Tucson Facing Forced Gun Show Closure

Tucson Facing Forced Gun Show Closure
by Ken Rineer
June 2, 2000

IS THIS THE LAST GUN SHOW AT THE T.C.C.?

This could be the last show you will be able to attend at the T.C.C. The Tucson Mayor and Council has directed staff to look into a way to allow them to prohibit Pat McMann, or anyone else for that matter, from holding gun shows on any city property. They're looking for the LOOPHOLE AS YOU READ THIS! This does not surprise me, nor should it surprise you.

Councilman Fred Ronstadt IS OUR ONLY FOR SURE NO VOTE ON STOPPING THE SHOW. Councilmen Ronstadt has already attended a T.C.C. Gun Show and was impressed with how it was conducted. So if you email him, be nice and thank him for supporting us in our position.

Mayor Bob Walkup is unpredictable. I have emailed him as well as called his office. I have received NO response. A Gun Owners of America (G.O.A.) member who knows the Mayor asked him about this issue and the Mayor's response was one of surprise that he had even heard about the plan and the Mayor didn't want to discuss the matter. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?

The council members who voted for the individual sales bans at gun shows are Steve Leal, Jose Ibarra and Jerry Anderson. I can only assume the alliance will hold and they will vote for closing gun shows on all city property as well. I contacted each of them via email as well as a follow up phone call, I have received NO response from either of them.

A possible (I stress possible) pro-close the show Council Member is Shirley Scott. She states it is only being talked about, but I heard a news clip on KNST where she stated at the Million Mom March (which she attended) that there should be no more gun shows at the TCC. Councilmen Scott has indicated through her aid, John Macko, she will attend the show. Cudo's for her if she does!

I am not sure where Carol West is coming down on this issue. She did vote against (as did Bob Walkup, Fred Ronstadt & Shirley Scott) the ban on private sales at gun shows on city property without background checks, so it could help to nudge her our way on the total closure of gun shows on city property. I did receive a call from her staff to inquire about the invitation, but that was the last I have heard. Not sure what she'll do. I hope she attends. You might want to give her call and ask if she attended.

Here is a list of the Mayor and Council email addresses as well as their office phone and fax.

email_mayor@mail.ci.tucson.az.us; Mayor Bob Walkup; phone 791-4201; fax 791-5348; MAYOR janders1@ci.tucson.az.us; Jerry Anderson; phone 791-4711; fax 791-5391; WARD 3 jibarra1@ci.tucson.az.us; Jose Ibarra; phone 791-4040; fax 791-5393; WARD 1 WARD5@azstarnet.com; Steve Leal; phone 791-4231; fax 791-3188; WARD 5 kdixon1@ci.tucson.az.us; Carol West; phone 791-4687; fax 791-5380; WARD 2 WARD4@azstarnet.com; Shirley Scott; phone 791-3199; fax 791-4717; WARD 4 WARD6@ci.tucson.az.us; Fred Ronstadt; phone 791-4601; fax 791-3211; WARD 6

I can't do much more than that for you. The rest is up to you. If you wish the TCC gun show to have their contract renewed with the city of Tucson so we can enjoy the largest of the gun shows in Tucson, let them know how you feel.

I respectfully request that you be POLITE and to the point.

If you have further questions, feel free to contact me at 740-9387 (voicemail so leave message) or email me at rineer@quixnet.net

Sincerely,

Ken Rineer

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretense by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both. — William Rawle, A View of the Constitution 125-6 (2nd ed. 1829)
