Gopnik writes, “There is no reason that any private citizen in a democracy should own a handgun.”
I can think of many reasons to own a handgun, not least of them because there are so many people like Mr. Gopnik writing for major magazines and influencing the way we live – which means insisting we become defenseless victims. And contrary to Mr. Herbert’s insulting lie, Americans aren’t hooked on violence; it is criminals who are hooked on violence. Most of us go about our daily lives, meeting our obligations, living in kindness and charity, and wouldn’t harm a hair on our neighbor’s head. And when he says, “pull the guns out of circulation,” what he really means is “out of your possession.”
Submitter's note: Just because one lives north of the Mason-Dixon doesn't qualify you as a 'yankee' in this context. A 'yankee' is equal to a statist in this article.
I've met my share of northern rednecks. :0) |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy ... censorship. When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing) |
