The 2017 legislative session is still a month away, and state lawmakers have already started pitching their ideas. Among the dozen bills introduced so far is a proposal to make it a felony to steal an American flag. Senate Bill 1009, introduced by Sen. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, would make such thefts a class 6 felony. It would put American flags in a class that previously had been reserved for guns and animals taken for the purpose of animal fighting. Theft of other items can be elevated to a felony depending on the monetary value. |

Giving judges the authority to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor takes the teeth out of the bill.
With that in it, what's the point? |

| In any case of flag theft/burning there are usually multiple misdemeanor charges that COULD be charged resulting in years worth of cumulative charges. This never happens, but I wish some would be made an example of, w/o making felons out of 'em. Some people do grow up later in life ! |
