(Opinion Letter: Debby Taylor--Rio Vista, CA)
"I work with people---either in their golden years or disabled--"

"---we listen to the hopelessness in their voices when their windows are shattered and their radios and other personal treasures are stolen.
They have to deal with domestic terror. I see it in their stricken eyes when they walk back to their cars, hoping that they are not---the next victim."

"Isn't there something that can be done by our community and law enforcement---?"

"Support for the First Amendment has eroded significantly since Sept. 11 and nearly half of Americans now think the constitutional amendment on free speech goes too far in the rights it guarantees, according to a poll released yesterday."

"The sentiment that the First Amendment goes too far was on the rise even before the terrorist attacks, doubling to four in 10 between 2000 and 2001. The poll found that 49 percent think the First Amendment goes too far, about 10 points higher than in 2001."

"As I listened to the news reporting that United Airlines had announced that it was likely to be filing for bankruptcy this fall, I could not help but smirk a little and wonder if there is justice in the world after all. You see, this spring I was boarding a United Airlines flight and an attendant decided to search my carry-on bag. Tucked in the bottom of the bag was a tiny penknife with a blade about two-inches long. My parents gave it to me and I had forgotten it was there."

"The security man (in his best English) told me he would have to confiscate my knife as it violated new security regulations that forbid any cutting device — including nail clippers — aboard commercial planes. I asked if it was possible to simply put the knife in an envelope and put it in the baggage compartment, so I could get it when I landed. You can carry knives and firearms this way. He replied, 'No.' I asked if I could pay to have it mailed to me. He said 'No' again. So, I got on board and left my knife in Kansas City."

"This is especially hard when we have a shooting death like the one two days ago in Brooklyn, where a man was killed by police officers who say that they thought a fake gun he possessed was the real thing."

"Some witnesses say different. They say that when the man, who had been in a trivial argument, turned around and raised his shirt to show that he had no gun, the cops opened up and brought his life to an end. Out of seven shots, he was hit three times."

"A former television helicopter reporter has been sentenced to two months in prison and four months house arrest for possession of illegally altered firearms."

"U.S. District Judge Lourdes Baird said Thursday she was convinced that Bob Pettee's crime was an aberration in an otherwise law-abiding life and a lenient sentence was appropriate."

KABA NOTE: The National Firearms Act of 1934 is as unconstitutional as every other gun law and should be repealed. However, it's peculiar to see a California judge treating a former media reporter so leniently -- when chances are good a "regular citizen" would have done some hard time.

Here's another report that describes how useless a "restraining order" or a "protection order" is against a determined killer.

Sadly, its writer lacks the knowledge or will to discuss the most effective, most affordable, easiest to use and easiest to conceal form of self-defense ever devised: the handgun. The only time she mentions a gun is when someone was criminally misusing it.

Do be sure the read the "suggestions for helping people in abusive relationships" -- that's the section where "loan them a handgun until they can get their own, and teach them how to use it effectively."

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MARYLAND -- "A man who police say killed two deputies as they tried to take him away for emergency psychiatric care remained at large Friday and was believed to be armed."

"James Logan, 23, hid in a bedroom of his parents' house Thursday, then shot the sheriff's deputies with a handgun when they confronted him, said Capt. Andrew Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department."

" 'They were caught completely by surprise. It appears it was a very quick and violent event,' Ellis said."

According to this report, the police were coming to get Mr. Logan because his wife said he was "behaving erratically."

SUGGESTION:

Before you can fully understand the nature of life under the police jackboot in this troubled Maryland community, consider investing some time reading the in-depth studies put out by the Washington Post last year (link below). When it comes to brutal police officers, Prince George's County, Maryland is known nationally as one of the most problematic areas of the country -- a place where police officers have pushed way beyond some people's limits.

For much more information -- in exhaustive and infuriating detail -- go to: A Blue Wall of Silence: Police Brutality, Even Murder, in Prince George's County

In a community where people consider the police murderers -- with evidence to back up that belief -- it's not unreasonable to expect them to resist arrest, even with force.
