"Today’s installment runs through two more documents provided to Gun Rights Examiner by a source close to the Shipley case, ATF ROIs that detail how the sale of the Barrett went down, introduce us to a mysterious stranger, and demonstrate that the transaction must have been authorized by ATF agents who had been closely monitoring things with FFL cooperation." ...

"CBS Morning News’ Friday edition on gun sales was a grand slam story focused primarily on a woman in Los Angeles, but it had a decidedly local connection with a quick interview featuring Bellevue-based gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb."

"The network took a look at rising gun sales, which have hit an all-time high cracking 10.2 million transactions, which is 20 percent ahead of last year, the story reported." ...

"Seattle Times reporter Sara Jean Green’s Friday morning piece about a young man named Deitrick Johnson may have helped crack the code on why there is an uptick in deadly violence this year, quite possibly without intent."

"In a telling remark about encountering 'another young black man he doesn’t know,' Johnson offered this revealing observation: 'There’s always tension between us.'"

"'I think,' Johnson said, 'we’ve been conditioned to feel we have to be tough when all we’re asking for is pride and respect.'"

"Johnson, described as a '20-something,' needs a couple of life lessons that invariably come hard." ...

"For most gun control advocates, the one thing they will absolutely never want to touch is the hunting abilities of the American population. Nevermind that’s not even the point of the second amendment, for some reason hunting is the 'third rail' of gun control. The problem for them is that hunting rifles are continuously evolving, and the next generation of hunters have already picked their weapons…" ...

"'When they come for my gun, they will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands,' is a common refrain I often hear from the Neo-Cons when there is a threat, credible or otherwise, that the US government is going to take their firearms. And, when I hear this crazy talk, I agree with them openly. 'You are right. They will pry your gun from your cold dead hands,' which I often follow with the question, 'And where will that leave you except face down in a pool of your own blood [in] the middle of the street, just another dead fool resisting the State?' Holy Statist Batman, who wrote this thing? That would be Jim Karger over at dailyreckoning.com. But wait! Jimbo’s warning against increasing police militarization . . ." ...

"It’s a pretty simple idea, really. Humans have a God-given right to self-defense. Despite what’s commonly called The Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution doesn’t confer this or any other right. The first ten Amendments protect our 'inalienable' rights from the government. Even if you don’t believe in God it’s a pretty compelling set-up; one that’s protected individual liberty for over three centuries. Not so says Norman Lear, the man who unleashed right wing straw man Archie Bunker into our cultural gestalt. His HuffPo screed Paul Ryan: God Says That I Can Carry a Gun? makes it clear that the founder of People for the American Way has a different view of the American way . . ." ...

"Recently I had the chance to participate in the Defensive Handgun 210 course at U.S. Shooting Academy in Tulsa, OK. I’d been to USSA once before and I’m always impressed with their facility and the attitudes of the staff and trainers – the place is top notch. The 2-day course was taught by Mike Seeklander and the description on their website was focused on just what I was looking for; practice and honing of fundamentals for an experienced shooter, not a course for beginners. "1. Fantasy Stage - During this stage the shooter has daydreams of the shooting. He fantasizes about the news coverage. He idolizes other shooters. He might draw pictures of the event and make Web postings. Would-be Active Shooters in the Fantasy Stage will often discuss their desires with friends and foes alike. If news of these fantasies are shared with you, believe them and pass them on to law enforcement. If police can intervene prior to the suspect acting on their fantasy there may never be a head line." ...

... "I am the first to admit I prefer the older classic sixguns, however I must also admit today’s guns are stronger, held to tighter tolerances, usually more accurate, and relatively speaking less expensive. We have seen this same progress in electronic sighting equipment. What used to be fairly large and bulky, prone to failure, and also quite expensive has now morphed into much smaller units which rarely give a problem while at the same time being much more affordable. The latest holographic sight offered by Browning is a perfect example of this being about 1/3 the size of the first holosight I ever experienced." ...

"Many of us will agree $500 is not a bad price in exchange for protecting ourselves and our families, particularly when compared to the cost of a carbine. But just as many will consider it too steep a price to pay for a tool that (hopefully) won’t see much use outside of the occasional trip to the range."

"Ever since last month's deadly shooting in an Aurora, Colo., cinema that left 12 people dead, we've been treated to the same tired arguments from both gun-control advocates and gun-rights proponents that seem to crop up in the wake of every gun-related bloodbath. To wit: If we had stronger gun laws, such killings would happen less often. Countered by: If gun laws and theater rules were looser, theater patrons would have been packing heat and could have shot down accused killer [redacted] before the body count mounted." ...

"After the tragedy in Aurora, Colo., I waited to comment in the hope that a thoughtful and serious national dialogue about the epidemic of gun violence in the United States would break out. Instead, what followed was a combination of the usual loony rhetoric from pro-gun extremists, the sound of silence from everyone else, and then another gun-enabled massacre outside Milwaukee."

"There is so much that is right about this country, but the unwillingness to address mass murders by people with easy access to guns is a tragic flaw in American society. "If the National Rifle Association (NRA) is the most powerful interest group in Washington, then why did its poster boy in Congress, Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), lose a Republican primary this week? According to an analysis of NRA power by The American Prospect contributing editor (and former Media Matters staffer) Paul Waldman, the result should not come as a surprise. Waldman studied congressional races in the four most recent election cycles and concluded that, despite the NRA's tenancy to puff itself up, both the organization's endorsement and campaign contributions offer no real benefit to congressional candidates." ...
