"A jury awarded $900,000 in damages to the family after finding the Brevard County Sheriff's Office negligent in its handling of a road chase."

"The civil suit against the Sheriff's Office stems from the Feb. 3, 1999, decision by a deputy to call off the pursuit of an Orange County man speeding on a foggy stretch of State Road 520."

"The sheriff's deputies, however, continued to follow without emergency lights while the suspect drove without headlights, records show."

The alert says, in part: "Attacks on places of worship and schools, and the murders of private American citizens and other westerners, demonstrate that as security is increased at official U.S. facilities, terrorists and their sympathizers will seek softer targets. These may include facilities where Americans or possibly other foreigners are generally known to congregate or visit, such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events or resorts and beaches. Americans should increase their security awareness when they are at such locations, avoid them, or switch to other locations where Americans in large numbers generally do not congregate. There is a possibility that American citizens may be targeted for kidnapping or assassination."

-------
There is no good reason why law-abiding Americans should be disallowed their right to self-protection in a post-9/11 world.

"Modifying Dallas/Fort Worth Airport's terminals to make room for permanent baggage screening equipment will cost $145.6 million or $170.6 million..."

"The D/FW Airport Board unanimously signed a resolution to build areas for the SUV-size bomb detection machines and a system of conveyor belts that will allow federal screeners to inspect luggage. The undertaking would involve large-scale construction projects that would modify the terminal faces and possibly add more restaurant and retail space to two terminals, officials said." ...

"The Bush budget proposal doesn't contain any money for renovations needed to meet the government's new security requirements for terminals."

"It is just one weapon in a massive illegal arsenal that until now has slipped through the cracks. In raids up and down the state, the Department of Justice is seizing weapons from felons, mental patients, and people with restraining orders for domestic violence -- all of whom are banned from owning guns."

"How widespread is the problem? Attorney General Bill Lockyer now believes there are more than 170,000 people in California who are illegally armed and potentially dangerous."

"In a report late last year to the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the country still faced major security threats and stressed the importance of disarming all civilians."

-------
So what? Maybe that will allow them to better defend themselves against the criminal element while their government is in an admitted shambles.

Only a delusional editor, who truly believes that a "gun free" city will stop criminals from victimizing innocent, disarmed victims will doubtless tout this insane scheme.

"But the real issue, unchallenged by Mr. Dixon and his lawyer, Andrew Friedman, is that New York's gun laws were broken. There will be no plea bargain, however, Mr. Friedman said. This week, he asked a Criminal Court judge in Brooklyn to toss out the charges. A decision was put off until next month."

"Pleading guilty, Mr. Dixon says, would leave him, unfairly, with a criminal record that could damage his career. His lawyer adds that encouragement has come from many quarters, including judges in off-the-record remarks. The district attorney's office acknowledges having received hundreds of e-mail messages condemning it for pursuing a man who had defended his home and family."
