Friday’s wrap of the 2018 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show coincides with more gun control back at the state level, with at least two bump stock ban measures making headway at far ends of the country. There is much irony in this because prior to Oct. 1, 2017, very few people outside the shooting community had ever heard of bump stocks. Ask any of the hundreds of firearms media professionals here about the devices and they will unanimously say that they have been used in a grand total of one (1) mass shooting, just up the Strip from the Sands Expo Center.

The injection of Florida’s abominable “stand your ground” law into the Corey Jones case is a dismaying turn of events in the search for justice for the slain drummer. Now, instead of a trial in April in which disgraced police officer Nouman Raja will have to defend himself that he shot the fleeing 31-year-old “without lawful justification,” in the words of the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s probable cause affidavit, there will first be a hearing in which prosecutors will have to prove that Raja wasn’t acting in self-defense.

Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration reversed a regulatory change championed by former Gov. Chris Christie that made it easier for people to carry concealed handguns in New Jersey. Ten days into his term, Murphy, a Democrat, announced the reversal and pledged to “explore every legal option” to challenge the federal concealed carry reciprocity bill, which was approved by the House of Representatives and would force New Jersey and other states to honor concealed-carry permits issued outside of their borders– even if those states have lower standards or no standards for concealed-carry.

We make fun of Nancy Pelosi for good reason because of her nonsensical rants. But she was an effective speaker and minority leader when defending Obama as president. She attempted this largely by attacking Republicans. Ryan and McConnell have not retaliated.

For a gun show newbie such as this reporter, the first thing you notice is that there’s a lot more than just guns and ammo for sale. Antique duck decoys, beef jerky, even jewelry are available for purchase. There are also plenty of ears to bend with hunting stories if you don’t feel like shopping. The Code of the West gun show hit the Solano County Fairgrounds this weekend, and at $12 for an entrance fee and free parking, it was a good opportunity to peruse Glocks, rifles, knives, and all manner or stun and pepper spray contraptions.

Donald Trump believes that if the madman responsible for the Las Vegas massacre four months ago hadn’t purchased 55 guns in one year, he’d have purchased 55 bombs. Or so he told Piers Morgan in an interview airing Sunday. Morgan and the Daily Mail have been promoting the interview for several days via Twitter, revealing “shocking” tidbits such as these.

On Friday Gabby Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, endorsed Gavin Newsom as the “greatest leader” on gun control today. Newsom pushed Prop 63 through in 2016 to ban “high capacity” ammunition. On June 29, 2017, the ban was ruled unconstitutional and its implementation stopped by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez.

A 15-year-old student is accused of shooting and killing two classmates at a western Kentucky high school Tuesday and wounding more than a dozen others. On the same day, hours later, Republican Sen. Steve West filed a bill that would let districts appoint armed marshals to patrol public schools.

Gainesville mom's marched the streets today to raise awareness for safer gun laws. Tv20's Landon Harrar was at the march and shows us why these mothers feel the need to speak up loudly about gun violence. This is the fifth year "Mom's Demand Action" members have taken to the streets. Margaret Hamer marched today with her daughter and said" rather than protesting we're advocating, advocating for laws that make it less easy to commit gun violence is the easy way to say it."

Remington Outdoor Company Inc., which is one of the largest makers of firearms in the U.S., is working with Lazard Ltd, an investment bank, on options for restructuring its debt of $950 million, said people close to the matter on Friday. Remington, which is still privately held, has been facing doubts about the ability of refinancing its large debt load in 2018 amidst a period of sluggish sales. The firearms maker was abandoned by some investors after a Bushmaster rifle of it was used during the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in 2012 where 20 children and six adults were killed.

A bill in the Arizona Legislature would allow students to carry non-lethal weapons on campus. Current legislation permits some types of pepper spray on campus so long as they don’t contain oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient in most pepper sprays. HB 2172 seeks to change that by allowing students to carry any non-lethal weapons on campus in the name of self defense.

The 5 Best Revolvers (Ruger and Smith & Wesson Made the Cut)

The revolver was one of the first multi-shot handguns. The revolver concept was preceded by the so-called “pepperbox” handgun, which used multiple barrels to arm an individual with multiple ready-to-fire bullets. This was later refined to the revolver concept, which saved weight by using a single barrel served by a revolving, cylindrical magazine holding six or more bullets. Although semiautomatic pistols have overtaken revolvers on the U.S. market, there are several good revolver designs that command attention. Simpler, less prone to jamming and capable of firing more powerful ammunition than the semiautomatic, revolvers still have their place.

Permitless concealed carry is back, but unlikely to become law. Senate Bill 104 would allow people who can legally carry a concealed handgun in South Dakota to do so without a permit. It's scheduled to be debated Tuesday in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard vetoed a similar bill last year, saying that the state's permit process is simple and straightforward.

Denver residents flocked to the Tanner Gun Show on Sunday, checking out firearms, knives, ammunition, holsters and survival gear for sale — but vendors lamented lagging commerce that they blamed in part on a lack of urgency under President Donald Trump. The tilt toward tougher gun control under President Barack Obama, they said, had led to brisker business.

A state legislative committee that oversees emergency management heard an update Thursday on school safety measures. The committee's chair opened the meeting with a reflection on recent school shootings in other states. "If you regularly read the paper, or watch the TV or listen to the radio, or pick up a telephone, too many times we're seeing schools victimized across our nation," began Representative John Faircloth. Shootings at schools outside Dallas and in rural Kentucky made headlines last week.

Yet another citizen is facing criminal charges for not realizing that gun laws vary from state to state. Hayley Leach, a Colorado woman, was arrested when she attempted to check her gun in at Albany Airport for her return flight home, News 10 ABC reported. Leach has since been free released on bail but must return to New York in February. That means in addition to facing charges, she’ll need to endure the expenses of retaining a lawyer, traveling back from Colorado, and paying fines and court costs.

Lots of people claim to have a one-of-a-kind firearm, but this design truly is. Gun maker Jesse James has created one 1911 that is engraved and designed to commemorate President Donald Trump’s term in the White House. The 1911, which was modified to include a longer barrel so the inscription could fit, was on display at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas last week. James said he only made one of the guns, and he hasn’t decided whether to give it to Trump as a friend or to make a more formal presentation, which would mean the gun would later end up in the presidential museum.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
...If a man lies under oath or procures the lie of another under oath, if he perjures himself or suborns perjury, he is guilty under the statute law. Under the higher law, under the great law of morality and righteousness, he is precisely as guilty if, instead of lying in a court, he lies in a newspaper or on the stump; and in all probability, the evil effects of his conduct are infinitely more widespread and more pernicious. — Teddy Roosevelt - May 12, 1900
