The bill had a hearing earlier this month in the House Public Safety Committee and was re-introduced Tuesday with no testimony. The bill passed on a 9-6 vote.

The Republican-led Michigan Senate has voted to repeal a law that makes it a misdemeanor if gun sellers don’t keep a registry of firearm purchases.

The provision is included in legislation approved 27-10 Thursday and send to the House. The bill would largely make what supporters say are technical changes to a law that eliminated gun boards for issuing concealed handgun licenses.

Democrats opposed the legislation, calling the elimination of criminal penalties for not keeping gun records “unpalatable.” The 1931 law requires gun businesses to keep a registry of each buyer’s name, age, occupation and residence along with information about firearms purchased.

Switchblade knives would be legal in Michigan under legislation approved unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, is the sponsor of SB 245. It would repeal the part of the Michigan Penal Code that outlaws knives that open with mechanical assistance, such as switch-blades.

Jones said that it's often said old black and white films featuring gangs and knives were the reason knives like switchblades were outlawed in the first place.

Tim Fitzgerald, a legislative Liaison for the Michigan State Police, said right now only about half of the state's local prosecutors are charging for switchblades. The current ban "is something that we have absolutely no problem with the repeal of,"

Two years after approving open carry and campus carry bills during the 2015 legislative session, Texas lawmakers are debating proposals that would give the state some of the laxest gun laws in the country. The House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety heard hours of public testimony Tuesday on two bills that would allow Texans to carry a handgun (open or concealed) without obtaining a gun license and completing the required safety training.
