U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that "nobody wants terrorists to have firearms" and that he was open to suggestions from experts on legislation that could address the problem, following the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. McConnell, a Republican, made his remarks amid blistering attacks by Democrats on the lack of action in Congress on legislation to prevent suspects on "watch lists" from purchasing guns or explosives. While there was no firm evidence of Republicans and Democrats in either the Senate or House of Representatives moving toward a compromise, there were hints they at least might be willing to talk. "Maybe we can find some middle ground. I hope so,” said Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat. |

Talk about your slippery slope.
Once they get the capability of putting people on gun prohibition lists like they now do with the no fly list, it will be open season for whoever is in power to oppress anyone that disagrees with them.

If they are terrorists, catch them, convict them, and put them in prison. I hear they don't let them have guns there.
If they haven't done anything to warrant a conviction, then what are you complaining about? Just about everything is illegal in the "land of the free" these days; if you can't find something to get them on, then they aren't terrorists. Being on a "watch list" doesn't cut it... no one knows how a person ends up on the list, and there's no way to know if you're on it until they say you are. There's no appeal, no adjudication, not even "guilty until proven innocent." It's "Guilty if accused."

| "And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" —Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
