UK: knife and mattock/pickaxe (!)...obviously ease of firearm not a factor: is a will, is a way...libs would say the messy/brutal/torturous use of an ax (or knife) would dissuade/deter from it's use. No, was too big/detectable/visual, he needed concealed/discreet/unnoticed.
