Florida: Group cranking-up annual gun "buyback" program

Six counties -- Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Sarasota and Manatee -- will take part, exchanging $50 gift certificates to Beall's Department Stores, Beall's Outlet Stores and Winn-Dixie Marketplaces for firearms.

"Cease Fire Tampa Bay takes neither a pro- nor anti-gun position. It consists of members who want to educate gun owners about safety."

We recently countered a buy-back here in San Francisco. I can provide effective flyers for any on-site education event folks in Florida may want to conduct. Contact me at

Guy Smith - formerly of Brevard county FLA

Time for winn-dixie and beals to be on the national boycott list.

neither pro nor anti, eh??? I'm really upset that someone who is supposed to be as educated as a doctor could be so simple. These "buybacks" (a misnomer, since neither the government nor these groups ever owned our guns in the first place) won't result in any significant crime reduction. These are just the rusted junkers that old people find in the attic... or crime guns that thugs want to get rid of "no questions asked".

This isn't about making the community safer. We, and them, both know that gun buyback programs have no effect in reducing crime.

This is yet another means for this particular gun-control group to use the Media to manilupate the citizens of FL into thinking they are interested in their wellbeing.

With all the citizens FL has that can't even vote without bueracrat assistance they will probably believe this farce.

"educate gun owners about safety"?
how about the lesson they're teaching the little criminal b*astards about how to fence stolen goods?

Comment by: (9/10/2001)
They are setting up to buy guns. Not for a collection or an occasional pastime, but as I see it, to do business. Where's their license? And what becomes of the guns that they buy? I believe that if I was to try something like this, BATF, etc. would be on me like a duck on a june bug. I wonder if anyone has looked into the legality of these ridiculous programs?

I have wondered what would happen if I set up a table near a buyback and offered to purchase guns for cash, subject to my appraisal. Let the junk go to the buyback and get the decent guns for pennies on the $. As a collector would this be legal?

If the seller didn't want to show his/her driver's license, I would assume the gun is stolen or used in crime. Little old ladies just getting rid of their deceased husband's gun might want cash rather than a gift certificate.

ok call Winn Dixie at 334-240-6200 this is in Montgomery Al. I talked to one person there. Winn Dixie corp headquarters is in Jacksonville, Fla. 904-783-5000. VP Of Marketing is Micky Claire. She was out of the office so I talked to her assistant Sandy. I explained the whole thing to Sandy who was NOT aware of the support for the buy back. She said would investigate and get back to me. Fellow gun owners here are the numbers ya know what to do. Give these numbers a hernia!!!

A while back I heard about some stupid lawmaker proposing that children should have a "license" in order to have a toy gun.
Maybe we should all go pick up a bunch of 2.98 water pistols, run down to FL and cash em in!!

I now think the only way to control handgun use is to prohibit the guns. And the only way to do that is to change the Constitution. M. Gartner, then President of NBC News, USA Today, January 16, 1992, pg. A9
