An increase in justifiable homicides isn't a bad thing. |

"The laws have become particularly controversial in Florida, where “stand your ground” first passed and subsequently came up after the shootings of Markeis McGlockton and Trayvon Martin."
This statement invalidates the entire article. Stand Your Ground was never invoked in the Trayvon Martin shooting trial.
Any time stand your ground is a valid defense, the right person was shot. |

This is more nonsense from Vox.com. For a sampling of their anti-gun lies see John Lott's interview "John Lott Q&A: Debunking Vox.com Gun Lies" at https://www.americas1stfreedom.org/articles/2017/3/30/john-lott-qa-debunking-vox-com-gun-lies/ Stand your ground protects the law abiding citizen from having to seek a retreat where none may be available, thereby placing the life of the innocent at risk. Also a claim that anything is "associated with" an increase in any kind of crime does not mean it causes that increase. A famous example is that the increase in the water level of the Rhine River is "associated with" an increase in crime in Germany. Both the river level and crime increases during the summer months. |

Rand looked at 3 studies. One found the relationship between total homicides and stand your ground to be "uncertain". The other two resulted in only Rand's finding of "moderate" support for the proposition that stand your ground may increase total homicides and only "limited" support for an increase in gun homicides. One study's "estimates and their confidence intervals (CIs) may be unreliable indicators of the true effect of the law". Defects in the other study's model meant that "factors other than the stand-your-ground law cannot be ruled out as the cause of the observed differences between Florida and the control states." https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/stand-your-ground/violent-crime.html |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775]. |
