drug felony (Roll Call Vote #118). In 1999, she voted against increasing the mandatory minimum and maximum sentences for the illegal transfer or use of a firearm (Roll Call Vote #118). Both bills were widely supported by second amendment rights supporters. In announcing its endorsement of Pipkin, John Frazer of the NRA comments: 'You have demonstrated your commitment to the defense of our Second Amendment rights, and you have indicated a willingness to continue this fight during your campaign for the U.S. Senate. Thank you for your hard work on behalf of the Free State’s gun owners and sportsmen.' E.J. co-sponsored a bill in the Maryland Senate in 2003 known as 'Project Exile,' a bill that prevents judges from decreasing mandatory minimum sentences imposed for crimes involving firearms. ..."

Note the paranoid histrionics in this piece. They would be amusing if they weren't so dangerous.

"Gunmakers are locked and loaded with plans to roll out deadlier, cheaper versions of their assault weapons when the federal ban on the high-powered killing machines ends next week, a watchdog group says." ...

"Why does President Bush want to put cop-killing guns back on the street?"

1 - He doesn't. He's promised to sign an extension if it reaches his desk.

2 - The Founders intended for the population of the United States to be at least as well armed as the "authorities."

3 - Because the life of a regular human being is as valuable as the life of a cop.

"I am grateful for the Second Amendment and its free practice in Texas. If Mohammed and Omar decide to walk down a busy street and start shooting bystanders, Juan and Jacob have a fair chance of pulling out conceal and carry weapons and killing the evil men where they stand. Fewer deaths and the deaths of those responsible would occur than if we followed the liberal mantra and all hide while having government sponsored dial-a-prayer: calling 911. However, such acts would be a defensive measure. It would be the equivalent to white blood cells attacking a disease organism. And we must admit, Islamicist radicals are a disease. What we need to do is remove the infection." ...

"I support George W. Bush on one political issue: guns. And one character issue: beer. That's not a hell of a lot of foundation for the leader of the Free World, but it's two more than I can muster for Kerry."

"I believe, as does George Bush, in the Second Amendment. Profoundly, as I believe in the entire Bill of Rights. Not only do I like the Second Amendment, as most Constitutional fans do, but I also like guns. Both as toys of legitimate and safe grown-up sports and games, and as tools of freedom. Guns always have protected people from hunger and tyranny. They still do."

While the light-hearted humor is appreciated, to agree with Bush on guns is to sack the Second Amendment.

Do you agree with banning "assault" weapons? Do you agree with enforcing unconstitutional gun laws? Do you support background checks for a fundamental, constitutionally protected right?

"We find a lot of the gun hot spots are associated with the narcotics trade. The two seem to go hand-in-hand. They trade guns for dope and vice and versa, and they use firearms to protect their traffic."

"Q: Do you ever get to the point where seven or eight crime guns have been traced back to a licensed dealer and you say, we've got to go talk to him?"

"A: Yes. But it may just be that the dealer sells a high volume. You cannot automatically assume they're doing anything wrong. Statistically, the number of FFLs (federal firearms licensees) that are doing anything illegal is very small. But they can cause a lot of damage. That 1 or 2 percent that decide they're going to sell guns to the criminal element is a huge problem."

An amazing account of armed wilderness self-defense. They're are alive today because WY is a CCW state.

" 'She either knocked us down or we fell down...My guide went for his gun and I went for my bear spray.' "

" 'I started spraying her and that really made her mad...then she jumped on top of me.' "

In any self defense situation, do you really want to trust your life to a can of seasoning? Sarah Brady thinks you should.

A burglar who was shot dead after breaking into a West Point Loma Boulevard apartment last month has been identified as Johnnie Curtis Smith Jr. III, 35, of Mountain View, the Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday.

Police say Smith and an accomplice broke into an apartment near Dog Beach the night of Aug. 20 while a man was asleep on the couch. The occupant, who was struck on the head with an object, then got into a struggle with one of the intruders over the intruder's gun, which went off during the fight.

Smith was taken to the hospital, where he died. His accomplice fled and has not been caught.

Police found the occupant outside the home, bleeding from a head wound.

Nothing was taken during the robbery attempt, police said.

Police determined the resident acted in self-defense and will not be arrested.
